Summary

Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sports sedan that still leans into the formula that made the nameplate famous. It is described as the original and best luxury sports sedan, and its appeal comes from a blend of fun-to-drive character, multiple powertrain options, and easy-to-use technology. BMW also gives every 3 Series the Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with navigation this year, which helps keep the cabin feeling current without changing the car’s basic personality.
At the same time, the 2022 model is presented as largely familiar, with BMW making only minor changes to the standard and optional equipment lists. That conservative approach may appeal to buyers who want a proven sedan rather than a dramatic reinvention, but it also means the car does not address every weakness. A manual transmission is not available, advanced safety features are not standard, and the stereo is lacking. Even so, the 2022 BMW 3 Series remains distinctive because it combines everyday usability with the kind of driving enjoyment that continues to define the segment.

The features on this series BMW are phenomenal. Looks like it will hug the ground in those tight turns. The body style is amazing on this car. Perfect for your everyday car or just your Sunday outings. Only thing it's missing Is me behind the wheel. I wouldn't really compare it to another series. It's in a class of it's own. Awesome car!!

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.5/5 user rating, and our experts give it an 8.67/10 rating.
The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its sporty performance, great handling, and stylish design. Many also like the fuel efficiency and quick acceleration.
The trade-offs are familiar: the manual transmission is not available, advanced safety features are not standard, and the stereo is lacking.
If you want a luxury sports sedan that still prioritizes driving enjoyment and everyday usability, this model year fits that brief well. It also keeps the cabin feeling current with standard digital instrumentation and navigation.
Good and great deals account for 28.3% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as sporty, efficient, and enjoyable to live with, and those themes usually point to a car people feel good about keeping. The expert evaluation also emphasizes strong performance and a well-sorted driving experience, which supports confidence in day-to-day ownership.
BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce some early ownership friction.
That said, used buyers should still watch for long-term wear items and verify maintenance history carefully, especially given reports of oil leak concerns and high maintenance costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report on any car you’re considering, even if it looks clean on paper. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a premium sports sedan, where maintenance and repair costs can add up quickly. Focus on condition, service records, and whether the car has the equipment you want, since some desirable features were optional.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3. The base setup is more conservative on equipment, while higher trims add more performance and visual distinction.
- Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The 330e adds plug-in hybrid capability with an estimated 23 miles of electric driving range.
- Safety package: Active Guard is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert require the optional Driving Assistance package, while lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, and extended traffic jam capability come with the Driving Assistance Professional package.
- Infotainment: Every 3 Series gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and BMW’s iDrive 7.0 interface. Connected Package Pro is standard, and the system also includes BMW Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 24.9 mpg on the evaluation route and is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the entry point if you want the core 3 Series experience with the standard digital cockpit, navigation, and the brand’s familiar sporty character without stepping up to the pricier performance models.
- 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the estimated 23 miles of electric driving range, which adds efficiency-minded flexibility to the lineup.
- M340i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers who care most about driving enjoyment. It adds the turbocharged inline-six, mild-hybrid tech, and the strongest all-around performance balance in the range.
- M3: Pick this only if you want the highest-performance version and are willing to pay for it.
For safety equipment, remember that the standard package is limited, and blind-spot monitoring plus rear cross-traffic alert require the optional Driving Assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,795 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.45% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,718.46, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $28,725 sits slightly below last year's $31,037.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future resale if you buy at the right number. If you pay close to the current average, you may have less room for appreciation in value retention later. On the other hand, a well-bought example can still hold appeal because the 3 Series remains a desirable sports sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, including rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety package includes Active Guard, with forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, you need the optional Driving Assistance package. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, extended traffic jam assistance, and Emergency Stop Assistant.
One important caveat is that the IIHS award applies only to models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the standard digital cockpit and navigation while staying close to the 3 Series formula buyers expect.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,734, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,725 average.
- It offers sporty dynamics and strong technology with a more traditional current-generation feel.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $34,802, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,725 average.
- It adds a refresh with sleeker styling, an updated cockpit, and more technology.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, performance, and modern features, the 2022 is the smart default. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want the newer look and updates, the 2023 is worth the premium.
