CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Jeep Compass

Summary
With 4,010 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,215, 33.1% of 2021 Jeep Compass listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Compass 4.75 / 5 stars.
77.9% of 2021 Jeep Compass listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Compass stands out as a compact SUV that blends Jeep styling with genuine off-road capability in a way many rivals do not. It sits in the second generation, which brought a new chassis and a more refined, more modern cabin than the original Compass, along with more cargo space and improved tech and interior quality. For buyers who want a small SUV that still feels like a Jeep, that combination is the Compass’s main appeal.
For 2021, the Compass also benefits from a stronger safety and convenience story than earlier versions. Limited and Trailhawk trims came standard with the driver-assistance features that had previously been optional, including rain-sensing wipers, and the six-speed manual was discontinued. The Trailhawk remains the most distinctive version thanks to its low-range gearing, off-road suspension, skid plates, tow hooks, and all-terrain tires, while the rest of the lineup offers a more mainstream compact-SUV experience with available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch touchscreen on Sport and Latitude trims, and a 32 mpg highway rating on FWD models or 31 mpg on AWD models.
That said, the 2021 Compass is not without compromises. The 2.4-liter inline-four is described as noisy, harsh, and slow, and the nine-speed automatic has a poor reputation for rough, slow shifts and reliability issues. Interior space is also tighter in some areas than in the first-generation model, so the Compass’s strengths are more about character, capability, and equipment than outright refinement or performance.

Great car. Kinda like a baby Grand Cherokee, which I love. I love the look of the Grand Cherokee, but prefer having a smaller car, so this is perfect.

I had a 2016 Jeep Compass and after test driving the 2021 Trail Hawk edition I had to have one! Jeep has made some major improvements. First of all it rides much better. I can’t say it doesn’t ride like a Jeep but it’s improved suspension makes the ride nicer. Second thing I noticed is the noise level. With the new models it rides much quieter than the older models. I like the more streamlined look too; it doesn’t look as bulky around the rear tires. All the technology they packed into it is just the icing on the cake! I can’t really compare it to other vehicles outside the Jeep brand because I’ve owned Jeep’s since 1998 but this is probably my second favorite Jeep I’ve owned. My number one favorite was my first one so I’m sure that’s simply nostalgia talking!

This car has wonderful features! This car has outstanding value for someone! This car is missing push-to-start and remote start. I compare this to a Chevrolet Traverse.

How much does the 2021 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,211 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,211 |
| Year-Round High | $18,422 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,424 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.01% |
Prices have softened 12.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,992 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Jeep Compass a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. The 2021 Compass stands out as a compact SUV that blends Jeep styling with genuine off-road capability, while also offering a more refined cabin, more cargo space, and improved tech and interior quality than the original Compass. For you, that means it makes the most sense if you want a small SUV with character, capability, and available convenience features rather than the most polished mainstream crossover experience. 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2021 Compass benefits from a stronger safety and convenience story than earlier versions, and the second-generation redesign brought a more modern cabin and improved interior quality. At the same time, the 2.4-liter engine is described as noisy, harsh, and slow, and the nine-speed automatic has a poor reputation for rough, slow shifts and reliability issues. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is tied less to the cabin or feature set and more to drivetrain behavior and maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Compass?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus your inspection on drivetrain behavior, especially how the transmission shifts and whether the engine feels unusually rough or sluggish. It also makes sense to check interior condition and feature operation carefully, since the Compass’s appeal depends heavily on equipment and cabin quality. If possible, test the vehicle on both city streets and rougher pavement so you can judge ride quality, noise, and overall condition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Compass?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,992 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.01% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,211, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $16,211 sits slightly below last year's $18,424.
That price decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may face some pressure if prices continue to soften. If you buy at the right number and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later. Listings that are accident-free and well maintained should be easier to move when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,023, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $16,211 average.
- It emphasizes off-road ability for buyers who want trail-focused utility.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,595, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $16,211 average.
- It adds a more upscale cabin and stronger technology.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around choice if you want the strongest mix of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want a more upscale feel and can stretch your budget, the 2022 is the upgrade path to consider.
