CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Prius Prime
overall

Summary
With 244 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,404, 32.0% of 2020 Toyota Prius Primes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
70.9% of 2020 Prius Prime models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as a plug-in hybrid built around efficiency and value. The test-drive summary calls it the most efficient plug-in hybrid on sale, and it also highlights Toyota’s long experience with hybrid technology. For shoppers focused on saving money on gas, that combination makes the Prius Prime especially appealing.
It is not a car that wins on excitement, though. The listed drawbacks include sluggish performance and outdated technology, so the Prius Prime’s strengths are clearly centered on economy rather than speed or modern flair. Owner feedback reinforces that tradeoff, with praise for its fuel economy and useful features such as adaptive cruise control, alongside complaints about the infotainment system and limited cargo space.

Surprising... both good and bad. Starting off this car has a ton of features like a heads up display, JBL sound, and a giant touch screen. On the surface all this is pretty cool, but in practice the infotainment system is really awkward and difficult to use. It makes poor use of the space. Generally this Prius has less storage space than our Previous generation of Prius. The good surprises came from unexpected places. The speed and acceleration were much improved. It feels quick and it has a much more quiet ride. They did a good job on insulation . Overall it feels like a good car but quirky.

The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out sluggish performance and outdated technology, and owner feedback echoes complaints about the infotainment system and limited cargo space. If you want a plug-in hybrid that prioritizes efficiency and value over excitement, this fits that use case well.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, alignment, and interior condition. Because the model’s appeal centers on efficiency and value, you’ll want to make sure any savings on price aren’t offset by prior damage or neglected maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE misses the larger touchscreen, while the XLE and Limited add a more upscale equipment mix. The midgrade XLE is the best-value choice because it adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup delivers strong efficiency, with 55 mpg city, 53 highway, and 54 combined after the battery is depleted, plus 133 MPGe in electric mode. It is quiet and seamless, but it is also slow.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 11.6 inches and is standard on the XLE and Limited, but it is unavailable on the base LE. Wireless charging is included on the XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The Prius Prime is rated at 55 mpg city, 53 highway, 54 combined, and 133 MPGe in electric mode.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, but it skips the larger touchscreen found higher up the range. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live with fewer convenience features.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim. It adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry, making it the smartest pick for most shoppers.
- Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, and it adds blind-spot monitoring on top of the higher-trim equipment. Choose it if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them.
Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and compare listings closely.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 251 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.68% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 70.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,499, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $23,359 sits slightly above last year's $22,104.
That upward move suggests the market still values this model’s efficiency and hybrid reputation. For a future seller, that can help support pricing if your car is clean, well maintained, and documented.
The year-round range also matters: if you buy near the low end and keep the car in strong condition, you give yourself a better chance of preserving value later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
The Prius Prime itself was not crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but the closely related Prius earned five-star overall ratings from NHTSA and a 2019 Top Safety Pick from IIHS. In NHTSA testing, it received four-star ratings for both driver and passenger in a head-on frontal crash and two-star ratings in the pole test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and Toyota Safety Sense features. Three years of Toyota Safety Connect also come standard, and blind-spot monitoring is limited to the Limited trim.
The main caveat is that the related Prius showed weaker results in the pole test and an Acceptable rating in the passenger-side small front overlap test, so you should pay attention to crash-history and trim-level equipment when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.68% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model adds a center rear seat and keeps the focus on maximum efficiency.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $23,163, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $23,359 average.
- It adds a good list of standard equipment and features while keeping strong range and efficiency.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest efficiency-focused value and can live with dated tech, the 2020 is the safer buy. If you’re price-sensitive and want a slightly newer alternative with a similar mission, the 2021 is worth a look.
