How much does the 2021 BMW M4 cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

With 241 listings available, you have a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2021 BMW M4 a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 7.5/10 expert rating point to a car that strongly delivers on its mission. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

The 2021 BMW M4 is built around a powerful engine and a manual transmission option, which makes it especially appealing if you want a more involved driving experience. It is also described as fun to drive, with a clear focus on driver enjoyment over everyday comfort.

The trade-offs are real: the ride quality is poor, fuel economy is poor, and the back seat is cramped. If you want a performance coupe that prioritizes engagement over practicality, those compromises may be acceptable.

Only 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to shop carefully to find the best value.

Is the 2021 BMW M4 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2021 BMW M4 is presented as a well-engineered performance car with strong driving hardware and a smooth, eager twin-turbo inline-six. Its manual transmission is described as easy to manage in traffic, and the car’s standard seats and luxury trappings support daily use.

The performance write-up also emphasizes that the engine is smooth and eager, while the car’s braking and steering hardware are built for hard use. On the cost side, BMW’s broader ownership approach is framed as premium and refined, though the model’s high-performance nature still means you should expect more wear exposure than you would from a typical commuter car.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a car like this may have been driven hard, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW M4?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a performance car that may have seen spirited use. Focus on wear items, signs of hard driving, and whether the car’s condition matches its mileage and asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes a standard coupe and a Competition version. The standard car is the more driver-focused choice if you want the manual transmission, while the Competition adds more power and an automatic. The base manual car also lacks several driver-assist features that require the Competition’s automatic transmission.
• Powertrain: The standard model uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, while the Competition raises output to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. The manual gearbox is a major draw if you want a more involved drive.
• Safety package: The Driving Assistance Professional Package on the Competition includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, evasive-steering assistance, active blind-spot protection, and extended traffic-jam assistant. The manual car does not get those features.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, navigation, connected services, and a Harman Kardon premium surround-sound audio system. The Executive Package adds a WiFi hotspot, wireless smartphone charging, gesture control, and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The car is described as having poor fuel economy, and the test loop returned 20.2 mpg, above the official 19 mpg combined estimate.

Which 2021 BMW M4 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW M4 is offered in 2 trim levels: standard M4 and M4 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• M4: This is the one to choose if you want the manual transmission and the most involved driving experience. It keeps the car’s core performance character intact while giving you the enthusiast-friendly setup that defines this model year.
• M4 Competition: This is the better pick if you want more power and are fine giving up the manual for the automatic. It also unlocks the available Driving Assistance Professional Package, which adds the most advanced driver-assistance features.

The manual-transmission M4 lacks several driver-assist features that require the Competition’s automatic transmission.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW M4?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop with a clear target and be ready to move when the right car appears.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 241 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $63,522, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW M4's resale value?

The current average of $65,179 sits slightly above last year's $64,891.

That small increase suggests the market has stayed relatively stable, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price trend usually means you are less likely to face a sharp drop in value over a short ownership period.

Because the model’s pricing has held firm, a well-kept example should remain easier to position competitively when you decide to list it. Strong condition and documented maintenance will matter even more on a performance coupe like this.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW M4 safe?

The 2021 BMW M4 does not have crash-test ratings listed here.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The manual-transmission car lacks several driver-assist features that require the Competition’s automatic transmission. On the Competition, BMW offers the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, evasive-steering assistance, active blind-spot protection, and extended traffic-jam assistant.

Even the standard M4 includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, speed-limit recognition, front and rear collision-preparation systems, and post-collision braking. The main caveat is that the most advanced assistance tech is tied to the Competition and its automatic transmission.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW M4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It delivers a manual-transmission, driver-focused experience that the next year broadens with more body and drivetrain choices.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $69,467, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $65,179 average.
• It adds xDrive all-wheel drive on the top-spec Competition and a soft-top convertible.

The bottom line: If you want the most engaging version and prefer to keep costs closer to the current market average, the 2021 is the better fit. If you want the newer model’s added drivetrain and body-style options and are willing to pay more, the 2022 is the stronger upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2021 remains the smarter buy.
