The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a compact luxury crossover with optional seven-person seating, putting it in a small category alongside the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class. It got an extensive refresh for the 2020 model year, so the 2021 model carries over with no major updates.

You can pick from two powertrain choices in your Discovery Sport. The base P250 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine worth 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. If that’s not enough for you, you can choose the P290, which combines the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 with a 48-volt electrical system, making the Discovery Sport a mild hybrid, and producing 286 hp and 295 lb-ft.

Whichever you choose, you’ll see 19 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. Both engines mate to a nine-speed automatic transmission and come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). One thing that sets the Discovery Sport apart is its Terrain Response 2 system, featuring several different drive modes for specific types of terrain.

Land Rover sells the Discovery Sport in Base, S, SE, and HSE trims. Standard features across the range include 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, power front seats, heated and power-folding mirrors, rear fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and keyless start. Premium and vegan upholstery, massage functionality, heated and cooled seats, a Bose surround-sound system, improved handling, larger wheels, seven-person seating, and various appearance packages are optional.

Every Discovery Sport comes packed with plenty of safety content: rear- and surround-view cameras, traffic sign recognition, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver awareness monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and an adaptive speed limiter. Blind-spot monitoring, clear-exit monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert are bundled with the Driver Assist Pack. Oddly, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has evaluated the Discovery Sport for crashworthiness.
