CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Ford F-150
overall

Summary
With 9,603 currently listed for sale and an average price of $32,954, 31.9% of 2021 Ford F-150s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Ford F-150 4.84 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
84.2% of 2021 F-150 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford F-150 stands out because Ford redesigned its bestseller with more tech and an optional hybrid powertrain. The update was smaller in scope than the truck’s previous redesign, but it still brought updated bold styling, a revamped interior with more convenience features, and the new Sync 4 infotainment system. It also marked the first time Ford offered an F-150 hybrid, and the PowerBoost was described as the only full-hybrid powertrain available in a full-size pickup truck.
That breadth of choice is another major part of the 2021 Ford F-150’s appeal. Ford offered six trim levels, three cab configurations, three bed sizes, six powertrains, and a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The truck’s strengths include multiple body styles, multiple powertrain options, and impressive technology, while its drawbacks include an underwhelming base engine, interior materials that feel cheap, and advanced safety features that are not standard.

The XLT 302A is the best bang for your buck. The powerboost motor has amazing fuel economy without sacrificing power, plus you get the benefit of a mobile generator. There is a lot of tech in this truck, so time will tell as far as quality, but so far, this truck is perfect.

There are 9,614 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing trims and powertrains.
Is the 2021 Ford F-150 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Ford F-150 earns a 4.84/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, modern technology, and excellent ride comfort. They also like the fuel efficiency of the smaller engines and the truck’s versatility, which makes it a fit for commuting, family duty, and work use.
The trade-offs are familiar for a full-size truck: the base engine is underwhelming, interior materials can feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard. Even so, the F-150’s broad configuration range and tech-forward redesign make it easy to tailor to your needs.
Good and great deals account for 30.8% of listings, so there’s a meaningful share of market-priced inventory to consider.
Is the 2021 Ford F-150 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.84/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a truck that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its trouble-free versatility, strong performance, and comfort over time. Reviewers also highlight that it’s a vehicle you can count on for a wide range of jobs, from commuting to hauling.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by noting good road manners and a well-rounded driving experience, along with a powertrain lineup that gives you plenty of choice. Ford’s warranty coverage is also about average for the segment, which helps support ownership confidence.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core durability and more about choosing a well-maintained example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford F-150?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how a truck was used or maintained. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on drivetrain condition, interior wear, and any signs of heavy towing or work use. It also makes sense to compare trim equipment closely, since the 2021 F-150’s value changes a lot with features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL trim is spartan, while higher trims like King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited bring much more luxurious materials and a more upscale cabin. If you want the best balance of value and comfort, look closely at the mid-to-upper trims rather than assuming the cheapest truck will feel similar.
- Powertrain: You get a wide range of engines, including a 3.3-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8, 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, Power Stroke 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, and the PowerBoost hybrid. The hybrid is the most powerful option, but the non-hybrid 3.5-liter EcoBoost is the better choice if maximum towing matters.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are available at extra cost, so check carefully for feature gaps on lower trims.
- Infotainment: Sync 4 brings an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. Higher trims can add a 12-inch touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Fuel efficiency: The PowerBoost hybrid returns 25 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 24 mpg combined with four-wheel drive. The Power Stroke diesel is listed at 27 mpg highway with 4WD, and the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 matches the hybrid’s highway mpg.
Which 2021 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the work-focused starting point, but the cabin materials are the most basic and the base engine is the weakest part of the lineup. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without many comfort or convenience upgrades.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing you too far up the price ladder. It’s the trim to target if you want a balanced mix of equipment, capability, and cost.
- Lariat: This is the step up if you want a more polished truck with stronger comfort and tech appeal. It suits you if you spend a lot of time in the cabin and want a more premium feel without going all the way to the luxury trims.
- King Ranch: This trim leans into upscale materials, including leather upholstery and wood trim, and it feels much fancier than the lower trims. It’s a good fit if you want a luxury-leaning truck with a distinctive personality.
- Platinum: This is another high-end choice for shoppers who want a more luxurious cabin and a richer feature set. It makes sense if comfort and presentation matter as much as capability.
- Limited: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most premium version of the truck. It’s the trim to consider if you want the fullest expression of the F-150’s upscale side.
Advanced safety features are not standard, so check each trim carefully for the driver-assistance equipment you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford F-150?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 9,614 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,842, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $32,842 sits slightly below last year's $35,282.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, trim desirability, and equipment.
Trucks with stronger feature content and broader appeal tend to hold buyer interest better than bare-bones examples. If you choose a well-equipped trim and keep it clean and documented, you improve your odds of a stronger resale outcome later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.84/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford F-150 safe?
The 2021 Ford F-150 earns a good roof-strength rating from IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard Ford Co-Pilot360 equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are available, but not standard, so you should verify which driver-assistance features are included on the truck you’re considering.
Because full crash-test ratings were not yet available at launch, you should pay close attention to the exact safety equipment on each listing. That matters especially if you want a truck with more advanced driver assistance rather than just the standard baseline package.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.84/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 redesign adds Sync 4, an available PowerBoost hybrid, and a broader tech-forward update.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $28,629, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $32,842 average.
- It offers an accommodating and modern interior with comfortable road manners.
The bottom line: Choose the 2021 if you want the newer tech, the hybrid option, and the broader appeal of the redesigned truck. Consider the 2020 if your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2021’s updates.
