overall

Summary
With 324 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,371.00, 34.9% of 2021 MINI Coopers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 MINI Cooper 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5 / 10.
80.9% of 2021 MINI Cooper models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 MINI Cooper stands out by leaning hard into personality. It brings driving fun and quirky design in a nostalgia-driven package, and its funky little-car attitude is a big part of the appeal. For buyers who want something that feels distinctive rather than conventional, the MINI Cooper’s classic fun-loving character and unique styling are central to what makes it memorable.
It is also notable for its variety. The MINI Cooper is available as a two-door hardtop, a four-door hardtop, and a convertible, and the 2021 model year includes several new features along with the re-addition of a manual transmission option. The car’s strengths include being fun to drive, offering multiple powertrain options, and giving shoppers the choice of a manual transmission. Owners also praise its sporty performance and modern technology, and many appreciate the practicality of the four-door design and the comfortable, well-equipped interior.
That said, the MINI Cooper is not the most practical or best equipped car in its class, and its drawbacks include poor value for money, poor ergonomic design, and a cramped back seat. Even so, those compromises are part of the package for buyers drawn to a small car with a big attitude and a design that refuses to blend in.

Is the 2021 MINI Cooper a good car?
Yes — the 2021 MINI Cooper earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 5/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Performance at 7/10.
Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, sporty performance, and modern technology. They also like the practical four-door layout and the comfortable, well-equipped interior.
The trade-offs are familiar: it can feel minimalist on features, and the cabin is not especially spacious.
If you want a small car with personality, engaging road manners, and a distinctive design, this model year fits that brief well. With 40.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 MINI Cooper reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that feels fun, sporty, and modern while still being comfortable enough for everyday use. The same feedback also suggests you can count on it for an enjoyable ownership experience if you value character and driving feel.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the MINI feels spritely and energetic, which supports the sense that it delivers a consistent, confidence-inspiring driving experience. MINI’s warranty coverage includes a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty and a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the car’s charm comes with compromises in space, ergonomics, and value.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 MINI Cooper?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are not the same as problem-free listings. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you care about interior condition, feature content, and how well the car has been maintained. Focus on whether the car’s equipment matches your expectations, since MINI’s feature strategy can vary a lot by trim and option package.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin uses a distinctive design language with rounded shapes, circular vents, and a circular infotainment display, but the back seat is very tight and best suited to limited use. Base cars can feel sparse on features, so check whether the equipment level matches your needs.
- Powertrain: You can choose from a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 134 horsepower, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 189 hp, a 228-hp turbo-four, or a 301-hp turbo-four. Front-wheel drive is standard, and a six-speed manual is standard on the Cooper and Cooper S.
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors. Front parking sensors, parking assistance, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning are optional.
- Infotainment: The base screen is 6.5 inches, while an available 8.8-inch screen adds SiriusXM satellite radio and Apple CarPlay. MINI does not include Android Auto at any trim level.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient configuration is the Convertible at 28/37/31 mpg city/highway/combined, while the Cooper S Convertible returns 23/32/26 mpg.
Which 2021 MINI Cooper trim should I buy?
The 2021 MINI Cooper is offered in 4 trim levels: Cooper, Cooper S, John Cooper Works, John Cooper Works GP.
Here's the short version:
- Cooper: This is the entry point, and it uses the turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with 134 horsepower. It suits you best if you want the MINI experience at the lowest starting point, but it is also the trim most likely to feel light on features.
- Cooper S: This trim steps up to the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 189 hp and a six-speed manual. It is the best-value choice if you want the strongest balance of everyday performance and price.
- John Cooper Works: This version brings a 228-hp turbo-four and a more serious performance focus. Choose it if you want the MINI formula with noticeably stronger acceleration.
- John Cooper Works GP: This is the most powerful version, with a 301-hp turbo-four and an eight-speed automatic. It is the right pick if outright speed matters most.
The standard safety package includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors, while other driver-assistance features remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 MINI Cooper?
It looks like a buyer’s market, with meaningful inventory and a healthy share of discounted listings.
- Deal availability: 40.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 321 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.63% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,631.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $20,492 sits slightly below last year's $22,183.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car is equipped.
Because the MINI Cooper has a distinctive identity and strong enthusiast appeal, well-kept examples should continue to attract attention. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 MINI Cooper safe?
The 2021 MINI Cooper missed out on a Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It also has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance features are forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors. Other safety features, including front parking sensors, parking assistance, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning, are optional.
The safety picture is mixed because the car earned top Good crash-test ratings, but its headlights and LATCH ease-of-use results were weaker.
Should I buy a 2021 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 40.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds several new features and brings back a manual transmission option.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $18,811, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $20,492 average.
- It blends classic MINI design with a lively feel and multiple powertrain choices.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $23,603, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $20,492 average.
- It leans harder into personalization and BMW-backed engineering.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price trend, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the value-minded alternative; if you want more of the same formula with a broader customization focus, the 2022 is the step-up path.
