CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 443 currently listed for sale near Atlanta, GA and an average price of $26,723, 27.1% of 2020 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Tacoma 4.32 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
82.2% of 2020 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma stands out as the country’s most popular midsize pickup truck, and it remains the best-selling midsize truck in the US. Its appeal comes from the combination of capability, size, and dependable off-road features that keep buyers coming back, even though it is described as loud, slow, and defiantly old-fashioned. For 2020, it also receives few but important design and technology updates to help move the truck into more modern territory.
Those updates matter because the Tacoma’s strengths are not limited to rugged image alone. The truck is noted for easy-to-use technology and standard advanced safety features, which make it more approachable than its reputation might suggest. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the interior materials feel cheap, and the base engine is underwhelming. Even so, the 2020 Tacoma’s mix of popularity, off-road credibility, and added tech gives it a distinctive place among midsize pickups.

The Toyota Tacoma TRD off road model is the best in its class. It’s a little more expensive than other models in its class but it’s definitely worth it. The performance, looks, interior features and so on are just incomparable. I’ve owned this truck for 10 days and have had multiple offers for it already. It was parked beside a new Chevrolet Colorado and new Ford Ranger last weekend and I hate to tell the owners but it made them look really bad. Toyota Rules in all aspects. It’s not just my opinion it’s been the worlds opinion for years.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.32/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviewers consistently describe it as reliable and dependable, and the truck’s reputation for being a practical, trouble-free companion comes through clearly in owner feedback. The expert review also emphasizes its dependable off-road features and the sense that it is built for long-term use.
If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is paying too much for a truck that may have seen hard use without getting the maintenance it deserves.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?
At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off pavement or for towing. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin and bed, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the trim level you expect. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a little more for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Tacoma’s trims range from the more basic SR and SR5 to the more equipped Limited and the off-road-focused TRD Pro. The base models are simpler inside, while higher trims add more visual polish and capability-oriented hardware.
- Powertrain: The 2.7-liter four-cylinder is the base engine, while the 3.5-liter V6 is optional on SR and SR5 and standard on the rest. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most trims, with four-wheel drive standard on TRD Pro and optional elsewhere.
- Safety package: A standard suite of driver assists includes adaptive cruise control, forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, with an 8-inch unit available. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are standard, and wireless phone charging and onboard Wi-Fi are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The inline-four returns 20 mpg city, 23 highway, and 21 combined, while the V6 returns 18 city, 22 highway, and 20 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the most basic setup. It makes sense if you mainly want Tacoma capability and don’t need extra comfort or off-road hardware.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it opens the door to the stronger V6 while staying relatively affordable. It’s the trim to target if you want a balanced mix of everyday usability and Tacoma toughness.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the smart pick if you want the Tacoma’s off-road personality without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It adds the kind of hardware and capability that make the truck feel more specialized.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-oriented Tacoma with a little more style and equipment than the lower trims. It’s the right middle ground if you care more about daily driving than trail hardware.
- Limited: This is the comfort-leaning choice, with the most upscale feel in the lineup. It suits you best if you want a Tacoma but prefer a more polished, less rugged presentation.
- TRD Pro: This is the trim for maximum off-road intent, with the most aggressive hardware and the strongest visual identity. It’s the one to buy if trail use is your priority and you want the most capable factory setup.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s-market discount.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,209 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $29,322, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $30,949 sits slightly below last year's $31,553.
That softer pricing suggests the Tacoma is holding value reasonably well, but not so tightly that you should expect prices to keep climbing. For a future seller, that means condition and equipment will matter a lot: cleaner trucks with desirable trims and features should be easier to move. The current market also shows enough inventory that buyers can compare options, which can put pressure on weaker listings.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.32/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating and four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
A standard safety suite includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional, so you’ll want to confirm whether a used listing has those extras if they matter to you. The Tacoma’s lower Acceptable result in the front passenger small-overlap test is the main caveat to keep in mind.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.32/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds important design and technology updates while keeping the Tacoma’s rugged appeal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $29,529, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $30,949 average.
- It feels like a faithful, durable truck with strong character.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,329, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $30,949 average.
- It adds two special editions and standard dual-zone climate control on V6 models.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, updates, and broad availability, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense only if its added features or special editions are worth the premium to you.
