Used 2020 Toyota 4Runner for Sale nearSan Jose, CA

How much does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

There are 2,372 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and many also highlight its comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The overview also frames it as a vehicle with a clear purpose: it is built for terrain, not just commuting.

The trade-offs are just as clear. Experts call out poor value for money and poor fuel economy, and they note that the interior materials feel cheap.

If you want a rugged SUV with real off-road credibility and a strong ownership reputation, this year’s 4Runner fits that brief well. The market also shows 36.7% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to ruggedness, reliability, and durability, along with value retention and a reputation that appeals to buyers who want something they can count on. The expert performance writeup also emphasizes the engine’s longevity and describes the 4Runner as built to keep plowing ahead rather than chasing refinement.

Toyota’s maintenance messaging also helps the ownership picture, since the 4Runner’s standard safety and tech updates make it feel more current than older versions. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that durability does not erase age-related wear, especially if the vehicle has seen hard use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used off-road or in harsh weather. Focus on signs of body, suspension, and underbody wear, since this model’s appeal often comes from capability that can also accelerate wear. Condition matters more than mileage alone here, because a well-kept example is likely to be a better buy than a rougher one with a cleaner-looking price tag.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come with cloth, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex, and the Limited leans into comfort with leather upholstery. The Venture Special Edition adds 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack, while the Nightshade and Limited trims emphasize different visual themes.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic, rated at 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The setup is built for durability and off-road use rather than smooth, efficient commuting, and fuel economy is a weak point.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are standard, but the lane-keeping help is more reactive than active.
• Infotainment: The 4Runner uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, a single USB media port in SR5 and TRD Off-Road trims, and available navigation, JBL audio, and connected services on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner is rated at 16 mpg city and 19 mpg highway, with 17 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness, standard safety tech, and V6 power without paying for extras. It makes sense if you care more about capability than comfort features.
• SR5 Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel with SofTex while staying close to the core 4Runner formula. It is a smart middle ground if you want a nicer cabin without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the more trail-focused setup, including the off-road-oriented hardware and traction features described in the expert content. It is the better pick if your 4Runner will actually see rough terrain.
• TRD Off-Road Premium: This trim combines the off-road focus with a more comfortable interior, making it a strong choice if you want capability and some added refinement. It suits buyers who want the trail gear but do not want a bare-bones cabin.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road choice in the lineup and the one to buy if you want the most capability-oriented version. It is the right fit if you want the 4Runner at its most purpose-built.
• Limited: This is the comfort-first trim, with leather and a more upscale presentation. It is the one to choose if you want the 4Runner’s image and utility but spend more time on-road.
• Nightshade Special Edition: This trim is mainly about the stealthier blacked-out appearance. It is best if style matters more than added capability.
• Venture Special Edition: This trim adds off-road flavor with 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack. It is a good fit if you want a more adventure-ready look and equipment set without going all the way to the top off-road trim.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you do not need to move up the lineup just to get the core driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,372 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $33,540, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $34,622 sits slightly below last year's $34,865.

That small decline suggests the market has stayed relatively stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that usually points to predictable pricing rather than a fast-moving depreciation story. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you are starting from a position of relative market steadiness.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns Good ratings from IIHS in most crash tests, but Marginal in the small overlap front: driver-side test, and it earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA with three-star ratings in rollover testing.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are also standard.

The main caveat is the weaker IIHS small-overlap result and the lower rollover score from NHTSA. That means the 4Runner brings meaningful standard safety equipment, but you should still pay close attention to crash history and overall condition when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds Toyota Safety Sense P and an updated 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $31,349, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $34,622 average.
• It offers rugged off-road focus with more comfort than many rivals.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,569, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $34,622 average.
• It leans into rugged utility, reliability, and resale value.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the right pick if you want the updated tech and safety equipment without stepping up to the pricier 2021. If you are price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money while keeping the same core off-road identity.
