CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru WRX
overall

Summary
With 92 currently listed for sale near Roanoke, VA and an average price of $22,998.00, 28.3% of 2020 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru WRX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru WRX stands out as a performance sedan that still feels practical enough for everyday use. Its appeal starts with the way it blends sensible tech and safety features into an ideal daily driver performance car, while its roots in Subaru’s motorsports efforts give it a more serious enthusiast identity than many compact sedans can claim. The WRX is presented as the road-going manifestation of decades in world rally racing, which helps explain why it feels like a distilled version of Subaru’s chassis and powertrain know-how rather than just a sporty trim.
What makes the 2020 WRX especially attractive is the combination of fun-to-drive character, a manual transmission option, and standard all-wheel drive. That mix gives it a broad appeal for buyers who want year-round traction without giving up engagement behind the wheel. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the available information points to outdated technology, and owner feedback also suggests some concerns about interior quality and tire noise at higher speeds. Even so, for shoppers who value performance and daily usability in the same package, the 2020 Subaru WRX has a distinctive formula.

Ive only had it a couple days but man the cvt is great! The handling is beautiful, you feel stuck on the rode and even during a massive downpour you feel very much in control.

Pretty cool ride for a car that holds its valuable so well. You can really feel the turbo pull when you pass 2-3k rpm. Car has enough power for fun, but can still be smooth enough for a DD. Clutch was relatively light. The interior is pretty cheap (plasticy and terrible sound system), but this is a car to drive for when you want a little bit of umph. Wish they still had a hatchback version - Id have no second thoughts of my next car if that were the case.

Perfect enthusiast family daily driver. If it had a hatch it’d be 100%. I drive for DoorDash and it makes work something I look forward to. Ride comfort is perfect. I even get 30 mpg on highway easy. Only complaint is tire noise above 50 mph. But the sound system bumps hard enough to cover it up. For me this car checks all boxes, I wanted to get the last version of an older model before they dump even more unnecessary technology into it. My last car was the FR-S and while that car was super fun, this one offers similar thrills, more torque, and a lot more utility. Wish the levorg was available state side. Hatch would make it the best car ever.

The expert review reinforces that sense of durability by describing the WRX as a distilled expression of Subaru’s chassis and powertrain know-how, and it emphasizes the brand’s long-running performance and all-wheel-drive engineering. The cost-effectiveness discussion also notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about how hard the car may have been driven and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Pay close attention to signs of wear in the suspension, tires, brakes, and interior, since this model’s enthusiast appeal can mean a tougher life than the average sedan. It also helps to compare condition carefully across listings, because the market includes both cleaner examples and cars that may need more immediate attention.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, power front-and-rear windows, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium adds 18-inch wheels, halogen fog lights, steering-responsive auto-on/off headlights, heated front seats, a power moonroof, and a larger 7-inch touchscreen. The Limited adds leather upholstery, push-button start, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.
- Powertrain: The WRX uses a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter boxer-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It comes with symmetrical all-wheel drive and a standard six-speed manual, while a CVT is also available with SI-DRIVE and paddle shifters.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available, and EyeSight is optional on the WRX rather than standard.
- Infotainment: The WRX comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and a 7-inch screen is available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual-equipped WRX returns 21 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. The CVT-equipped WRX returns 18 mpg city, 24 highway, 21 combined.
Which 2020 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: Base, Premium, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the WRX experience at the lowest entry point. You still get the core formula: turbo power, standard all-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and a usable tech setup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the equipment that makes the car feel more complete day to day, including heated front seats, a moonroof, fog lights, and the larger touchscreen. If you want the sweet spot between price and comfort, start here.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale cabin touches and convenience features, including leather upholstery, push-button start, and the power-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you plan to keep the car longer and want a more polished interior.
EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so make sure you verify whether a specific listing includes the driver-assistance suite you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 24.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 618 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.44% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,973.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $21,810 sits slightly below last year's $22,355.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests the market has adjusted downward from where it was a year ago. If you plan to resell later, the WRX’s value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has been kept close to stock. Clean, well-maintained examples should remain easier to move than rougher cars with accident history or heavy modifications.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX safe?
The Subaru WRX earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The WRX comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. EyeSight is available and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available.
One important caveat is that EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so you should confirm whether a specific used example has the driver-assistance features you want.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 24.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 keeps the WRX formula focused on manual-transmission performance and everyday usability.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $23,233, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,810 average.
- It adds a sharper focus on everyday usability around the same engaging driving experience.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a healthy supply of listings. If you are willing to pay more for the next model year, the 2021 is the better path for shoppers who want to compare a slightly newer example before deciding.
