Used 2020 Volvo XC90 for Sale nearNewark, NJ

How much does the 2020 Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices have softened 14.85% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,113 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used XC90s to compare.

Is the 2020 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Volvo XC90 earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Owners consistently praise the XC90’s stylish design, comfortable driving experience, spacious interior, and strong safety reputation. The overview also points to its premium feel and family-friendly three-row layout, which makes it a strong fit if you want something upscale and practical.

The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and an underwhelming base engine, so you should not expect quick acceleration to be part of the appeal.

With 35.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is enough market activity to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, safety, and features that make it easy to live with over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Volvo’s long-running focus on safety and describes the XC90 as a family shuttle built on decades of safety research.

The cost-effectiveness notes add that it comes with 3 years or 36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership friction.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained and cared for properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title percentage does not replace a full records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear items, electronics, and evidence of uneven use. Pay close attention to trim-specific equipment, since the XC90’s appeal depends heavily on the features and materials you get.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model is front-wheel drive and uses the smaller T5 engine, while higher trims bring better interior materials, more tech, and all-wheel drive.
• Powertrain: The XC90 uses turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder powertrains, with the T5 making 250 horsepower and the T6 adding a supercharger for 316 horsepower; the T8 plug-in hybrid is also part of the lineup.
• Safety package: Volvo Pilot Assist is standard and combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist; standard safety equipment also includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a driver-attention monitor, blind-spot monitoring, and traffic-sign recognition.
• Infotainment: The portrait-oriented touchscreen is high-resolution and easy to use, but onboard apps can be slow to load.
• Fuel efficiency: The T6 AWD is rated at 18 mpg city, 26 highway, and 21 combined, while the T5 AWD is rated at 20/27/23; the T8 plug-in hybrid can travel up to 18 gas-free miles and is rated at 27 mpg combined once the battery depletes.

Which 2020 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point, but the base setup is the least compelling because it pairs the front-wheel-drive layout with the smaller T5 engine. It makes sense only if you are focused on getting into the XC90 at the lowest price.
• R-Design: This trim adds a sportier visual treatment, blacked-out exterior details, and available premium audio, while keeping the XC90’s core comfort and safety strengths intact. It is the best fit if you want the most distinctive look and a richer cabin feel.
• Inscription: This is the trim to target if you care most about luxury touches, since it can bring matte wood trim and wool fabric seats. It is the best-value choice for shoppers who want the XC90’s upscale character without chasing the most expensive configuration.

Volvo Pilot Assist and the core safety suite are standard, so even lower trims still give you a strong safety foundation.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volvo XC90?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,113 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.85% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $22,657, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $22,657 sits slightly below last year's $26,609.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the current average or below it, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to the model’s earlier pricing. Strong condition and desirable equipment should matter more when it comes time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2020 Volvo XC90 earns Top Safety Pick from IIHS and top scores from NHTSA.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo Pilot Assist comes standard, and it combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist. Standard safety equipment also includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a driver-attention monitor, blind-spot monitoring, and traffic-sign recognition.

The main caveat is that the IIHS headlight test keeps it from earning the Top Safety Pick+ designation.

Should I buy a 2020 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.85% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 keeps Volvo’s safety-first family-SUV formula intact with standard Pilot Assist and top-tier safety scores.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $26,341, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $22,657 average.
• It adds Care Key and newly standard tech features.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices are lower and the safety-and-comfort formula is already well established. If you are willing to pay more for a slightly newer version with a few added convenience features, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path.
