CarGurus Analysis: 2021 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,525 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,801.00, 32.5% of 2021 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW 3 Series 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
74.2% of 2021 BMW 3 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sedan that still carries BMW’s long-running reputation for sporty driving dynamics and precise engineering, even as the current generation leans more toward comfort and convenience than earlier versions. That balance gives it broad appeal: it feels more traditional as a luxury car, but it still retains the handling character that helped define the nameplate. BMW’s own test-drive summary calls it competent but unremarkable, which suggests a car that does its job well without trying to be flashy.
For 2021, the biggest change was the addition of the 330e plug-in hybrid model to the lineup. BMW also offered 330i and M340i versions, giving shoppers a range of choices within the same sedan family. The 2021 BMW 3 Series is also notable for its technology, and its strengths include great handling and impressive technology. One limitation is that advanced safety features are not standard, so buyers who want a fuller safety package may need to look carefully at equipment levels.

Extremely responsive car with Good fuel economy. Driving assist system is extremely helpful as well. The audio is somewhat lacking (speakers) but NOT a deterrent to the car at all.

The car is beautiful, but I couldn’t buy it because it was making noises when I drove it. I can’t buy a car that I need to bring to the shop as soon as I get it.

If you find a listing below $25,741.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW 3 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the exceptional handling, powerful performance, luxurious interior, and safety features, and many also like the fuel economy and trunk space. The main trade-offs are concerns about the audio system and mechanical noises, while the expert review notes that the car is more comfort- and convenience-focused than earlier 3 Series models and can feel less engaging than its reputation suggests.
That makes it a strong fit if you want a luxury sedan with broad appeal, especially if you value a polished daily driver over a more aggressive sports-sedan feel.
With 28.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire strong confidence, with praise centered on long-term enjoyment, strong performance, and the kind of ownership experience people feel good about recommending. The expert drive notes also emphasize the sedan’s solid engineering and the sense of solidity it delivers on the road.
BMW’s standard warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles, with four years of free roadside assistance, which helps early ownership costs. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about how well the car was maintained and optioned.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or has higher mileage. Pay close attention to bodywork quality, panel alignment, tire wear, brake condition, and any signs that optional equipment may not be functioning as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard Sport Line trim package comes with 18-inch wheels, while the optional M Sport package adds M 19-inch wheels and blue-painted brake calipers. The interior uses synthetic Sensatec as standard, and leather upholstery is optional, so base cars can feel less upscale than you might expect.
- Powertrain: The 330i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The 330e plug-in hybrid combines that engine with electric assist for 288 hp and 310 lb-ft, while the M340i uses a turbo inline-six with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. All versions use an eight-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive available.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning are standard. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go capability, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance. A lower-level Driving Assistant Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The standard system includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. Gasoline models get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the 330e only gets CarPlay. Live Cockpit Professional adds a digital instrument cluster and navigation, and a head-up display is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 330i is rated at 30 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 28 mpg combined with xDrive. The M340i is rated at 26 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 25 mpg combined with xDrive. The 330e plug-in hybrid is rated for 23 miles of electric range with rear-wheel drive or 20 miles with xDrive, plus 75 MPGe or 67 MPGe in electric mode.
Which 2021 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the core 3 Series experience without stretching into pricier territory. You still get the 2.0-liter turbo four, strong efficiency, and the balanced chassis that defines the car.
- 330e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the added electric driving range, but only if you can plug in regularly. It suits you best if commuting efficiency matters more than outright simplicity.
- M340i: This is the performance pick, with the turbo inline-six and the quickest acceleration in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the most power and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is not fully standard, so check carefully for the driver-assistance equipment you want before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,524 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,741.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $25,734 sits slightly below last year's $28,178.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment, since the model has already given back some value from last year’s level.
Well-equipped examples with desirable features should hold up better than stripped cars, especially if they have clean history and strong maintenance records. If you buy carefully now, you can improve your odds of getting a stronger return later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series got a “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with top “Good” scores in all crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW’s standard driver-assistance features are limited to forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want more, the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go capability, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance. A lower-level Driving Assistant Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and a parking-assist package with a 360-degree camera system and automated parking aid is also available.
One caveat is that the optional Active Driving Assistant Professional system scored lower than the base system in vehicle-to-pedestrian front-crash prevention, so you should verify exactly which safety equipment is on the car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- BMW’s 2021 update adds the 330e plug-in hybrid to the lineup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $24,036, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,734 average.
- It emphasizes engaging driving with comfort and a powerful engine.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,725, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,734 average.
- Every 3 Series gets digital instrumentation with navigation.
The bottom line: the 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the newest of these three at a softer price than last year. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2020 is the value play; if you want a slightly newer-feeling feature set and don’t mind paying more, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
