Why it stands out
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 stands out as a compact SUV that blends family-friendly practicality with a more engaging driving character than many rivals. Mazda kept the good in the CX-5 for 2021 and added a new version to the lineup, while also enhancing the model’s tech and discontinuing the unpopular diesel engine in the United States. That combination helps explain why it remains a competitive choice for buyers who want an SUV that feels a little more upscale and a little more fun to drive than the norm.
Its strengths are straightforward: it offers excellent value for money, earns great safety ratings, and is praised for being fun to drive. Owners also tend to appreciate its luxurious feel, sporty performance, comfortable interior, and wealth of standard features. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though, since the CX-5 is also described as having poor ride quality and unintuitive technology, and some drivers have raised concerns about road noise and the infotainment system.

Purchased new, would not purchase again. Has been reliable BUT the webbing inside the rotors are all rusted and I was told to replace the rotors. Not do a brake job. Replace the rotors. At an estimated cost of $1400 while this car is under warranty and has 23,000 miles on it. Also, I have had 4 instances when the fob is inside the car on the center console and the doors lock with no warning. The vehicle does get exceptional highway mileage - 27mpg fully loaded with 4 passengers and luggage up top. The stereo system is nice - not as good as my 2010 Mazda 3 si was, but a stereo does not make a car go or stop. This was my 3rd Mazda and I have decided it is my last Mazda.

The CX-5 packs a ton of value and performance. It is a compact SUV tailored to those who enjoy driving and it rewards the driver with athletic responses and peppy acceleration. The interior rivals luxury brands like Audi but with reliability and at a much lower price point.

How much does the 2021 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,818 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,755 |
| Year-Round High | $22,218 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,205 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.74% |
Prices have softened 1.74% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,329 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 4.79/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the CX-5 for its luxurious feel, sporty performance, comfortable interior, and wealth of standard features. The turbo engine’s power is a recurring highlight, and the model’s upscale character comes through clearly in owner feedback.
The trade-offs are that some drivers call out road noise and an outdated infotainment system, while the expert review also flags poor ride quality and unintuitive technology. If you want a compact SUV that feels more premium and engaging than most rivals, the CX-5 fits that brief well.
With 38.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers repeatedly highlighting the CX-5 as a vehicle they can count on over time.
The expert review reinforces that impression by describing Mazda’s powertrains as solid choices and noting that the model’s overall package remains competitive year after year. Mazda also includes a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and lived an easy life.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?
At 74.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, tire wear, and whether the cabin electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport comes with automatic on/off LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, a rear roof spoiler, and rain-sensing windshield wipers, while Touring adds leatherette seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, two rear USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, and auto-leveling LED headlights. Higher trims add more premium touches, but the biggest feature gaps are at the base level.
- Powertrain: You get a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, or a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on regular fuel. Front-wheel drive is standard on lower trims, while all-wheel drive is standard on the turbo-powered Grand Touring Reserve and Signature.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
- Infotainment: Every CX-5 gets a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system is not especially intuitive, and the interface is controlled largely through the center-console knob rather than by simple touch-first operation.
- Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo engine with front-wheel drive returns 25 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, that drops to 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. The turbo engine with front-wheel drive is rated at 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined, while turbo all-wheel-drive models return 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 6 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Touring Preferred SV Package, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard 2.5-liter engine, the 10.25-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a strong safety feature set. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it leaves out several comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leatherette seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, rear USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, and auto-leveling LED headlights. It’s the trim that most clearly balances price and everyday livability.
- Touring Preferred SV Package: This package is the smart move if you want a more premium feel without jumping to a much pricier trim. It adds a 10-speaker Bose sound system, leather seats, a power liftgate, a power moonroof, and power-adjustable front seats.
- Carbon Edition: This is the style-focused choice, pairing Touring Preferred SV Package equipment with Polymetal Gray paint, gloss black mirrors, black wheels, and red leather interior accents. It’s for you if appearance matters as much as equipment.
- Grand Touring: This trim adds more upscale lighting, a digital gauge display, paddle shifters, SiriusXM, and other premium touches. It’s a good fit if you want a more polished cabin without going all the way to the top.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is the comfort-oriented upgrade, adding ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, automatic folding mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer. It suits you if you drive in colder weather or want a more luxury-like experience.
- Signature: This is the most premium version, with Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, ambient lighting, and a more upscale cabin presentation. Choose it if you want the richest CX-5 experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but buyers who want the best headlights available should plan to upgrade to the adaptive lighting system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,329 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,755, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $21,818 sits slightly below last year's $22,205.
That modest decline suggests the CX-5 has softened a bit, but not dramatically. For a future seller, that means you should expect a market that still values the model well, especially if your vehicle is clean, well maintained, and equipped with desirable features.
The current pricing range also shows that buyers are still willing to pay for the CX-5’s upscale feel and strong safety reputation. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance records organized, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
The main caveat is that the best headlights are tied to an upgrade, so you should check the exact equipment on any used listing you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda added a new Carbon Edition and improved the tech while dropping the diesel engine.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $19,887, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $21,818 average.
- It offers a more premium feel than many shoppers expect.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $23,486, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,818 average.
- It pushes the CX-5 further toward premium territory with an updated, upgraded feel.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and market availability, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer premium-leaning updates and are willing to pay more.
