overall

Summary
With 193 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $24,549, 28.5% of 2021 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW 3 Series 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sedan that still carries BMW’s sporty reputation, even as this generation leans more toward comfort and convenience than earlier versions. It is also notable for the addition of the 330e plug-in hybrid model to the lineup for this model year, giving buyers a more efficiency-minded option within the range. BMW’s own test-drive summary describes the car as competent but unremarkable, which suggests a sedan that is polished and well-rounded rather than especially dramatic.
Even so, the 2021 BMW 3 Series has clear strengths. BMW’s test-drive notes point to great handling and impressive technology, and owners commonly praise the exceptional handling, powerful performance, luxurious interior, fuel economy, and trunk space. The main drawback called out in the test-drive data is that advanced safety features are not standard, so shoppers may need to look carefully at equipment levels if that matters to them.

Extremely responsive car with Good fuel economy. Driving assist system is extremely helpful as well. The audio is somewhat lacking (speakers) but NOT a deterrent to the car at all.

The car is beautiful, but I couldn’t buy it because it was making noises when I drove it. I can’t buy a car that I need to bring to the shop as soon as I get it.

How much does the 2021 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,347 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,347 |
| Year-Round High | $28,625 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,223 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.19% |
Prices have softened 10.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,508 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the exceptional handling, powerful performance, luxurious interior, fuel economy, and trunk space. The 3 Series also fits buyers who want a luxury sedan with a sporty reputation but more comfort and convenience than earlier versions.
On the trade-off side, the expert notes say the car is competent but unremarkable, and advanced safety features are not standard.
With 33.4% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its strong performance, luxurious interior, and fuel economy. It also suggests you can count on the 3 Series for a well-rounded ownership experience, especially if you value driving enjoyment and refinement.
The expert notes reinforce that sense of solidity, describing the chassis as impressively solid and comfortable on the highway. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that ownership costs and condition can vary a lot depending on how the car was equipped and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
At 73.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned car. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the car’s electronics or driver-assist systems were repaired after damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard Sport Line trim package comes with 18-inch wheels, while the optional M Sport trim package adds M 19-inch wheels and blue-painted brake calipers. The interior uses synthetic Sensatec as standard, and leather upholstery is optional, so base cars may feel less upscale than you expect.
- Powertrain: The 330i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The 330e plug-in hybrid combines that engine with electric assist for 288 hp and 310 lb-ft, while the M340i uses a turbo inline-six with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning are standard. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go capability, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance, while the lower-level Driving Assistant Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The standard system includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. Gasoline models get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the 330e only gets CarPlay; Live Cockpit Professional adds a digital instrument cluster and navigation, and a head-up display is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 330i is rated at 30 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 28 mpg combined with xDrive. The 330e plug-in hybrid is rated for 23 miles of electric range with rear-wheel drive or 20 miles with xDrive, plus 75 MPGe or 67 MPGe in electric mode.
Which 2021 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the entry point and the best-value choice for most shoppers because it delivers the core 3 Series experience with the 255-horsepower turbo four, strong fuel economy, and the standard infotainment setup. If you want the classic balance of performance and everyday usability without stretching the budget, this is the trim to start with.
- 330e: This is the pick if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and the ability to drive on electric power for short trips. It suits you best if you can plug in regularly and want a more efficiency-minded 3 Series, but the expert notes say the powertrain transitions can feel clunky and the hybrid can return worse gas mileage than the 330i if you do not charge it often.
- M340i: This is the performance-focused choice, with the turbo inline-six and the quickest acceleration in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the strongest straight-line performance and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that advanced driver-assist features are not standard, so you may need to step up to the relevant package to get them.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,508 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,347, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $25,347 sits slightly below last year's $28,223.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car more attractive to used buyers but less favorable for current owners hoping for strong near-term resale. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower price point than a year ago, which can help cushion future depreciation.
For a future seller, the key question is whether the car’s condition and equipment help it stand out from the many listings available. Well-kept examples with desirable options should hold buyer interest better than neglected or lightly equipped ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series got a “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with top “Good” scores in all crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want more, the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go functionality, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance.
A key caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, and the optional Active Driving Assistant Professional system scored lower than the base system in vehicle-to-pedestrian front-crash prevention.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds the 330e plug-in hybrid to the lineup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $24,015, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,347 average.
- It emphasizes driving enjoyment and performance-first appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,551, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,347 average.
- It standardizes Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with navigation.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the primary path to consider. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer standard equipment and are willing to pay more.
