Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru WRX stands out as a performance sedan that channels Subaru’s rally heritage into a practical four-door package. It is described as the road-going manifestation of decades in world rally racing, and the car’s appeal comes from distilling Subaru’s chassis and powertrain ideas into a harder-edged daily driver. That makes it distinctive for buyers who want something fun to drive without giving up the everyday usefulness of a sedan.
Its strongest selling points are straightforward: standard all-wheel drive and an available manual transmission. The test-drive data also notes that it blends sensible tech and safety features into an ideal daily driver performance car, which helps broaden its appeal beyond pure enthusiasts. At the same time, the WRX is not presented as a tech leader, and outdated technology is called out as a drawback. Owner feedback reinforces the car’s performance focus, with praise for turbo power, handling, and comfort, while also pointing to interior quality concerns and tire noise at higher speeds.

Ive only had it a couple days but man the cvt is great! The handling is beautiful, you feel stuck on the rode and even during a massive downpour you feel very much in control.

Pretty cool ride for a car that holds its valuable so well. You can really feel the turbo pull when you pass 2-3k rpm. Car has enough power for fun, but can still be smooth enough for a DD. Clutch was relatively light. The interior is pretty cheap (plasticy and terrible sound system), but this is a car to drive for when you want a little bit of umph. Wish they still had a hatchback version - Id have no second thoughts of my next car if that were the case.

Perfect enthusiast family daily driver. If it had a hatch it’d be 100%. I drive for DoorDash and it makes work something I look forward to. Ride comfort is perfect. I even get 30 mpg on highway easy. Only complaint is tire noise above 50 mph. But the sound system bumps hard enough to cover it up. For me this car checks all boxes, I wanted to get the last version of an older model before they dump even more unnecessary technology into it. My last car was the FR-S and while that car was super fun, this one offers similar thrills, more torque, and a lot more utility. Wish the levorg was available state side. Hatch would make it the best car ever.

Loved driving it. It would be nice if the linkage was a little tighter. It is very comfortable and visually appealing.

How much does the 2020 Subaru WRX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,441 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,974 |
| Year-Round High | $22,355 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,320 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.94% |
Prices have softened 3.94% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 617 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable range of cars to compare.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru WRX earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the turbo power, handling, and comfort, especially for daily driving. The feedback also points to the WRX’s dependable, long-term appeal for buyers who want a car they can count on, with performance that stays engaging over time.
The trade-offs are clear: the cabin quality can feel lacking, and tire noise at higher speeds is a recurring complaint. In practical terms, this is a strong fit if you want a fun sedan that still works as an everyday driver, but it is not the right choice if you prioritize refinement or a quiet commute.
A 31.3% share of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over the long haul. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the WRX’s durable, everyday usability alongside its performance focus, which supports the idea that it can handle regular use without feeling fragile.
The manual version’s fuel economy is respectable for the class, and the available maintenance-friendly ownership experience helps reduce some day-to-day hassle. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright failure and more about finding a car that has been driven hard and maintained carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven aggressively. Focus on signs of wear that match the WRX’s performance character, including tire condition, brake wear, and any evidence of rough use. It also helps to compare trim equipment carefully so you know whether the car has the features you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, power front-and-rear windows, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium adds 18-inch wheels, halogen fog lights, steering-responsive auto-on/off headlights, heated front seats, a power moonroof, and a larger 7-inch touchscreen. The Limited adds leather upholstery, push-button start, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.
- Powertrain: The WRX uses a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter boxer-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It comes with symmetrical all-wheel drive and a standard six-speed manual, with a CVT also available.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available, while EyeSight is optional on the WRX.
- Infotainment: The WRX has a 6.5-inch touchscreen on the Base trim and a 7-inch screen on higher trims. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual-equipped WRX returns 21 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined. The CVT-equipped WRX returns 18 mpg city, 24 highway, and 21 combined.
Which 2020 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: Base, Premium, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the WRX experience at the lowest entry point. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the turbocharged engine, a manual transmission, and core tech like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the equipment that makes the WRX feel more complete, including heated front seats, a moonroof, fog lights, and the larger touchscreen. If you want the sweet spot between price and comfort, start here.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale cabin touches, including leather upholstery, push-button start, and the power-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes the WRX feel more polished, but you pay for the extra convenience.
EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so check whether a specific car has the driver-assistance features you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
The market looks moderate, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 617 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,974, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $21,441 sits slightly below last year's $22,320.
That softer pricing suggests the WRX has become a bit more accessible for buyers, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right point in the cycle. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting depreciation exposure. Strong enthusiast demand can also help support values, especially for well-kept cars with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX safe?
The Subaru WRX earns Top Safety Pick honors from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The WRX comes standard with front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. EyeSight is available and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available.
One important caveat is that EyeSight is optional rather than standard on the WRX, so you should verify whether a specific used example has the driver-assistance package you want.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends standard all-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and daily-driver practicality into a performance sedan.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,905, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,441 average.
- It keeps the WRX formula while aiming for a more engaging everyday-driving experience.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because pricing has eased and the core WRX strengths are intact. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the secondary path to consider.
