CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Jeep Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 3,343 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,025, 32.5% of 2021 Jeep Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Cherokee 4.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
77.8% of 2021 Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a midsize SUV that arrived on Jeep’s all-new platform for the 2014 model year and carried a name with a lot of history behind it. That legacy helped make the KL-generation Cherokee a talking point from the start, especially because it was meant to follow in the footsteps of the earlier Cherokee that helped define the class. Even so, the 2021 Cherokee’s appeal is less about nostalgia and more about being a vehicle that can do more than many buyers expect.
What makes it distinctive is the combination of technology and everyday usability. The test-drive data highlights impressive, easy-to-use technology, and owner feedback points to a smooth ride, strong value, and numerous safety features. It also has off-road capability that many buyers appreciate. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the design can be polarizing, the base engine is described as underwhelming, and cargo space is limited. For shoppers who want a Cherokee with a broad mix of comfort, capability, and modern features, the 2021 model has a clear identity, even if it does not satisfy everyone on style or practicality.

It’s a nice car, deceptively large inside, and comfortable. I’m average height but on the fluffy side, and it’s a very comfortable fit. Nice smooth ride. A/c feels like a freezer (I bought the car on the hottest day of the year and I was plenty cool on the long drive home.

On the downside, some shoppers note missing convenience features such as Remote Start and a powered tailgate, along with construction issues.

The expert evaluation also describes the Cherokee as a vehicle that can do a lot more than you’d expect, which supports the idea that it delivers consistent everyday usefulness.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the drivetrain, electronics, and overall condition, since some owners mention construction issues. It also helps to focus on the feature set you actually want, because equipment varies meaningfully by trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level Latitude with 17-inch wheels and front-wheel drive looks and feels more basic, while the 80th Anniversary Edition adds 19-inch Granite Crystal wheels and painted lower body cladding for a nicer appearance. The panoramic sunroof is optional, so check whether the specific vehicle has the features you want.
- Powertrain: You can get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower, a 3.2-liter V-6 with 271 hp, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The turbo engine is optional on the Latitude Lux and Limited, and the nine-speed automatic is standard across the lineup.
- Safety package: Lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring are standard on every trim level. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is also part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
- Infotainment: The Cherokee uses Uconnect with a 7-inch touchscreen on the Latitude, Latitude Plus, and Latitude Lux, while the Limited and Trailhawk get an 8.4-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired, not wireless, and the SUV also offers a 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models with the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine are rated at up to 31 mpg highway. The AWD base 2.4-liter engine returns 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city, and 24 mpg combined, while AWD V-6 models with Active Drive II are rated at 21 mpg combined and 18 mpg city.
Which 2021 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Latitude, Latitude Plus, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Latitude: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Cherokee’s core value proposition at the lowest price. It gets the 7-inch Uconnect screen and the standard safety suite, but it is the most basic-feeling version.
- Latitude Plus: This is the better everyday pick if you want a little more equipment without jumping too far up the price ladder. It keeps the 7-inch touchscreen and adds a more appealing balance of features for most shoppers.
- Latitude Lux: This is the best-value trim if you want the stronger 2.0-liter turbo engine option and a more upscale feel without going all the way to the top trims. It also keeps the 7-inch touchscreen.
- Limited: This is the trim to target if you want the 8.4-inch touchscreen and access to adaptive cruise control with stop and go. It also gets the optional turbo engine and suits buyers who want a more feature-rich daily driver.
- Trailhawk: This is the one to choose if off-road capability matters most. It pairs the 8.4-inch screen with Jeep Active Drive Lock and Selec-Speed Crawl Control, and it is the trim most clearly aimed at adventure-minded buyers.
Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is only available on the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is also part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,337 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,998, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $18,998 sits slightly below last year's $21,180.
That decline suggests the Cherokee has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer pricing environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a lower entry point, which can help cushion depreciation over time. Strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment will matter more if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee safe?
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee did not earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Cherokee comes standard with lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is reserved for the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is also part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
The main caveat is headlight performance: upper trims received an Acceptable rating, while the rest received a Marginal rating. That makes trim choice worth paying attention to if safety is a priority.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model stands out for its impressive, easy-to-use technology and broad mix of comfort, capability, and modern features.
The bottom line: If you want the Cherokee’s strongest mix of tech, value, and everyday usability, the 2021 model is a solid place to focus. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market and healthy inventory to compare nearby model years and trim levels before deciding.
