Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Tundra 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Tundra stands out most for its reputation for reliability. The test-drive data describes it as practically a guarantee that you’ll never need to buy another one ever again, and it says the truck should prove utterly bulletproof in terms of reliability. That same source also makes clear that this durability comes with tradeoffs, calling the Tundra uncompetitive in numerous ways.
Even so, the 2020 Toyota Tundra has a few appealing strengths. It is described as spacious, and its stereo is called impressive. At the same time, buyers should be aware of its drawbacks: poor fuel economy, a noisy cabin, and poor safety ratings. The user review summary echoes the truck’s dependable character and roomy interior, while also noting that some drivers dislike its gas mileage and outdated interior design compared with competitors.

I purchased this truck new and overall the value is good but I have had some challenges. My a/c has a gremlin in it sometimes it works sometimes works but not at the level it was designed for. This truck rides like a truck so if you are looking for a nice this isn't the truck for you. I have the crew cab and the space inside is fantastic. I also like having the V8 engine. Overall it is a good buy but the interior is definitely dated. I need a key to start where others only need press a button. :-)

Toyota also includes free scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about living with the truck’s age-related compromises, especially fuel economy and overall refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tundra?
At 64.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, frame condition, and signs of prior repair quality. Because the truck’s safety record is a weak point, it also makes sense to focus on whether the specific listing has been maintained well and whether any visible wear lines up with the mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Toyota sells the 2020 Tundra in SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum, and 1794 Edition trim. The higher you climb on this trim-level ladder, the fancier and plusher a Tundra gets. The TRD Pro stands apart with its exclusive Army Green paint, black 18-inch forged aluminum wheels, black leather with red stitching, and red TRD Pro embroidery, while the interior overall is described as aging well but covered in hard plastic at higher price levels.
- Powertrain: All 2020 Toyota Tundras have a 5.7-liter V8 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It makes 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, and the truck can tow up to 10,200 pounds and carry up to 1,730 lbs. of payload in the right configuration. The TRD Pro includes standard 4WD, while 4WD is optional on all but that trim.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and you can also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Every Tundra includes a free year of Safety Connect services, which provides automatic collision notification and SOS emergency calling. The TRD Pro does not add a unique safety suite, so the main safety equipment story is about the standard package rather than trim-specific upgrades.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch display is standard in lower trim levels, while more expensive versions upgrade to an 8-inch screen. All trims include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, USB media and charging ports, and free trial subscriptions to safety-related and WiFi connected services. The TRD Pro adds dynamic navigation, dynamic voice recognition, dynamic point-of-interest search, a full menu of connected services, and a 12-speaker JBL premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says a Tundra 4WD gets 13 mpg in the city, 17 on the highway, and 14 in combined driving. The expert review also says gas mileage is unimpressive, and it averaged 14.3 mpg during a week of driving.
Which 2020 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Tundra is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum, 1794 Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the lowest starting price and care more about basic truck capability than extra comfort or tech.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more balanced mix of equipment without pushing you into the pricier luxury-oriented trims.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for a nicer overall cabin and feature set.
- TRD Pro: This is the off-road-focused choice, with standard 4WD, TRD-tuned Fox shocks, BBS forged aluminum wheels, a skid plate, and a dual exhaust system.
- Platinum: Pick this if you want a more premium Tundra experience and are willing to pay for added comfort and polish.
- 1794 Edition: This is the most style- and comfort-oriented trim, aimed at buyers who want a more distinctive, upscale truck.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tundra?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,636 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.18% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $35,077, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Tundra's resale value?
The current average of $36,672 sits slightly below last year's $37,876.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the truck for a while. For a future seller, the softer current pricing means there may be less immediate upside than before, but the truck’s reputation still supports demand.
Because the Tundra is known for holding its value over time, depreciation may remain more controlled than average if you maintain it well and keep mileage reasonable. Strong condition and a clean history should matter a lot when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tundra safe?
The 2020 Toyota Tundra earns Good ratings from IIHS in some tests, but it also gets Marginal and Poor results in small-overlap frontal testing, and its headlights are rated Marginal. It earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side-impact protection from NHTSA.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and every Tundra includes a free year of Safety Connect services with automatic collision notification and SOS emergency calling. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also available.
The main caveat is that the crash-test results are uneven, so safety-conscious used buyers should pay close attention to the truck’s equipment level and overall condition.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.18% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 keeps the Tundra’s durable V8 formula while adding modern infotainment and standard safety tech.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $34,507, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $36,672 average.
- It sticks with a proven, no-nonsense truck formula.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $38,887, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $36,672 average.
- It keeps the old-school Tundra formula relevant with modern tech and safety updates.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and proven durability, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the better value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer example.
