CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Summary
With 189 currently listed for sale near Mobile, AL and an average price of $41,193.00, 27.5% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
100.0% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a vehicle built around a clear purpose rather than broad compromise. It feels most at home when the road gets rough, whether that means a dusty cow path or a snowy mountain road, and it is especially appealing to buyers who want a rugged SUV that can handle terrain outside the typical car’s comfort zone. Even in Limited trim, it still leans into that mission, with enough chrome and leather to present itself as a rough-and-tumble luxury alternative.
That focus comes with tradeoffs. The 2020 Toyota 4Runner’s strengths include standard advanced safety features, a powerful engine, and off-road capability, but it is also described as poor value for money, with poor fuel economy and interior materials that feel cheap. For shoppers who truly need four-wheel drive and prioritize durability and capability over refinement, those compromises may be easier to accept.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

That fits the 4Runner’s use case well: it is aimed at you if you want a durable SUV with real off-road ability and a high seating position, not a polished crossover focused on refinement.
With 31.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as rugged, reliable, and durable, with value retention that helps it stand out for buyers who want something they can count on. The engine’s longevity is also called out as a strength, reinforcing the 4Runner’s reputation for dependable ownership.
Toyota Safety Sense P adds a layer of confidence, and the 4Runner’s overall setup is built around durability and long-term use. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about mechanical fragility and more about whether the vehicle has been used hard off-road or neglected over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used for towing, trail driving, or frequent winter duty. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of hard use rather than mileage alone. Pay close attention to how the drivetrain, suspension, and interior have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex; the Limited adds leather upholstery. All trims get an 8-inch touchscreen, but the Limited and TRD Pro stand out visually with different grille treatments.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic. It makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, and it is tuned more for durability and off-road use than fuel savings. Expect 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are standard. The lane-departure alert is reactive rather than a more active lane-keeping system.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa compatibility, a single USB media port in SR5 and TRD Off-Road trims, and subscription services are also included. Higher trims add a JBL stereo and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined, and real-world testing returned 17.7 mpg over more than 400 miles.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR5 gives you the core 4Runner experience, but it stays fairly basic with cloth upholstery and fewer comfort upgrades than the premium trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 Premium is the best value if you want a more comfortable daily driver, since it adds SofTex and keeps the 4Runner’s core capability intact.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most comfort-focused choice, with leather upholstery and a more upscale look, though it still feels utilitarian underneath.
- Off-road trim: TRD Pro is the most specialized choice, but it makes the most sense if you will actually use the extra off-road hardware.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you do not need to move up a trim to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,384 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,532.43, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,853 sits slightly below last year's $36,516.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the SUV for several years. The 4Runner’s reputation for ruggedness and durability should continue to support demand, especially among buyers who want a capable SUV with strong utility. Its value retention also benefits from the model’s loyal following and broad appeal to off-road shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns Good scores from IIHS in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scored Marginal. It also earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with three-star ratings in rollover testing.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are standard, which adds another layer of protection.
The main caveat is the Marginal small-overlap result and the SUV’s relatively high center of gravity, which makes the reactive lane-departure alert feel less reassuring than a more active lane-keeping system.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense P for a more modern ownership experience.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,985, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,853 average.
- It emphasizes off-road capability and reliability with a simpler, more straightforward setup.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,349, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,853 average.
- It leans into reliability, resale value, and rugged utility with continued off-road strength.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of updated tech, safety equipment, and current-market pricing, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money while keeping the core 4Runner formula intact. If you are willing to pay more for a newer example, the 2021 is worth considering, but the 2020 remains the sweet spot for many used buyers.
