2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in test drive
overall

Ford’s electrified Escape provides a compromise for those not ready to go full EV.
Announced ahead of the 2020 model year, the Ford Escape PHEV already looks like a half-measure in 2021. An electric motor and battery pack provide reasonable driving range in ideal conditions, helping it achieve a commendable combined fuel economy rating from the EPA. But in a rapidly electrifying marketplace, and with many of the most exciting EVs coming from the Blue Oval itself, the Escape PHEV is hard to recommend as a long-term option.

This is the perfect car/suv for us. 98% of our trips are less than 25 miles. We can use the electric motor. The only drawback is there’s not enough of these vehicles available to purchase.

Is the 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in a good car?
Yes — 5/5 from users and 5.67/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 7/10.
The 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in fits you best if you want a practical middle ground and are not ready to go fully electric. It uses an electric motor and battery pack to deliver reasonable driving range in ideal conditions, and it brings a ride quality that stands out as a clear strength.
The trade-offs are just as clear: the design may be polarizing, performance is described as sluggish, and all-wheel drive is not available. That makes it a better match if you value efficiency and everyday comfort over speed, traction options, or a more adventurous personality.
With 36.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in is presented as a straightforward, easy-to-live-with hybrid that emphasizes efficiency and comfort over complexity. Its electric motor and battery pack are described as providing reasonable driving range in ideal conditions, and the power delivery is smooth even if the drivetrain itself is not especially exciting.
Ford also gives you a useful ownership perk: the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the plug-in hybrid setup only really pays off if you can charge regularly and use the battery often.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a plug-in hybrid where charging habits and usage patterns matter. Focus on overall condition, how the cabin and tech have held up, and whether the car has been used in a way that matches your driving routine.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Titanium trim brings a more upscale feel, but the interior still leans utilitarian, with hard plastic on high-touch surfaces and a tacked-on-looking touchscreen. The lower trims are less equipped, so you should pay close attention to whether the features you want are standard or reserved for the top trim.
- Powertrain: Ford offers several Escape engines, but the plug-in hybrid uses the 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with an 88-kW electric motor for 200 horsepower total. It is smooth, but it is also described as underwhelming, and the plug-in hybrid does not offer all-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot 360 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. If you want adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and park assist, you need the Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package.
- Infotainment: You get Sync 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a mix of touchscreen controls with physical knobs and buttons. The system is simple to use, but it is not especially quick.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the plug-in hybrid can travel 37 miles on electric power alone, return 40 mpg in combined driving once the battery is depleted, and achieve 105 MPGe overall. In testing, the car returned about 22 miles of electric range and roughly 35 mpg after the battery was depleted.
Which 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the plug-in hybrid experience at the lowest cost and can live without the extra convenience and display upgrades found higher up.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim if you want a better-equipped cabin without jumping all the way to the top. It adds automatic one-up/down power windows all around the cabin and a 10-way power driver’s seat.
- Titanium: This is the most upscale choice, and it is the one to buy if you want the nicest tech and comfort features. It gets the 12.3-inch digital driver display and a B&O premium stereo with ten speakers.
If safety equipment matters most, note that Ford Co-Pilot 360 is standard, while the Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and park assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent options.
- Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 89 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 82.0% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in safe?
The 2021 Ford Escape earns Top Safety Pick recognition from the IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot 360 comes standard, with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. If you want Ford’s more advanced driver-assistance setup, you need the Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package, which adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and park assist.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-in or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model stands out as a practical middle ground for buyers who want reasonable electric driving range and easy-to-use technology without going fully electric.
The bottom line: If you want a plug-in hybrid Escape that emphasizes efficiency, comfort, and straightforward tech, the 2021 is the right place to start. If you are price-sensitive, the market still gives you enough deal activity to shop selectively, but you should be realistic about the car’s sluggish performance and the fact that it works best when you can charge it regularly.
