CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 2,473 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,716, 29.4% of 2020 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Corolla 4.69 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Corolla stands out by adding style and a bit of enjoyment to a nameplate long associated with affordability, reliability, efficiency, and practicality. It remains a compact sedan that is cheap to buy, dependable, thrifty with fuel, and roomy enough for a frugal family, but this redesigned version brings a more engaging personality than the Corolla has traditionally been known for.
It also offers a manual transmission, premium interior materials, and standard advanced safety features, which help it feel more appealing than a basic commuter car. Owners echo many of those strengths, praising its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value. The main drawback is comfort: the seats are described as uncomfortable, and some owners also mention that the back legroom is a bit tight and that sound insulation could be better on longer drives.

I bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE and owned it for about a year and a half. It rides smooth, has great safety features, and is amazing with gas mileage. I was averaging a combined 36.7mpg everywhere I went. I’ve never owned a vehicle so new, so getting used to the fancy new cruise control that matches the speed of the vehicle in front of you took some getting used to. The lane assist was a really cool feature! However, I live in the desert of New Mexico, so if the sun hits the road just right, it’ll bounce off the painted stripes and make it unrecognizable to the sensors. Other than that, it’s a great feature! For a compact car, it has enough space for a single person or a family of two or three. Spacious cargo bay! The leg room is a little tight in the back, especially if the driver or passenger scoots back a little. That being said, I was hoping the seats would be a little more comfy being a 2020 model. Kinda stiff and not super comfortable for 1hr+ rides. Not bad, but could be better. All in all, this is a great car with great safety features that I would recommend to anyone, even a new driver thanks to the warning systems aboard! Love it.

It is a manual transmission. I was searching for the S PLUS model but since they were discontinued, I saw that this model was similar (smart key/push button starter) That is a plus, you will never lock your car with the keys inside. Mainly (the manual Transmission) I have been driving manual transmission for over 30 years, I wish they would never stop making them. I am very impressed with Corollas because of there reliability. The prevoius 3 vehicles all have been Corollas Manual Transmission, the last one was a 2015 S PLUS model I purchased in February 2018 with 54K miles on it. It currently has 391K and I never had a break down or been stranded, not even the clutch, all Ive done was change the oil every 5K, tires, battery, breaks, shocks and struts when needed. Corolla is an excellent reliable vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,733 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,781 |
| Year-Round High | $16,733 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,705 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.17% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 2,452 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare on price, trim, and condition.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.69/5, and the expert rating is 7/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise the Corolla’s excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value. For you, that means this is a compact sedan that fits the practical commuter role while feeling more polished and more engaging than the typical economy-car formula.
The main trade-offs are comfort-related: the seats can be uncomfortable, the back legroom is a bit tight, and sound insulation could be better on longer drives. Even so, if you want a frugal family car or daily driver with a more appealing personality, the Corolla makes a strong case for itself.
Only 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the better examples may not linger long.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliable performance, and the broader praise for fuel economy and value suggests a car that many buyers feel confident living with over time. The expert review also describes it as dependable and thrifty with fuel, which reinforces the Corolla’s reputation as a low-drama daily driver.
Toyota’s safety and driver-assistance package is standard across the lineup, which can help reduce ownership stress by adding confidence in everyday driving. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been worn down by heavy commuting or neglected comfort-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. After that, prioritize a close inspection of the seats, cabin noise, and overall interior condition, since comfort complaints show up repeatedly in owner feedback. It also makes sense to compare trims carefully, because some desirable features are not standard on every version.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L, LE, and XLE focus on the more basic 1.8-liter setup, while SE and XSE add a more attractive look, 18-inch wheels, and a more premium-feeling cabin. If you want the best-value balance of style and equipment, the SE is the trim to focus on.
- Powertrain: The L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 139 horsepower, while SE and XSE get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE also offers a 6-speed manual, and the more powerful setup is the one to choose if you want the Corolla to feel more responsive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, so lower trims may leave you wanting more.
- Infotainment: The Corolla uses Entune 3.0 with a 7-inch screen on standard versions and an 8-inch display on LE and higher. Apple CarPlay is included, Android Auto is not, and wireless device charging is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid LE is rated at 52 mpg combined, while the 2.0-liter gas setup is rated at 31 mpg city, 38 highway, and 34 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the most basic entry point, and it keeps the Corolla affordable while still giving you the core safety and infotainment setup. Choose it if your priority is the lowest purchase price and you do not need extra comfort or style features.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability, including the larger 8-inch display. It is the trim to target if you want a sensible balance of price and equipment.
- XLE: This trim leans more toward comfort and convenience, and it is the better pick if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla without moving into the sportier models.
- SE: This is the sweet spot if you want the Corolla’s more engaging personality. It adds the stronger 2.0-liter engine, sportier styling, and the available manual transmission, making it the most appealing choice for many buyers.
- XSE: This is the most fully featured gas model, with the strongest mix of style and equipment. It suits you best if you want the most polished Corolla experience and are willing to pay more for it.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, and optional on LE and SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,452 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,781, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $16,733 sits slightly above last year's $16,705.
That small increase suggests the Corolla is holding value rather than sliding sharply, which is a good sign if you plan to sell later. Stable pricing also points to steady buyer interest, especially for a model with a reputation for efficiency and practicality.
For you as a future seller, the best resale prospects will likely come from well-kept examples with clean history reports and desirable equipment. Cars that present well and have the stronger trim or feature mix should be easier to market when it is time to move on.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2020 Corolla earns a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist works with adaptive cruise control to help keep the car centered in its lane, and the system is generally described as refined and accurate.
There are a couple of caveats to keep in mind. Blind-spot monitoring is standard only on XLE and XSE, optional on LE and SE, and it does not include rear cross-traffic alert. The lane-departure warning also uses an aural alert that may be more irritating than helpful for some drivers.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a more stylish, more engaging personality than earlier Corolla versions.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,033, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,733 average.
- It adds the Apex Edition with a track-tuned suspension and lowered ride height.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because pricing is stable and owner satisfaction is strong. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer model and want the Apex Edition’s extra sportiness, the 2021 is the better fit.
