CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Jeep Wrangler
overall

Summary
With 8,620 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,353.00, 33.9% of 2021 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
82.5% of 2021 Wrangler models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends its long-running, instantly recognizable identity with powertrains that reflect changing buyer demands. It remains an icon with roots in the original Willys Jeep, and it still appeals by being rugged and different from the car-based SUVs that dominate the market. At the same time, Jeep keeps updating it to stay relevant, and the 2021 model offers both a plug-in hybrid option and a Hemi V8 in the four-door Wrangler Unlimited.
That mix of tradition and variety is a big part of the Wrangler’s appeal. Buyers get excellent off-road capability and a stylish design, along with multiple powertrain options that broaden its personality. The tradeoff is that it still has the drawbacks expected of a vehicle built around off-road toughness: poor ride quality, poor handling, and a lack of curtain airbags. Owners also tend to praise its adventurous character and off-road strength, though some note limited cargo space and a few interior quirks.

Was really in the market for a Sahara as we do very little of road. Found a loaded Rubicon that checked all the boxes so we went with it. Although the suspension is a little stiffer then the Sahara it was not too bad. Love the one touch roof and removable rear windows.

I’m moving from a 2004 TJ rubicon to a 2021 JL rubicon unlimited lots of improvements on the new jeep, the TJ is more hard core off-road. No other models compare to a jeep

I love the Rubicon lift as well as the red accents and my Sirius Guardian! Yes, $30k less than brand new! Nothing, it's my dream car! I would compare it to my previous Sahara!

How much does the 2021 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,242 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,256.18 |
| Year-Round High | $31,908.49 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,910 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.49% |
Prices have softened 11.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 8,884 listings available, which gives you a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $28,256.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its off-road capability, power, and adventurous character, and they also like the comfort it delivers for a vehicle built around ruggedness. The Wrangler’s identity and multiple powertrain choices are a big part of its appeal, especially if you want something that feels different from a typical car-based SUV.
The trade-offs are real: poor ride quality and poor handling are part of the package, and some owners mention limited cargo space and interior quirks. If you want a vehicle that prioritizes personality and trail ability over everyday polish, the Wrangler fits that use case well.
Only 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers repeatedly describe it as dependable in the sense that it delivers the rugged, adventurous experience they expect, with off-road capability and power that hold up to the Wrangler’s mission. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that Jeep keeps updating the model while preserving its core identity, which supports the idea that it remains a vehicle you can count on for its intended purpose.
The Wrangler’s durability story is strongest when you buy one that has been maintained carefully and used within its design limits. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that neglected examples can carry more wear from hard use than a typical SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any Wrangler you’re considering, because off-road use and modifications can matter as much as mileage. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on wear from trail use, signs of water intrusion, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim you’re paying for. Pay close attention to condition, because the Wrangler’s rugged image can hide a wide range of real-world use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport is the bare-bones starting point with manual door locks, manual side mirrors, black plastic fenders and bumpers, cloth seats, and a basic 5-inch audio display. The Sport S adds power windows and locks, power heated side mirrors, air conditioning, and remote keyless entry, while the Sahara brings a more street-oriented setup with dual-zone climate control, upgraded upholstery, side-steps, larger brakes, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The Rubicon is the most trail-focused, with beefed-up suspension and running gear, two-piece fender flares, and off-road hardware that suits serious use.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. Other options include a mild-hybrid version of that V6, a 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6, a plug-in hybrid 4xe, and a 6.4-liter V8 in the Rubicon 392.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring are available, but they are optional. There is no available lane-departure warning feature, and the base configuration is especially sparse.
- Infotainment: The Sport uses a basic 5-inch screen, while the 7-inch Uconnect system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is optional on the Sport S and standard on other trims. You can also get an 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, and Jeep pairs the larger displays with intuitive steering-wheel radio controls.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4xe returns 40 MPGe and 20 mpg combined once the battery is depleted. The EcoDiesel returns 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The gas turbo four-cylinder returns 21 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. The automatic V6 returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the manual V6 returns 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. The Rubicon 392 returns 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the most affordable way into the Wrangler, but it is very stripped down, with manual locks and mirrors, cloth seats, and a basic 5-inch display. Buy it only if you want the lowest entry price and plan to keep expectations simple.
- Sport S: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the everyday conveniences you’ll notice most, including power windows and locks, air conditioning, and remote keyless entry. It also opens the door to useful options like the Technology Group and Cold Weather Package.
- Sahara: This is the better pick if you want a more polished, street-friendly Wrangler with dual-zone climate control, upgraded upholstery, side-steps, larger brakes, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen. It suits you if you want comfort without giving up the Wrangler’s core personality.
- Rubicon: This is the trim to choose if off-road capability is your priority, thanks to its beefed-up suspension and running gear, locking differentials, and disconnecting front sway bar. It is the right fit if you want the most trail-ready factory setup.
The safety package remains limited overall, and several driver-assistance features are still optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,884 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,256.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $28,242 sits slightly below last year's $31,910.
That price movement suggests the Wrangler has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a clean, well-kept example, you may have a better chance of limiting your own loss when it’s time to sell. Strong demand for the Wrangler’s identity and capability should continue to support buyer interest.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Wrangler’s safety equipment is limited in the base setup, and several modern driver-assistance features remain optional rather than standard. Available features include forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with dynamic guidelines. There is no available lane-departure warning feature, and the lack of curtain airbags is a notable drawback.
That means you should pay close attention to the exact equipment on any used example you’re considering. If safety tech matters to you, prioritize a trim or package that includes the available driver-assistance features rather than assuming they come standard.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid option and a Hemi V8 to broaden the Wrangler’s appeal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $25,690, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $28,242 average.
- It adds a new diesel engine and broadens the Wrangler’s mechanical appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,541, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,242 average.
- It keeps the Wrangler’s distinctive formula while reinforcing its character and capability.
The bottom line: If you want the broadest mix of powertrains and the strongest current-market value, the 2021 is the best place to start. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for the newer model year.
