Overview
The 2021 BMW M5, which has been the benchmark for midsize luxury performance sedans for nearly four decades, gets refreshed styling and feature updates for the 2021 model year. This BMW competes against cars like the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, Porsche Panamera, and Audi S6.
The aggressive sedan gets refreshed styling on the front and rear ends. For wheels, 19-inch alloys come standard and the Competition package upgrades to 20-inch wheels. Blue front brake calipers come standard, but they can be swapped out for red or high gloss black calipers at no charge. BMW adds Brands Hatch Grey, Motegi Red Metallic, Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, Aventurine Red II Metallic, and matte Frozen Bluestone Metallic to the paint palette.
Every M5 gets a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Base specs are 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. This year, the Competition model is instead sold as a Competition package, which brings engine tuning for 617 hp and 553 lb-ft, a new track mode, and an updated suspension system. Other features include a transmission oil cooler, an active differential, and optional carbon-ceramic brakes. According to the EPA, the M5 is rated for 17 mpg combined.
The M5 also gets a refreshed interior, though standard features like leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel carry over. Newly standard interior features for 2021 include remote start and four-zone automatic climate control.
This model year, the M5’s infotainment system gets upgraded to a 12.3-inch display. It also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless-device charging, and a Harman Kardon stereo system. Android Auto compatibility now joins Apple CarPlay, and a new cloud-based navigation system is on board, too.
Standard safety features include a reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a head-up display (HUD). Options include adaptive cruise control and adaptive lane control.
These welcome updates help the BMW M5 retain its status as an aspirational, yet reasonably attainable performance sedan.

Is the 2021 BMW M5 a good car?
The 2021 BMW M5 is a strong choice if you want a high-performance luxury sedan that still works well for everyday driving. BMW’s sixth-generation M5 pairs serious speed with added usability, and the 2021 model brings refreshed styling plus a new iDrive system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
It also benefits from xDrive all-wheel drive for better grip and all-weather traction, while the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 delivers 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The tradeoff is that its performance focus can make neglected examples a concern, and the electric steering was not universally welcomed.
Overall, it makes the most sense if you want a fast, modern sedan with real everyday versatility, and 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 BMW M5 reliable?
The 2021 BMW M5 is described as relatively new, with no major reported problem areas or concerns, which supports its case as a used performance sedan. Its combination of updated tech, strong performance, and all-wheel-drive traction also points to a well-rounded package.
That said, it is still a high-performance BMW, so long-term ownership risk is higher if the car has been neglected or driven hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW M5?
At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car has been maintained consistently, since performance sedans can hide expensive wear if they were abused.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW M5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 95 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 70.5% of listings are accident-free.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW M5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It adds the M5 CS, a more powerful and track-focused performance variant.
The bottom line: The 2021 BMW M5 is the better pick if you want the refreshed tech and a broader used-market selection without moving into the more extreme 2022 setup. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2021 is still the smarter path to a fast, usable luxury sedan, while the 2022 makes more sense if you specifically want the added performance focus of the M5 CS.

| Engine | 4.4L 600 hp V8 | 2.9L 325 hp V6 |
