How much does the 2021 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 8.38% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 818 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used 5 Series options to compare.

Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2021 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious comfort, refined interior, handling, and classy overall feel. The overview also points to a midsize luxury sedan that blends sportier-than-average driving dynamics with the tech and luxury features expected in its class, plus a refreshed look and updated infotainment for this year.

The trade-offs are that it has moved away from the more enthusiast-focused character some BMW fans expect, and some drivers find the engine auto-off behavior annoying, especially in Sport Mode. It also leans more toward a luxury car playing at being sporty than a true driver’s car.

With a 32.2% good-or-great deal share, you still have room to shop selectively rather than rush.

Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels powerful, luxurious, and refined, with a cabin and driving experience that many owners clearly trust and enjoy over time. The expert evaluation also describes the 5 Series as a polished, well-engineered sedan with smooth operation and sophisticated driver-assist tech.

BMW’s standard warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles, with four years of free roadside assistance.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about complexity, options, and maintenance costs as the car ages.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a luxury sedan like this, where option content and condition can vary a lot from one car to the next. Focus on how the car was maintained, whether the features work properly, and whether the trim and equipment match what you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Lower trims get standard SensaTec upholstery rather than real leather, while Dakota leather and Nappa leather are available at extra cost. The interior is restrained and familiar, but the base setup is less upscale than higher-option cars.
• Powertrain: The 530i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 horsepower, while the 540i adds a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The 530e plug-in hybrid is also offered with an electric motor and can drive solely on electric power for significant distances.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist.
• Infotainment: You get a standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a built-in WiFi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i mild-hybrid is rated at 26 mpg combined, 23 mpg city, and 31 mpg highway. The 530i can do zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, and the 530e can drive on electric power for significant distances.

Which 2021 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, and 530e.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the 248-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, standard rear-wheel drive, and the full updated tech suite. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the 5 Series and still care about comfort, technology, and everyday refinement.
• 540i: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest balance of performance and luxury. The 3.0-liter inline-six, 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and available xDrive make it the most compelling all-around version for shoppers who want more power without stepping into the high-performance models.
• 530e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the ability to drive solely on electric power for significant distances. It suits buyers who prioritize efficiency and short-distance electric driving over outright performance.

The safety package is a meaningful upgrade because adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist are part of the Driving Assistance Plus Package rather than standard equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 818 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.38% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 75.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,490, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $28,490 sits slightly below last year's $31,097.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. The current range also suggests there is still room for value-conscious shoppers to negotiate.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2021 BMW 5 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS based on the virtually identical 2020 model, with top “good” scores in all crash tests and front-crash prevention tests. The standard headlights were rated “marginal,” while optional lights received a “good” rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist, which can help pull the car onto the shoulder if the driver is incapacitated.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should check carefully for the package content you want.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.38% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s 2021 refresh adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and subtle styling changes.

The bottom line: The 2021 model is the better pick if you want the refreshed tech and styling, plus a market that has softened enough to create real shopping opportunities. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2021 gives you the updated package and strong owner satisfaction at a more favorable used price than last year.
