CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 2,367 currently listed for sale and an average price of $35,790.00, 31.2% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
69.5% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a vehicle built around a clear purpose rather than broad compromise. It feels most at home when the road gets rough, whether that means a dusty cow path or a snowy mountain road, and it is especially appealing to buyers who want a rugged SUV that can handle terrain outside the typical car’s comfort zone. Even in Limited trim, it still leans into that mission, with enough chrome and leather to present itself as a rough-and-tumble luxury alternative.
That focus comes with tradeoffs. The 2020 Toyota 4Runner’s strengths include standard advanced safety features, a powerful engine, and off-road capability, but it is also described as poor value for money, with poor fuel economy and interior materials that feel cheap. For shoppers who truly need four-wheel drive and prioritize durability and capability over refinement, those compromises may be easier to accept.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $35,762 |
| Year-Round Low | $33,526.25 |
| Year-Round High | $36,358.05 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,356 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.63% |
Prices have softened 1.63% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,405 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $33,526.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and they also highlight comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The trade-offs are familiar: it is not especially modern inside, and some owners want more contemporary features and a better interior design.
That lines up with the vehicle’s purpose-built character: it is aimed at buyers who want a rugged SUV that can handle rough terrain and still present a more upscale feel in Limited trim. Even so, the market shows 32.5% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable, rugged, and a vehicle they can count on, with value retention also coming through as a recurring theme. The engine’s longevity is called out as a strength, and the overall ownership experience is framed around durability and confidence over time.
The powertrain is presented as dependable and built for hard use rather than refinement, which supports the 4Runner’s reputation for staying in service for the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the concept of durability and more about how previous use may have affected a truck that is often bought for demanding driving.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of body, suspension, and interior condition. Because this SUV is often used for rough terrain, pay close attention to signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence that the vehicle has been pushed beyond normal commuting duty.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex; the Limited leans into comfort with leather upholstery, chrome accents, and a more upscale presentation.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, and the setup is tuned for durability and off-road use rather than smooth, efficient commuting.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are standard, but the lane-departure system is reactive rather than a more active lane-keeping assist.
- Infotainment: The 4Runner uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and subscription services, while higher trims add a JBL stereo and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. The powertrain content also notes that fuel economy does not improve with 2WD, and a real-world test returned 17.7 mpg.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR5 is the entry point, and it keeps the cloth interior and more basic presentation. It gets the standard safety suite, but it lacks the richer materials and added comfort touches found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 Premium is the best value if you want a more livable daily driver, since it adds SofTex and a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the pricier specialty trims.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most comfort-focused choice, with leather upholstery, chrome detailing, and the most luxury-leaning cabin treatment in the lineup.
- Off-road trim: TRD Pro is the most serious trail option, but it comes with a steep price premium that makes it harder to justify if you mostly drive on pavement.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up trims just to get the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,405 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.63% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,526.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,762 sits slightly below last year's $36,356.
That softer pricing can help you buy with less risk of overpaying, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a year ago. If you plan to resell later, the 4Runner’s value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well it has been maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and three-star ratings in rollover testing. The IIHS gave it Good scores in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scored Marginal.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are also standard.
The main caveat is the rollover result and the IIHS small-overlap driver-side rating, which are worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority. The high center of gravity and reactive lane-departure system also make it less reassuring than some rivals on the highway.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense P for this year.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,949, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,762 average.
- It emphasizes off-road grit and practicality over modern tech.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,370, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,762 average.
- It adds easy-to-use tech and keeps the rugged, utility-first formula.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, updated tech, and the 4Runner’s core ruggedness, the 2020 is the sensible pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you are willing to pay more for a slightly newer take on the same formula.
