Used 2021 BMW X5 for Sale near Rhode Island

How much does the 2021 BMW X5 cost?

Prices have softened 13.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,272 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 BMW X5 earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, high-quality interior, and advanced technology. They also point to strong value retention, which matters if you want a premium SUV that still feels desirable after a few years.

The trade-offs are that pricing can climb quickly once you start adding options, and advanced safety features are not standard. That makes it a better fit if you want a polished, upscale family SUV and are comfortable paying more for the equipment you want.

With 37.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback highlights a dependable-feeling SUV with a smooth ride and a reputation for holding its value well. That combination usually points to a vehicle that buyers feel confident living with over time.

The expert drive notes also emphasize the X5’s refined cabin and the way the plug-in hybrid transitions seamlessly between electric and gasoline power. BMW also includes a broad standard equipment list, which can help reduce the need to add costly extras later.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the X5 can become expensive if you need more features, more complex powertrains, or higher running costs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior damage, and whether the features you want were actually installed from the factory.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Standard xLine models emphasize an upscale look with matte aluminum grilles, satin aluminum exterior trim, and full adaptive LED headlights, while M Sport models add more aggressive styling with body-color trim, an M sports steering wheel, M-specific pedals, and model-exclusive interior trim strips. If you want the sportier appearance and cabin details, M Sport is the one to target.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, a 600-hp X5 M, and a plug-in hybrid with 389 hp, 443 lb-ft, and up to 30 miles of electric range. All engines use an eight-speed automatic, and the base model is the only rear-wheel-drive version.
• Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fatigue and focus alert, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, but it is not fully hands-free.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, five USB ports, voice recognition, a 10-speaker sound system, automatic climate control, proximity key, and a panoramic moonroof. Available upgrades include a head-up display, wireless smartphone charger, Wi-Fi hot spot, and premium audio systems.
• Fuel efficiency: The X5 xDrive45e is rated at 50 MPGe when using electricity and gas, and about 20 mpg combined when running strictly on gasoline. The X5 xDrive is rated at 23 mpg combined, while the X5 M50i gets 18 mpg combined and the X5 M gets 15 mpg combined.

Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, X5 M, and X5 M Competition.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the best-value starting point if you want the core X5 experience without jumping into the pricier performance models. It gives you the standard six-cylinder powertrain, rear-wheel drive is available here, and you still get the X5’s upscale design and strong standard tech.
• xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the ability to drive on electricity for short trips. It adds the most efficiency-focused twist in the lineup, though the trade-off is that its driving feel is less engaging than the more traditional gas models.
• M50i: This is the right pick if you want a big jump in power and a more performance-oriented feel without going all the way to the full M models. It suits buyers who care more about acceleration and premium presence than fuel economy.
• X5 M: This is the hardcore performance choice, with 600 horsepower and a much more aggressive mission. It makes sense if you want the most serious driving experience in the lineup and are willing to accept the higher running costs.
• X5 M Competition: This is the top performance trim, and it is for you if you want the most powerful version mentioned here. It builds on the X5 M’s formula with even more output, so it’s the one to choose if outright performance is your priority.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package is still worth checking carefully if you want the most advanced driver-assistance setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.

• Deal availability: 37.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,272 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $31,707, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $31,707 sits slightly below last year's $36,639.

That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing gives you a clearer baseline for estimating depreciation from here.

The X5’s strong owner satisfaction and premium positioning should help it stay attractive to used shoppers. Even so, resale will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and how many costly options or performance upgrades the vehicle has.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?

The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fatigue and focus alert, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera.

The main caveat is that the hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package did not perform consistently in testing. The system struggled with stopped traffic and lane markings in sunlight and light rain, which means you should not assume the most advanced driver-assistance setup will work flawlessly in every situation.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 37.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model year adds the second-generation plug-in hybrid variant to the lineup, giving you another powertrain choice.

The bottom line: The 2021 X5 makes sense if you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with broad powertrain choice, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that currently favors careful shoppers. If you’re mainly chasing the lowest possible price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2021 stands out if you want the plug-in hybrid option and a solid mix of inventory and deal availability.
