CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Ford Escape
overall

Summary
With 4,396 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,551.00, 33.0% of 2021 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Ford Escape 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
80.7% of 2021 Escape models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV that matters to Ford’s lineup because it serves as a logical choice for shoppers who might otherwise have looked at the brand’s sedans or hatchbacks. Redesigned for 2020, it carries that more car-like styling into 2021 with only minimal changes, so this model year is best understood as a refinement of the updated Escape rather than a major reinvention. The trim-level lineup of S, SE, SEL, and Titanium carries over as well, and the available powertrain choices give it broad appeal for buyers who want flexibility.
What stands out most about the 2021 Escape is its combination of multiple powertrain options, great ride quality, and easy-to-use technology. It also emphasizes fuel efficiency, which fits the direction Ford took with the redesign. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the styling is described as uninspired, the base engine is underwhelming, and the interior materials feel cheap. Even so, the 2021 Ford Escape remains appealing as a practical, mainstream crossover with a comfortable ride and a straightforward feature set.

This car is best with the higher trim and solid 2.0 Turbo awd drive train. One of the best values in the segment. Also plenty of room for performance increase if thats your thing.

Bought this vehicle certified Gold certified for my daughter. Great value vs. competitors, great standard safety features and great mpg. You wont win any drag races, but the engine is absolutely fine. The car is sharp looking and practical. And Ford dealers are everywhere.

The features were good. The reliability rating is terrible. The fact that it had 2 owners with 7000 miles on it was a turn off.

Generally — the 2021 Ford Escape earns a 4/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
It fits as a compact crossover for you if you want a practical, mainstream SUV with multiple powertrain choices, a comfortable ride, and straightforward tech. The expert notes also point to easy-to-use technology and strong fuel-efficiency focus, while the styling is more generic than some rivals and the interior materials feel cheap.
Trade-offs: the base engine is underwhelming, and the cabin materials do not feel especially upscale. If you value flexibility and everyday usability more than standout design or premium finishes, the Escape makes more sense.
There are 28.7% good or great deals in the market, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Escape’s redesign emphasis on practicality, fuel efficiency, and easy-to-use technology supports its case as a sensible used buy. The expert notes also describe the base three-cylinder engine as more than adequate in practice, and the hybrid powertrain as smooth in its transition between electric and gasoline power.
Ford’s cost-effectiveness notes also point to a three-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which helps frame the ownership experience.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a well-worn example may show the same chassis and interior compromises the experts called out, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Escape?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a pre-purchase inspection. Focus on wear, maintenance records, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering. It also helps to compare condition closely across listings, since the Escape’s value depends heavily on trim and powertrain.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S trim is the most basic, with a small 4.2-inch touchscreen, while higher trims add more equipment such as an 8-inch screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and available premium appearance packages. The base cabin is also described as having low-rent materials, so higher trims may feel more satisfying if you care about interior presentation.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are also available, and the plug-in hybrid can drive significant distances on electric power alone.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, traffic-sign recognition, park assist, and Evasive Steering Assist.
- Infotainment: Base models get a 4.2-inch touchscreen, while SE and above move to an 8-inch touchscreen with pinch-and-zoom capability. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in 4G LTE WiFi hotspot are standard, but wireless smartphone integration is not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 1.5-liter engine is rated at 30 mpg combined, or 28 mpg combined with AWD. The 2.0-liter AWD model is rated at 26 mpg combined. The hybrid returns 41 mpg combined with FWD or 40 mpg combined with AWD, and the plug-in hybrid is rated at 105 MPGe combined in electric mode with 37 miles of electric range.
Which 2021 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Escape is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Escape lineup. You get the core infotainment and safety basics, but the small screen and simpler cabin make it the least appealing choice if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen and more everyday convenience without pushing you into the highest price tier. If you want a balanced mix of equipment and value, this is the trim to target.
- SEL: This is the trim to consider if you want a more polished feel, since it unlocks dual-zone automatic climate control and can be paired with appearance upgrades. It suits you if comfort and a nicer cabin matter more than keeping the purchase as inexpensive as possible.
- Titanium: This is the most upscale gas-model trim, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. Choose it if you want the most features and a more premium experience, but it makes the most sense when you specifically want the top equipment set.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ remains the upgrade to look for if you want more advanced driver assistance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Escape?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,457 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,477.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $16,468 sits slightly below last year's $18,923.
That softer pricing means the Escape has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help you if you buy now and sell later. A lower entry price can also reduce the amount of value you stand to lose over your ownership period.
If you choose a well-equipped trim and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of holding buyer interest later. The market still shows enough demand to support resale, especially for examples with desirable equipment and clean history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford Escape safe?
The 2021 Escape earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, traffic-sign recognition, park assist, and Evasive Steering Assist.
One caveat is that IIHS headlight performance varies by trim, with only Acceptable and Marginal ratings depending on equipment, so you should pay attention to the specific trim and lighting setup.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds minor updates like new appearance packages, an available tow package, and slightly improved fuel economy for the base powertrain.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,516, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $16,468 average.
- It was designed to feel stylish and modern, with strong tech and safety content.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing trend, broader inventory, and the small updates that came with 2021, this is the better default choice. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2020 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one in strong condition with the equipment you want.
