Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson stands out as the final model year of its generation, and that timing gives it a particular appeal for shoppers who want a well-equipped compact SUV without waiting for the next redesign. Hyundai loaded it with plenty of tech and safety features, and it was offered at a competitive price, which helps explain why the older model still makes sense even as a new Tucson was on the way.
It also has a few traits that make it easy to live with day to day. The Tucson’s design is stylish, its cabin is comfortable, and its technology is easy to use. Those strengths help offset its weaker points, which include sluggish performance, an underwhelming base engine, and noticeable noise. Even so, the 2021 Tucson remains attractive for buyers who value comfort, straightforward features, and solid value over outright speed.

CPO so 10/10,000 warranty still valid. Reliable car, nice features, good gas mileage, good value. Pickup lacking but that’s because I was driving a v8 prior.

I was looking for a car that my family could comfortably ride in, and the Tucson was the perfect car for that. Its easy to drive and the ride quality is pretty good. Above all, the long warranty allows you to drive with confidence. However, drivers who seek the fun of driving may not be interested. I think I purchased it for my own purposes.

I really like the blind spot warning signal and the back up camera as well. I thought this car was a great price for only 1 owner, no accidents & low mileage. This car was missing the cargo pkg that should have came with the car as promised. I didn’t shop around for any other models, since this was the only one I wanted. My 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited, I bought brand new and would have kept it for the rest of my life, but on March 20, 2023 it was totaled in an accident.

2021 Hyundai Tucson Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2021 Hyundai Tucson prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2021 Hyundai Tucson cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,831 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,186.11 |
| Year-Round High | $19,029.90 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,027 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.29% |
Prices have softened 6.29% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,781 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $17,186.11, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson a good car?
Yes — the 4.83/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.67/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, great handling, and impressive features for the price. The review summary also points to a stylish design and easy-to-use technology, which fits the Tucson’s practical, everyday appeal.
The trade-offs are familiar ones: some owners wanted more features such as a sunroof, and some packages were not as complete as expected. The expert notes also call out sluggish performance, especially from the base engine, along with a noisy character.
For you, that means the Tucson makes the most sense if you want a well-equipped compact SUV for commuting and family use rather than a sporty one. It also lines up well with shoppers who value comfort and tech over outright acceleration. Good and great deals account for 32.0% of listings, so there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with comfort and value showing up again and again in the reviews. The expert assessment also emphasizes that this generation has been a strong value play, and the powertrain is backed by a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.
That combination suggests the Tucson can be a sensible long-term buy if you choose carefully and keep up with maintenance. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding one that has been properly maintained and not worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Tucson?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, feature operation, and whether the vehicle matches the equipment promised in the listing.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE includes 17-inch alloy wheels, manually adjustable front seats, a digital driver information display, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features such as heated seats, power-adjustable seating, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof.
- Powertrain: The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. The base engine is the weaker choice, and the 2.4-liter is the better pick if you want more relaxed everyday performance.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are reserved for upper trims.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch screen is available, and it adds navigation and wireless device charging on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient version returns 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The AWD version of the same engine returns 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The 2.4-liter FWD version returns 22 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined, while the AWD version returns 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Hyundai Tucson trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE is the budget-friendly starting point, but it leaves you with the smaller 7-inch screen and fewer convenience features than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SEL is the best value for many shoppers because it adds 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rear-seat USB power outlet without jumping too far in price.
- Premium/top trim: The Ultimate is the most fully equipped choice, with an 8-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rain-sensing wipers, and a panoramic sunroof.
The upper-tier trims are also where you get features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, and the 360-degree parking monitor.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Tucson?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,781 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,186.11, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $17,831 sits slightly below last year's $19,027.
That price movement suggests the Tucson has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may have less downside than a buyer who pays closer to the top of the market. Strong equipment, clean history, and good condition should matter more than ever if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson safe?
The Tucson earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring. If you want adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, or blind-spot monitoring, you need to move up to an upper-tier trim.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers a competitive price with plenty of tech and safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,967, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,831 average.
- It brings a larger, redesigned cabin with more passenger and cargo space.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a solid feature set. If you are willing to spend more for a redesign and extra space, the 2022 is the better upgrade path.
