Used 2021 Land Rover Defender for Sale nearSaint Paul, MN

How much does the 2021 Land Rover Defender cost?

Prices have softened 14.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 710 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of choice if you're comparing trims and conditions.

Is the 2021 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2021 Land Rover Defender earns an 8/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

It blends serious off-road ability with modern design, technology, luxury, and comfort, so you get a more polished feel than many trail-focused SUVs. It is especially appealing if you want a capable adventure vehicle that still works well for everyday use.

The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and poor handling, plus interior materials that feel cheap. That means you should value capability and character more than refinement behind the wheel.

With 38.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The 2021 Land Rover Defender is presented as a thoroughly modern SUV with extensive durability testing behind it, including hundreds of thousands of miles in harsh climates and conditions. Its standard four-wheel-drive hardware, low-range capability, and robust recovery points reinforce that it was engineered for hard use.

The performance setup also points to long-term toughness: you get an eight-speed automatic, full-time 4WD, Terrain Response, and available locking differentials, all of which are built around durability as much as capability. On the ownership side, the cost-effectiveness notes suggest that proper maintenance matters, and that a well-kept Defender may hold up better than a neglected one.

If you buy used, the biggest long-term risk is paying premium-SUV money for a vehicle that may have been driven hard off-road or maintained inconsistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Land Rover Defender?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a capable SUV like this may have seen trail use, towing, or heavy-duty driving. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on wear from off-road use, signs of poor maintenance, and whether the cabin and exterior still match the asking price. Pay close attention to condition, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been cared for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin emphasizes exposed structure, beefy controls, a crisp digital instrument panel, and a secure center touchscreen, while the standard interior and exterior design are meant to feel authentic and thoughtfully executed. The base setup already brings a lot of character, so higher trims mainly matter if you want more equipment and a more upscale feel.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, or a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six mild-hybrid with 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Both use an eight-speed automatic and full-time 4WD with low range and Terrain Response, and the optional Terrain Response 2 adds automatic and advanced settings.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes blind spot assist, lane-keep assist, driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, rear traffic monitor, clear exit monitor, a 360-degree parking aid, emergency braking, and more. The suite is broad, but the safety content does not identify trim-specific gaps.
• Infotainment: You get a 10-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, standard Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and WiFi connectivity. Remote software updates are supported, and multiple camera views, including a transparent hood view, add real-world usefulness.
• Fuel efficiency: The Defender is described as having poor fuel economy.

Which 2021 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2021 Land Rover Defender is offered in 11 trim levels: base, Defender 90 S, Defender 90 X-Dynamic S, First Edition, X, Defender 110 S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE, and X.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Defender experience at the lowest starting price. It gives you the core off-road hardware and the distinctive design, but it is the trim where you should expect the fewest extras.
• Defender 90 S: This is a sensible step up if you want a little more equipment without jumping too far in price. It keeps the short-wheelbase character while adding more content than the base model.
• Defender 90 X-Dynamic S: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a richer feel in the 90 lineup. It sits above the 90 S and is a stronger fit if style matters as much as capability.
• First Edition: This is the special early-run choice for shoppers who want a more exclusive version of the Defender. It makes sense if you value uniqueness and are willing to pay for it.
• X: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most expensive, most fully equipped Defender. It is the trim to consider if you want maximum content and are comfortable with the highest price.
• Defender 110 S: This is the practical starting point in the long-wheelbase lineup. It is a good fit if you want the Defender’s capability with more everyday usability.
• SE: This is the best-value trim to focus on if you want a strong balance of equipment and price. It is also the trim used for the test vehicle, which suggests it lands in the sweet spot for many shoppers.
• X-Dynamic SE: Pick this if you want more presence and equipment than the SE without going all the way to the top. It is a good middle-ground choice for buyers who want a more upscale feel.
• X-Dynamic HSE: This is for shoppers who want a more premium long-wheelbase Defender with more content and a higher-end position in the lineup.
• X: This is the most expensive Defender 110 and the one to choose if you want the fullest equipment list and are willing to pay for it.

The safety content does not identify trim-level safety gaps, but it does show that the Defender already comes with a broad standard safety suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Land Rover Defender?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.

• Deal availability: 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 710 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 87.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $39,884, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $39,887 sits slightly below last year's $46,627.

That drop suggests the market has moved in buyers' favor, which can help you get into a Defender at a more reasonable entry point. For a future seller, though, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Because this model sits in a premium niche, a clean history and strong equipment can help protect value better than a rough example. If you buy carefully now, you give yourself a better chance of recovering more later.

Is the 2021 Land Rover Defender safe?

The 2021 Land Rover Defender does not have released crash-test ratings from NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety list is extensive, including a perimeter alarm, front airbags with a passenger seat occupant monitor, tire pressure monitoring, rear ISOFIX child-seat anchors, electronic traction control, dynamic stability control, roll stability control, emergency braking, anti-lock braking, emergency brake assist, cruise control speed limiter, blind spot assist, lane-keep assist, driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, rear traffic monitor, clear exit monitor, and a 360-degree parking aid.

That broad suite is a strength, but you should still remember that the lack of published crash-test results leaves more uncertainty than you’d have with a fully rated rival.

Should I buy a 2021 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.46% compared with last year.
• It delivers a polished, modern take on the Defender with strong off-road ability and everyday usability.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $36,608, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $39,887 average.
• It emphasizes rugged capability and everyday practicality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,892, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $39,887 average.
• It adds a larger touchscreen, wireless charging, and a V8 option.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the modern Defender formula at a softer price than newer models. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 is the value play; if you want newer tech and more power, the 2022 is the upgrade path.
