The Jeep Compass enters its 2021 model year with only a few changes. Most notable is the addition of a new 80th Anniversary Edition trim level. Based on Latitude trim, the new Compass includes 19-inch wheels on the outside and leather seats featuring contrast stitching on the inside. Other amenities include power-adjustability for the driver’s seat, a remote engine-start system, and the great 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. In addition to the new trim level, the Compass Limited and Trailhawk trims now get additional advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard equipment. Jeep sells the Compass in seven trim levels, including the new 80th Anniversary Edition. Shoppers can choose between Sport, Latitude, Freedom, Altitude, 80th, Limited, and Trailhawk trims. Shoppers also have a choice between front-wheel drive (FWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD). FWD models get a six-speed automatic transmission while 4WD models get a nine-speed automatic. Regardless of trim and drivetrain, all Compasses get the same engine: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. It’s known for being a bit sluggish, and it doesn’t pair super well with the nine-speed automatic. However, the Compass is relatively fuel-efficient. 22 mpg city, 31 highway, 25 combined with FWD – those numbers stay the same with 4WD, minus one for the highway figure. The Trailhawk trim offers Jeep’s famous Trail Rated 4x4 certification. It features the company’s low-range four-wheel drive with ha 20:1 crawl ratio, hill-descent control, and off-road tires. The Trailhawk also gets a one-inch suspension lift and skid plates, allowing for a 30-degree approach angle, 24-degree breakover angle, and 34-degree departure angle. Add on red tow hooks to the front and rear and up to 19-inches of water fording, and the Compass is capable of more than most vehicles in its class. Stellantis’ Uconnect infotainment system takes care of the Compass’s tech offerings. It’s one of the better systems available, and the 8.4-inch screen offered on the Limited, Trailhawk, and 80th Anniversary Edition trim levels is particularly nice to use. Jeep also added a few advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to the Trailhawk’s list of standard equipment. Buyers now enjoy adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking assist, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. You can buy a Compass in a range of colors—a couple of blues, a couple of reds, plus your typical array of white, silver, black, and gray. We particularly like Olive Green and Spitfire Orange. MSRPs start at $24,095 for a Sport trim with FWD and climb to $31,095 for the Limited 4WD and Trailhawk trims.
