Is the 2021 BMW M4 a good car?

Yes — you rate it 5/5, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

The 2021 BMW M4 is built for drivers who care as much about the experience as the destination, and it is especially appealing if you want a car that feels engaging rather than merely fast. It pairs a powerful engine with a fun-to-drive character, and the availability of a manual gearbox makes it even more compelling for enthusiasts.

The trade-offs are clear: the ride quality is poor, fuel economy is poor, and the back seat is cramped. That means it fits best if you are willing to give up some everyday comfort and practicality in exchange for driving enjoyment.

Good and great deals account for 31.6% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 BMW M4 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The M4 is described as a performance car that delivers a marvelous driving experience, and the expert evaluation also points to a smooth, eager twin-turbo inline-six and a manual gearbox that is easy to manage in traffic.

The performance notes also emphasize structural bracing, track-ready cooling systems, and standard M hardware, which support the car’s hard-use credibility. On the ownership side, BMW notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a car built for hard driving may have seen harder-than-average use, so condition and maintenance history matter more than mileage alone.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW M4?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a performance car that may have been driven aggressively. Focus on signs of wear that match the car’s intended use, including brakes, tires, clutch feel, suspension behavior, and any evidence of track use or poor maintenance.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard M4 comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, while the M4 Competition adds an eight-speed automatic and extra power. The manual car lacks several driver-assist features that require the Competition’s automatic transmission.
• Powertrain: The standard car uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The M4 Competition raises output to 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet, and BMW says it reaches 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.
• Safety package: The Driving Assistance Professional Package on the M4 Competition includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, evasive-steering assistance, active blind-spot protection, and extended traffic-jam assistant technology. The manual-transmission car lacks several of these driver-assist features.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, navigation, connected services, and a Harman Kardon premium surround-sound audio system. The Executive Package adds a WiFi hotspot, wireless smartphone charging, and gesture control.
• Fuel efficiency: The M4 returned 20.2 mpg on the test loop, exceeding the official EPA estimate of 19 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2021 BMW M4 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW M4 is offered in 2 trim levels: M4 and M4 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• M4: This is the one to buy if you want the manual gearbox and the most engaging version of the car’s character. It delivers the core M4 experience with the twin-turbo inline-six, rear-wheel drive, and the enthusiast-friendly setup that makes this car special. It is the best fit if you value driver involvement over maximum straight-line speed.
• M4 Competition: This trim adds more power and an eight-speed automatic, and it is the better choice if you want the quickest version and access to the available driver-assistance package. It suits you best if you want the M4’s performance with a more modern automatic setup.

The manual-transmission M4 lacks several driver-assist features that require the M4 Competition’s automatic transmission.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW M4?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you should shop carefully and compare condition, equipment, and history before making an offer.

• Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 247 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 79.8% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2021 BMW M4 safe?

The 2021 BMW M4 does not have crash-test ratings listed here.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The M4 Competition offers the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, evasive-steering assistance, active blind-spot protection, and extended traffic-jam assistant technology. The standard M4 still includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, speed-limit recognition, front and rear collision-preparation systems, and a post-collision braking system.

The manual-transmission car lacks several driver-assist features that require the M4 Competition’s automatic transmission, so safety equipment is one of the clearest trim differences to watch.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW M4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out for its manual gearbox and enthusiast-focused driving character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• The Competition gains xDrive all-wheel drive and a convertible joins the lineup.

The bottom line: Choose the 2021 if you want the purist, driver-focused M4 experience, especially with the manual transmission. If you are price-sensitive, the 2021 can still make sense, but you should shop carefully for condition and history because this is a performance car that may have been driven hard.
