CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Highlander
overall

Summary
With 263 currently listed for sale near Dayton, OH and an average price of $29,212.00, 30.4% of 2020 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Highlander 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
99.6% of 2020 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Highlander stands out by putting comfort ahead of flash. It was redesigned for 2020, and the result is a midsize three-row SUV that emphasizes silent operation, a soft ride, and a cosseting interior. The Highlander is described as the most comfortable midsize SUV, and its upper trims are said to feel and drive just like a Lexus, without the upcharge. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a family SUV that feels calm and upscale rather than exciting.
It also brings standard advanced safety features and a spacious cabin, two qualities that matter a lot in this segment. At the same time, the Highlander is not trying to win over drivers who value sharp responses or standout styling. Its handling is described as poor, and its styling as uninspired, so its strengths are clearly in comfort, space, and an easygoing character rather than driving enjoyment or visual drama.

It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

The ride was smooth, the Highlander is quick and very quiet. I loved many of the features it had, like the posted speed limit on the instrument cluster. What really disappointed me was the passenger seat comfort. The seat bottom only adjusts fron-to-rear, not up or down so I wasn’t as comfortable in it as I was the Hyundai Palisade or the Kia Telluride. It’s still a really good vehicle.

If you find a listing below $26,985.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, advanced features, and spacious interior, and many also highlight its safety features and family-friendly practicality. The trade-offs are front-seat comfort and interior material quality, which some reviewers say can feel shallow or cheap.
That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a three-row SUV that prioritizes comfort, space, and a calm driving experience over flash or excitement. For shoppers who want an easygoing family hauler, that mission makes sense.
With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market opportunity to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as dependable, with a smooth ride and a family-friendly character that many buyers can count on over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its quiet operation, muted controls, and Lexus-like refinement, which supports the sense that it’s built for steady everyday use.
Toyota includes two years of maintenance and roadside assistance, which adds some ownership reassurance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its comfort and refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and interior condition. Because this model’s appeal is tied so closely to comfort and refinement, you’ll want to pay close attention to seat condition, cabin wear, and whether the vehicle still feels quiet and composed on the road.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Every trim except the base L has projector-beam LED headlights and fog lights, while prettier LED running lamps are reserved for the Limited and Platinum. Big 20-inch wheels are also limited to the top two trims, and the cabin quality improves as you move up the range.
- Powertrain: The Highlander uses a 3.5-liter V6 with either FWD or AWD, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It delivers brisk acceleration, smooth power delivery, and very good fuel economy for a large SUV.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration come standard. The system uses an 8-inch touchscreen, while a 12.3-inch screen is optional on Limited and standard on Platinum; the larger display still keeps climate and vehicle info visible at all times.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. AWD drops to 20/27/23.
Which 2020 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Highlander’s core comfort, space, and standard safety equipment at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the model’s main strengths without paying for extra luxury touches.
- LE: This is the best-value trim. The cost-effectiveness data calls it the best value in the low $40,000 range, making it the sweet spot if you want a strong mix of equipment and price.
- XLE: This trim adds more comfort and convenience while staying below the luxury-focused upper trims. It’s the right step up if you want a more polished family SUV without going all the way to the top.
- Limited: This trim brings a more upscale cabin and more premium-feeling features, and the expert evaluation notes that it feels and drives like a Lexus without the upcharge. It suits you if comfort and refinement matter most.
- Platinum: This is the most luxurious version, with the most upscale presentation and the largest standard touchscreen. Choose it if you want the most premium Highlander experience.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,122 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.36% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,985.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $27,779 sits slightly below last year's $29,351.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper future appreciation if you plan to sell later. Even so, a model with broad family appeal, strong comfort, and standard safety equipment tends to stay relevant with shoppers looking for a practical three-row SUV.
Because the Highlander’s reputation is built on comfort and satisfaction rather than flash, it should continue to attract steady demand from used buyers. That kind of demand helps support resale value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A driver’s knee airbag and a special cushion airbag for the front passenger are also standard.
Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional, so you’ll want to confirm whether a specific used listing has those extras.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 redesign emphasizes comfort, quietness, and a more premium-feeling cabin.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $29,969, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,779 average.
- Toyota adds more standard safety-feature technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a well-rounded comfort-first package. If you’re willing to pay more for added standard safety technology, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path.
