Why it stands out
Ford lets the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport out to romp, and that spirit comes through in its lively, capable personality. In testing, it came across as a spunky compact two-row crossover SUV that is attractive and well suited to both on- and off-pavement adventures. Its stylish design, great handling, and impressive technology help it stand out in a crowded class.
There are tradeoffs, though. The main drawback called out in testing is that the interior materials feel cheap, and owner feedback echoes concerns about cabin quality, especially the small back seat. Even so, the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport has clear appeal for buyers who want a compact SUV with a more adventurous character than the usual commuter crossover.

This is the car I ended up getting and it was amazing!! I love the cute features of the bronco tied with its functionality. I do a lot of highway driving but also love to go on adventures and do a bit of off-roading this is the perfect vehicle for both.

This is the first vehicle I have ever purchased without having the opportunity to see it in advance, due to the shortage of vehicles overall. I enjoy the performance and handling thus far. Great turning radius. I very much enjoy the medium size of the vehicle as an SUV. It is not compact yet it is not bulky. There is ample room in the back for most needs, especially with the rear seats folded down. The leg room in the back seat is limited, but adequate. I am glad to have purchased the upgraded Outer Banks Model. The added features were worth the cost of the upgrade.

Is the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport a good car?
Generally — the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport earns a 4.15/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Cost effectiveness.
Owners repeatedly praise its style, good fuel economy, and off-road capability, and many also like its adventurous personality. The main trade-offs are cabin quality and the small back seat, while some shoppers also point to pricing as a concern versus cheaper rivals.
It fits best if you want a compact SUV that feels more adventurous than a typical commuter crossover, especially if you value weekend versatility and distinctive design. With 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport reliable?
Owners rate it 4.15/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that many owners feel good about living with over time, especially when it comes to its adventurous character and day-to-day usability. The ownership experience also comes across as dependable for buyers who want a compact SUV that can handle both commuting and trail use.
The expert drive notes that it has good manners on pavement and a capable setup off-road, which supports the idea that it should be easy to count on for mixed-use driving. Ford also includes a broad standard safety suite, which can help reduce ownership stress.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is not mechanical drama so much as whether the cabin condition and feature set still match your expectations.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Bronco Sport?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because even a strong accident-free share does not guarantee the individual vehicle you’re considering has a clean past. Prioritize a close inspection of the cabin, since owner feedback and testing both point to interior quality as a key weak spot. Pay extra attention to the back seat and overall wear, especially if you plan to use the SUV as a family hauler.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base model starts with 17-inch Sparkle Silver wheels, while Big Bend adds 17-inch Carbonized Gray-painted high-gloss aluminum wheels. Outer Banks moves up to 18-inch machined-face aluminum Ebony Black-painted wheels with all-season tires, and Badlands uses the same wheels with 28.5-inch all-terrain tires. First Edition gets 17-inch Ebony Black-painted wheels with 29-inch all-terrain tires. The cabin also steps up from cloth seats to leather-trimmed, heated sport-contour bucket seats and then to Navy Pier Leather power front seats on First Edition, so the lower trims are the ones where you’ll feel the biggest feature gap.
- Powertrain: The 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder makes 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque in Base, Big Bend, and Outer Banks. Badlands and First Edition use a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with 245 hp and 275 lb-ft. All versions use an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, and the bigger engine is paired with the more capable off-road hardware.
- Safety package: Every trim comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360, which includes pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, forward collision warning and dynamic brake support, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, auto high-beam headlamps, and a reversing camera. Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is available on all trims except Base, and road-sign recognition is not available on Big Bend.
- Infotainment: The Bronco Sport uses an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with SYNC 3. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Ford+Alexa and SiriusXM are available. FordConnect with 4G LTE WiFi hotspot is standard.
- Fuel efficiency: Owners praise its good fuel economy.
Which 2021 Ford Bronco Sport trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is offered in 5 trim levels: Base, Big Bend, Outer Banks, Badlands, and First Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the Bronco Sport’s core personality, standard all-wheel drive, and the full Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable skipping some convenience features.
- Big Bend: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability while staying on the 1.5-liter powertrain. It’s a smart middle ground if you want a better-equipped Bronco Sport without jumping to the pricier off-road-focused models.
- Outer Banks: This trim leans more toward comfort and appearance, with upgraded wheels, available premium audio, and more convenience features. It suits you if you want a nicer cabin and more road-going polish.
- Badlands: This is the more capable choice, pairing the 2.0-liter engine with the advanced 4x4 system, twin-clutch rear-drive unit, all-terrain tires, Trail Control, metal bash plates, and seven G.O.A.T. modes. Choose it if off-road ability matters most.
- First Edition: This is the most fully equipped version and bundles nearly everything into one package. It’s the pick if you want the most complete Bronco Sport and don’t mind paying for it.
Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is available on all trims except Base, and road-sign recognition is not available on Big Bend.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Bronco Sport?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,174 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.46% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,391, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport's resale value?
The current average of $20,391 sits slightly below last year's $22,772.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the vehicle more approachable for you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may depend more on condition, trim, and how well the vehicle has been maintained than on broad market momentum alone.
Because the model still has solid demand from shoppers who want a compact SUV with adventure appeal, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.15/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Every trim comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360, which includes pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, forward collision warning and dynamic brake support, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, auto high-beam headlamps, and a reversing camera. Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is available on all trims except Base, and it adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane centering, evasive steering assist, a voice-activated touchscreen navigation system with pinch-to-zoom capability, SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link, and road-sign recognition, though road-sign recognition is not available on Big Bend.
The safety setup is broad for the class, but there are no crash-worthiness ratings yet from IIHS or NHTSA in the provided data. That means you should lean more heavily on the standard driver-assistance equipment and your own inspection when evaluating a used example.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.46% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.15/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model introduced the Bronco Sport’s adventurous compact-SUV formula with strong handling, useful technology, and clear off-road character.
The bottom line: If you want the first model year of this Bronco Sport formula and you value its style, capability, and tech, the 2021 is a compelling place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can use the softer market and broad inventory to focus on the best-equipped, cleanest example rather than rushing into the first one you see.
