CarGurus Analysis: 2021 BMW 5 Series
overall

Summary
With 811 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,732, 37.2% of 2021 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
76.4% of 2021 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 5 Series is a midsize luxury sedan that blends sportier-than-average driving dynamics with the tech and luxury features expected in this segment. BMW’s midcycle refresh for 2021 brings a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and subtle styling changes, giving the car a more modern feel without abandoning its core mission. It also offers multiple powertrain options, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want some choice in how the car drives.
What makes the 2021 BMW 5 Series distinctive is that it still tries to preserve some of the character that made earlier 5 Series models appealing, even as the brand has moved in a more mainstream direction. The ride quality is a strength, and the technology is impressive, while owners also praise the powerful performance, luxurious comfort, refined interior, and handling. At the same time, advanced safety features are not standard, which is a notable drawback in a car positioned this way.

I like everything about the car except the feature that kills the engine when stopped. I realize that this is not a problem in Sport Mode, but Sport Mode is a little too jumpy in this 540i. I run my 540d in Sport mode exclusively and it’s torque curve is perfect. The 540d has better power at all speeds.

Excellent Car, Real Rocket with 550 trim or M5 variants. Great for a long trip and if you are in a state that dont require the UGLY front license plate it shows how elegant the lines are. I LOVE mine.

How much does the 2021 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,683 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,620 |
| Year-Round High | $31,728 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,733 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.61% |
Prices have softened 9.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 806 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.
You get a strong mix of powerful performance, luxurious comfort, and a refined interior, and owners also frequently praise the handling and overall classy feel. The overview points to a midsize luxury sedan that still offers sportier-than-average driving dynamics, plus a refreshed infotainment setup and multiple powertrain choices.
The main trade-offs are that the car can feel a bit distant compared with older BMW sports sedans, and advanced safety features are not standard. Even so, 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels reliable, refined, and trouble-free in the ways that matter to shoppers who want a premium sedan they can count on. The expert evaluation also emphasizes BMW’s impeccable engineering and the car’s solid overall execution, which supports the impression of dependable ownership.
BMW’s warranty coverage is four years or 50,000 miles, with four years of roadside assistance, which helps early ownership. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about how well the car was maintained and optioned.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or more complex option packages. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the features you care about actually work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Lower trims get standard SensaTec upholstery rather than real leather, while Dakota leather and Nappa leather are available at extra cost. The M Sport Package adds new front and rear bumpers, and the cabin’s restrained design and BMW-specific layout are part of the car’s appeal.
- Powertrain: The 530i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 540i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, making 335 hp and 362 lb-ft. The 530e plug-in hybrid combines a four-cylinder engine and electric motor for 288 hp and 310 lb-ft, and it can drive on electric power alone for significant distances.
- Safety package: Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist. Advanced safety features are not standard.
- Infotainment: You get a standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with iDrive 7, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM 360L, and a built-in WiFi hotspot are standard, and voice control is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 540i’s mild-hybrid setup is rated at 26 mpg combined, 23 mpg city, and 31 mpg highway.
Which 2021 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, and 530e.
Here's the short version:
- 530i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 5 Series experience with the 2.0-liter turbo four, standard rear-wheel drive, and the refreshed tech package. It’s the value play if you want the badge, the ride quality, and the cabin without stretching for more power.
- 540i: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest all-around balance. You get the 3.0-liter inline-six, the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and a much quicker feel, which makes it the sweet spot for shoppers who care about performance and refinement.
- 530e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the ability to drive on electric power alone for significant distances. It suits you best if efficiency and short-range EV driving matter more than outright performance.
The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 806 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,620, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $28,683 sits slightly below last year's $31,733.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than assuming the model will hold its price automatically.
Well-optioned examples with the right features should remain easier to move than stripped cars, especially because shoppers in this segment often compare equipment closely. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series safe?
The 2021 BMW 5 Series hasn’t been crash-tested by IIHS, but the virtually identical 2020 model earned a Top Safety Pick+ award with good scores in all crash tests and front-crash prevention tests. The standard headlights were rated marginal, while optional lights were rated good.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist, and BMW says the system can help pull the car onto the shoulder if the driver is incapacitated.
The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should check carefully for the package you want. Headlight performance also depends on whether the car has the optional lights rather than the standard setup.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- BMW’s 2021 refresh brings a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and subtle styling updates.
The bottom line: The 2021 model is the right path if you want the refreshed tech, strong owner satisfaction, and a broad mix of powertrains in a midsize luxury sedan. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2021’s updated equipment and softened pricing make it the cleaner buy for many shoppers.
