Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Palisade 4.64 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade stands out as a midsize, three-row SUV that blends style, comfort, and practicality in a way that makes it feel more upscale than its price suggests. It is described as affordable, roomy, comfortable, safe, high-tech, enjoyable to drive, and remarkably stylish, and it was critically acclaimed and selling well as it entered its sophomore year. The lineup for 2021 includes SE, SEL, Limited, and a new Calligraphy trim, with base prices ranging from $32,525 to $46,050 before the destination charge.
What makes the 2021 Palisade especially appealing is its premium-feeling cabin and generous space. Its listed strengths include stylish design, premium interior materials, and a spacious third row, and owners also praise the spacious interior, abundant features, comfortable ride, elegant design, and high-tech capabilities. The main drawback is that its performance is fairly pedestrian, and some drivers have noted that the price can feel high, along with minor cabin noise at higher speeds.

Reviewed a 2021 Hyundai Limited FWD on Apr 19, 2025
I purchased my 2021 Hyundai Palisade during the summer of 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the shortage of vehicles, it’s the first vehicle that I NEVER test drove before I purchased it. Fortunately, my youngest brother had one that was similar and he had given me raving reviews about it. So, I wasn’t too concerned about its handling or drivability. During my ownership of the Palisade, it drove and handled superbly well in all road conditions. It didn’t matter what the road conditions were, the Palisade was always well grounded and with good tires, not even heavily wet roads were able to throw it off course. I would travel once or twice a year to Colorado Springs, Co., to visit my daughter and her family and the trips were always smooth and comfortable. Driving the Palisade was an absolute pleasure to do. Now, for the reasons why I traded in the Palisade and purchased a 2025 Ram 1500 instead. The Limited model comes with a sunroof and little did I know but Hyundai uses plastic for the sunroof rail system that allows the sunroof to slide back and forth. Well, I wasn’t a big user of the sunroof and that apparently was my mistake. You see, this last fall, October, 2024, I believe, my sunroof rail system broke. Yes, it flat broke because as I was told, I didn’t use it enough. It was explained to me that since the parts are plastic and that there’s grease along the rail system, I needed to use the sunroof more frequently in order to keep those parts well lubricated by using the sunroof regularly. Since, I didn’t use the sunroof regularly, I may have used it 12 times in my 4 years of owning it, that’s what lead to the rail system being locked up and causing it to break. It makes sense but WOW is that crazy. I was also told that the repair would cost me over $7K!!! That wasn’t going to happen, so with my girlfriend’s help, we taped and sealed the sunroof using some gorilla tape and there were no leaks. It was during this same time that the sunroof broke, I was informed by the Hyundai dealer, following an oil change, that another PLASTIC part had broken. This time it was the PLASTIC oil filter housing unit. Apparently, it had possibly been broken when someone changed the oil filter during an oil change. I can’t prove that but it’s the most logical explanation. Since the sunroof wasn’t leaking and after I found a local mechanic shop to replace the oil filter housing unit, the Hyundai dealer wanted way too much money for the repair, I was content to go on and keep my Hyundai Palisade, which had 108K miles on it, and run off into the sunset with it. Well, not so quick, because I began to notice that there was a possible problem that was developing with the transmission. I never took to a mechanic or service center to be looked at but I believe that the transmission was beginning to slip. There were rare occasions, one or twice a week, where the transmission seemed to make a different sound around 20-30 mph. It wasn’t every day but I did notice it. Well, that was the last straw. There may not have been anything wrong with the transmission at all but I wasn’t going to keep it and find out. Therefore, I decided to trade it in and I purchased the 2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. My time with the Palisade was great and I enjoyed driving it but the reliability and quality of the vehicle was deeply impacted by plastic parts in the wrong locations. Those plastic parts and reliability issues are the direct reasons why I traded in the Palisade once I noticed the possible transmission issue. It was almost like the vehicle was built to last 100K miles, due to its own powertrain warranty and once that was done, so was the vehicle. It’s only due to the fun and pleasure of owning and driving the Palisade for the first problem free 100K miles that I’m even giving the vehicle 3 out of 5 stars. When I purchased the Palisade, I truly thought I had gotten a well equipped vehicle for a bargain. Unfortunately, in the long run, despite the Palisade being well equipped, it wasn’t reliable for the long term and thus, I probably won’t buy another Hyundai ever again. Now, Hyundai and Chevy are the two manufacturers that I will have to avoid. My 1991 Chevy 1500 had to have its transmission rebuilt at only 109K miles nearly 20 years ago and I haven’t purchased a Chevy or GMC vehicle since then. I like dependable and reliable vehicles that last without major repairs being needed around 100K miles. That’s not asking a lot and I don’t see why manufacturers don’t build vehicles that last at least until 150K miles before major repairs are needed, when owners are keeping up with routine maintenance, like myself.

