Used 2020 Toyota 4Runner for Sale nearToledo, OH

How much does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 2.02% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,363 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and they also like its comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The trade-offs are familiar: it is a poor value for money, returns poor fuel economy, and its interior materials feel cheap.

That makes it a strong fit if you want a rugged SUV that feels ready for dusty cow paths or snowy mountain roads instead of polished pavement. If you want a more refined daily driver, the 4Runner’s purpose-built character may feel like a compromise.

34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe it as rugged, reliable, and a vehicle they can count on, with value retention also standing out as a recurring theme. The expert evaluation also points to the engine’s longevity as a strength, reinforcing the 4Runner’s dependability-minded reputation.

Toyota’s safety and convenience equipment adds to the sense that this is a truck-based SUV built for long-term use, and the standard maintenance and ownership experience is part of the appeal. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that durability does not erase age-related wear, especially if the vehicle has seen hard use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used off-road or in harsh weather. Focus on condition details that matter on a body-on-frame SUV: suspension wear, underbody damage, tire condition, and signs of heavy use. Because this model’s appeal is tied to rugged capability, you want to make sure the example you buy still feels mechanically tight and cosmetically cared for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium come standard with SofTex material; the Limited adds leather upholstery, and the Venture adds 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It is built for lumbering progress and off-road durability rather than smooth, efficient commuting, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The system is standard, and the vehicle also comes with eight standard airbags.
• Infotainment: The 4Runner uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth connectivity, a single USB media port in SR5 and TRD Off-Road trims, and available features such as a JBL stereo and navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.

Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4Runner formula without the extra comfort or appearance upgrades. It makes sense if you want the least expensive path into the model and do not need the added trim-specific equipment.
• SR5 Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want a more comfortable daily experience, since it adds a more upscale feel over the base model while staying close to the core 4Runner mission.
• TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the more trail-focused setup, since it leans into the 4Runner’s off-road character more directly than the lower trims.
• TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the better pick if you want the off-road hardware and a more upgraded cabin, making it a strong middle ground for buyers who want capability and comfort.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road-oriented choice in the lineup, aimed at buyers who want the most rugged expression of the 4Runner’s capability.
• Limited: This is the trim for you if comfort matters more than trail focus, since it adds leather upholstery and a more luxury-leaning presentation.
• Nightshade Special Edition: This is the style-first choice, with a stealthier look and plenty of blacked-out trim pieces.
• Venture Special Edition: This is the best fit if you want a more adventurous look and equipment, including 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you get the core driver-assistance suite across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward patience.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,363 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.02% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $33,536, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $35,007 sits slightly below last year's $35,730.

That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and still leave room for future value retention if you keep the vehicle in good condition. The 4Runner’s reputation for durability and strong owner satisfaction should continue to support demand, especially among shoppers who specifically want a rugged SUV with a loyal following.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and three-star ratings in rollover testing, while the IIHS gave it Good scores in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scored Marginal.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The SUV also comes with eight standard airbags.

The main caveat is the Marginal IIHS result in the small overlap front: driver-side test, along with the relatively high center of gravity that contributes to rollover concern. That means safety equipment is strong, but you should still pay close attention to crash history and overall condition when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Toyota adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense P for this year.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $31,773, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,007 average.
• It offers rugged off-road ability with proven hardware and a more basic feature set.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,849, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,007 average.
• It keeps the rugged formula while emphasizing reliability, resale value, and go-anywhere utility.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, modern safety tech, and the classic 4Runner character, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you are willing to pay more for a newer example.
