How much does the 2020 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 11.59% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 461 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.0/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its spacious cabin, quiet feel, and strong value for the money, and they also call out its impressive fuel efficiency and comfortable, well-equipped character. The Passat’s practical, roomy layout fits buyers who want a family sedan with a lot of interior space and easy day-to-day usability.

The trade-offs are clear: the technology feels dated, and the ride quality can be uneven. Even so, if you want a roomy, value-focused sedan rather than a flashy one, the Passat’s strengths line up well with that mission.

Good and great deals account for 33.0% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, comfortable, and easy to live with over time, with many drivers highlighting its trouble-free character and strong value. The expert review also emphasizes the Passat’s simple powertrain and predictable behavior, which can make long-term ownership feel straightforward.

Volkswagen also includes the first two maintenance visits for free, which helps reduce early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical complexity and more about living with an older design that already feels behind the curve.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?

At 69.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because the Passat’s value proposition depends so much on condition, you’ll want to focus on how well the car has been maintained and whether its ride, electronics, and safety systems are working as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S is the simplest version, while the SE is easy to recommend for its blend of value and equipment. The R-Line adds a sportier look, and the SEL brings more convenience and premium touches, including navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking steering assist, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights.
• Powertrain: Every 2020 Passat uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is tuned for simplicity and everyday drivability rather than strong acceleration.
• Safety package: Every version includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 6.3 inches, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, a CD player, and Bluetooth. The latest VW infotainment system and Digital Cockpit are not included.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the Passat averaged 26 mpg on a testing loop and notes an EPA combined rating of 27 mpg.

Which 2020 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: Passat S, Passat SE, R-Line, SEL.

Here's the short version:

• Passat S: This is the least expensive way into the Passat, and it gives you the core space, value, and safety equipment without extra frills. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the simplest setup.
• Passat SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds a strong mix of equipment and usefulness without pushing the price too high. It also brings adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, making it the trim most buyers should start with.
• R-Line: Choose this if you want the sportier appearance and the specific test-car setup described in the review. It is more about style and feel than major capability gains.
• SEL: This is the most feature-rich version, adding navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking steering assist, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights. It suits you if you want the most convenience and premium equipment the Passat offers.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but SE and SEL add meaningful extra driver-assistance and convenience features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, especially if you’re willing to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 461 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,059, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $14,059 sits slightly below last year's $15,901.

That decline suggests the Passat has softened in the used market, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A lower current average price can make it easier to attract shoppers, but it also means you may need to price competitively to move the car.

The Passat’s value story still helps support resale because it offers a lot of space and practicality for the money. If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, those traits can help it stand out among budget-minded sedan shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 update refreshed the Passat without changing its roomy, value-focused formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $14,483, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $14,059 average.
• Adaptive cruise control becomes standard across the lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the better value right now, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong space, safety, and satisfaction. If you want a slightly newer version with standard adaptive cruise control and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is worth a look.
