CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Canyon
overall

Summary
With 1,147 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,475.00, 31.5% of 2021 GMC Canyons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
78.3% of 2021 Canyon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Canyon stands out as a refreshed midsize pickup that borrows some of the big-truck look many buyers want without moving up to a full-size model. It gets a freshened face and a new AT4 off-road-inspired trim, but the truck is otherwise largely the same as before. That makes it appealing to shoppers who want a capable, enjoyable pickup with a more lifestyle-oriented feel, especially since midsize trucks often sit in an awkward value position compared with larger alternatives.
Even so, the 2021 GMC Canyon still shows its age in a few important ways. Its interior materials feel cheap, and the back seat is cramped, which can limit everyday comfort for passengers. The base engine is also described as underwhelming. On the positive side, it offers impressive towing and payload ratings, multiple powertrain options, and multiple body styles, giving buyers a useful mix of capability and configuration choices.

First off, I Love my truck, however with that being said, I wish the back up camera had the overhead view. I also don’t understand having to have the radio/computer updated at a cost to the consumer. Otherwise, again, I love my truck.

Is the 2021 GMC Canyon a good car?
Generally — the 4.25/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its value, appearance, and numerous features, and they also like the spacious interior and luxury-like features for the price. The trade-offs are a stiff, loud ride on the highway and some complaints about the diesel engine lacking power in certain situations. In use-case terms, it fits you best if you want a capable, lifestyle-oriented midsize pickup rather than a pure value play. It also sits in a market where 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a truck people can count on for value, features, and everyday use, with no broad pattern of trouble-free praise beyond that overall satisfaction. The expert evaluation also describes it as a capable, enjoyable pickup that can handle weekend adventure duty without losing composure in normal driving. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related wear and trim-specific equipment issues matter more than headline capability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage truck or one with off-road use. Focus on cabin condition, ride quality, and how the truck was equipped, since the Canyon’s value changes a lot with trim and powertrain. If you want the best day-to-day fit, make sure the truck’s features match how you’ll actually use it.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Elevation Standard comes with manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen, while the Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, a manually sliding rear window, a six-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and aluminum interior accents. The AT4 adds off-road hardware such as all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, and skid plates, while the Denali adds more luxury touches and the larger 8-inch infotainment system.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, but it has to work hard. The optional 3.6-liter V6 makes 308 hp and 275 lb-ft and is standard on the AT4 and Denali, while the 2.8-liter Duramax diesel makes 181 hp and 369 lb-ft and can tow up to 7,700 pounds.
- Safety package: The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert. It is standard on the Denali and optional on other trim levels, so lower trims may leave you without those features unless you add them.
- Infotainment: The standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch screen is optional on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, which also adds navigation, HD radio, a wireless charging pad, and a 4.2-inch color driver display.
- Fuel efficiency: The diesel returns 20 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 mpg city, 28 highway, and 22 combined with 4WD. The base four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 25 highway, and 22 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 mpg city, 24 highway, and 21 combined with 4WD. The gas V6 returns 18 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 17 mpg city, 24 highway, and 19 combined with 4WD.
Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?
The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The Elevation Standard is the least expensive path in, but it lacks the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up the range, and its standard safety equipment is limited to basics.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Elevation is the best value for many shoppers because it adds remote start, automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and more usable everyday convenience without jumping to luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Denali is the most upscale choice, with the larger infotainment screen, Bose audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, wireless charging, LED bed lighting, and the available safety package standard.
- Off-road trim: The AT4 is the one to choose if you want the V6, 4WD, off-road suspension, skid plates, and all-terrain tires, but it makes the most sense if you’ll actually use that hardware.
The Denali is the only trim with the safety package standard, while other trims require you to add it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep distress pricing.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,178 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.68% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,966.80, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $28,430 sits slightly below last year's $30,465.
That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale if you buy at the right number. If you pay close to the lower end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting your loss later. Strong demand for well-kept examples should also help support values over time.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?
It earns 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system. The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trim levels. The Denali also adds an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance. If you’re shopping lower trims, the main caveat is that some driver-assistance features are not standard.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds a refreshed face and the new AT4 off-road-inspired trim.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,815, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,430 average.
- It adds a Denali Black Edition package.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because pricing has eased and the truck already offers strong capability and broad trim choice. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly updated feature set, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who prioritize newer equipment over price.
