CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 6,609 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,893.00, 33.2% of 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
74.1% of 2021 Grand Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out as the final version of the current-generation model before a redesigned version arrives for the 2022 model year. It is also distinct from the three-row Grand Cherokee L, since this 2021 Grand Cherokee remains a two-row SUV. That makes it an appealing choice for buyers who want the familiar Grand Cherokee formula rather than the newer, larger interpretation of the name.
Even at the end of its run, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee still has several strengths that help it remain attractive. Its stylish design, premium interior materials, and great handling give it a more polished feel than many buyers expect from a midsize SUV. Owners also praise its spacious interior, smooth ride, impressive power, off-road capability, advanced technology features, and luxury feel. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the base engine is described as underwhelming, advanced safety features are not standard, and some owners note disappointing gas mileage and a lack of certain tech features for the price.

I'm a little biased because I've always driven Grand Cherokees. But I've always done that for a reason. Good quality, good features, great 4x4 capabilities and great handling.

This vehicle is exactly what I expected from the Jeep brand . It has some great features, including panoramic sunroof. It would have been nice to have a CD player or a hard drive that holds CD recordings.

| Year-Round High | $25,633.75 |

Is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 4.62/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the spacious interior, smooth ride, impressive power, off-road capability, advanced technology features, and luxury feel. The main trade-offs are the lack of certain tech features for the price and disappointing gas mileage.
That lines up with the Grand Cherokee’s use case as a two-row SUV that blends familiar utility with a more premium feel than many rivals. With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle people feel they can count on, with repeated mentions of a smooth ride, impressive power, and a generally good value proposition. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability and everyday usability by describing it as a capable all-arounder with strong road manners and serious off-road hardware.
Jeep Wave Customer Care includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years and 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is making sure prior use and maintenance history are clean, especially given the model’s age and mixed safety record.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 74% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with a premium trim. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and evidence of prior bodywork, because the market includes enough inventory to be selective.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from affordable Laredo and Limited versions to upscale Overland and Summit models, with Trailhawk for serious off-roading and SRT and Trackhawk for performance. Base versions miss some of the premium look and feel that higher trims deliver.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 5.7-liter V8 makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. The V8 adds stronger towing and more urgency, but fuel economy suffers.
- Safety package: Jeep offers the ProTech II Package with adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Advanced safety features are not standard.
- Infotainment: The Uconnect 4C with Nav system includes navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and Jeep Skill for Amazon Alexa. It is a strong setup for this generation, even if the vehicle feels tech-light overall.
- Fuel efficiency: The V8 is expected to return no more than 17 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 18.2 mpg on a mixed route. Fuel economy is a real ownership consideration if you drive a lot.
Which 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 8 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, Trailhawk, SRT, Trackhawk, and 80th Anniversary Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: Laredo is the value entry point, but it lacks the richer materials and upscale presence that define the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: Limited is the best balance for many shoppers because it sits in the affordable part of the lineup while still benefiting from the Grand Cherokee’s core strengths.
- Premium/top trim: Summit is the most compelling luxury choice, with premium leather, genuine wood, real aluminum, and a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Off-road trim: Trailhawk is the one to choose if you want the most focused trail capability in a daily-drivable package.
The safety package is not standard across the lineup, so check carefully for the ProTech II Package or equivalent equipment on any used example you consider.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,660 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.87% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,852.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $22,847 sits slightly below last year's $25,632.
That price decline suggests the model has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost can soften the impact of later resale losses, especially if you choose a well-kept example with desirable equipment.
Demand should remain supported by the Grand Cherokee’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a two-row SUV with premium and off-road credentials. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA with 4WD, while 2WD versions drop to four-star overall because of a three-star rollover resistance rating. In IIHS testing, it earns Marginal protection for the driver and Poor protection for the front passenger in small-overlap frontal crash testing, and the headlights also rate Poor unless you upgrade to the high-intensity discharge setup with automatic high-beam assist.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep offers the ProTech II Package with adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. That is a strong feature list, but it is not standard on every trim.
The main safety caveat is the weak IIHS performance, which is serious enough to outweigh the otherwise useful driver-assistance equipment for many shoppers.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.87% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It is the final version of the two-row Grand Cherokee before the redesign arrives.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,744, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $22,847 average.
- It is a long-running, appealing SUV with strong style and off-road capability.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $27,730, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $22,847 average.
- It brings a redesigned body and a major step up in technology and sophistication.
The bottom line: If you want the familiar two-row Grand Cherokee formula and a softer used price, the 2021 is the right target. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want the newest tech and redesign, move up to the 2022.