The best features you can get for the year. Best value for $$ other than a Kia Sorrento sx imo. Just be careful of the warranty expiring at a critical time between 160000km and 180000km as these are the times where a lot could break down all at once.

How much does the 2021 Hyundai Palisade cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,728 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,728 |
| Year-Round High | $26,864 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,857 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.65% |
Prices have softened 11.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,227 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Palisade earns a 4.64/5 user rating and a 9/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, abundant features, comfortable ride, elegant design, and high-tech capabilities. Those strengths line up well with the Palisade’s role as a roomy, three-row family SUV that feels more upscale than its price suggests.
The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and some cabin noise at higher speeds. Even so, the market shows 34.1% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers describing it as a vehicle they can count on for family duty. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by highlighting its strong value, generous warranty coverage, and free scheduled maintenance plan.
That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to service records and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk is always tied to how well a specific vehicle was maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if it looks clean on the listing page. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage examples or vehicles with a lot of family-use wear. Focus on cabin condition, electronics, and signs of hard use, since those are the areas most likely to separate a well-kept SUV from a neglected one.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Calligraphy trim adds a different grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, additional lower body trim, unique 20-inch wheels, upgraded interior detailing, and a simulated suede headliner. The Limited remains appealing, but it loses some of that more distinctive exterior treatment and luxury-themed presentation.
- Powertrain: Every Palisade uses a 3.8-liter V6 with 291 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available if you want added traction.
- Safety package: Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, rear occupant alert, active blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited and Calligraphy trims add a Blind View Monitor and a more advanced ultrasonic rear occupant alert system.
- Infotainment: The Palisade offers either an 8-inch or 10.25-inch touchscreen. Only the 8-inch system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the larger screen requires a wired connection. Both systems can pair two smartphones to Bluetooth simultaneously.
- Fuel efficiency: The AWD model is rated at 21 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 21.1 mpg on the driving loop.
Which 2021 Hyundai Palisade trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Palisade’s core space, comfort, and safety without paying for extra luxury touches. It gives you the basic family-SUV formula, but it won’t feel as richly appointed as the higher trims.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience and keeps the Palisade’s upscale feel within reach. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on first.
- Limited: This trim is the better pick if you want more premium features and a more advanced safety setup. It suits you if you care about a richer cabin and more tech without going all the way to the top.
- Calligraphy: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the most distinctive styling and the most upscale cabin presentation. Choose it if you want the Palisade to feel as close to a premium SUV as possible.
Limited and Calligraphy trims add the Blind View Monitor and the more advanced ultrasonic rear occupant alert system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,227 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,728, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade's resale value?
The current average of $23,728 sits slightly below last year's $26,857.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Because the Palisade still has strong demand as a roomy, upscale-feeling family SUV, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade earns top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, rear occupant alert, active blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited and Calligraphy trims add a Blind View Monitor and a more advanced ultrasonic rear occupant alert system.
Highway Drive Assist is a standout feature because it works smoothly and can handle lane-centering and distance control very well, but it is not designed for hands-free driving. You still need to keep your hands on the wheel.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Palisade or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,191, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $23,728 average.
- It offers a fresh sense of style and flair with strong value.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $26,460, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $23,728 average.
- It emphasizes comfort and style with a quiet cabin and a spacious third row.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, equipment, and market availability, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want to pay more for a newer-year alternative, the 2022 is the next step up.
