Used 2020 Subaru Outback for Sale nearSan Francisco, CA

How much does the 2020 Subaru Outback cost?

Prices have softened 6.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,726 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 4.95/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, spacious cabin, and safety-focused feel, and many also highlight its smooth ride and strong all-weather confidence. The main trade-offs are the sluggish touchscreen response and the underwhelming base engine. For you, that means the Outback makes the most sense if you want a practical, distinctive crossover with everyday usefulness rather than a flashy or especially quick one. It also fits buyers who value space, value for money, and a comfortable, safety-minded driving experience. Good and great deals account for 36.6% of listings, which is a solid sign of market opportunity.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.95/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with owners repeatedly emphasizing confidence in the car’s long-term usefulness. The expert evaluation also highlights Subaru’s all-time symmetrical all-wheel drive as a system that delivers consistent power and avoids the delay you can get when traction systems intervene after wheel slip. The cost-effectiveness discussion also notes that Subaru’s pricing structure gives you a lot of vehicle for the money. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with the car’s technical quirks and feature frustrations over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Outback?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the touchscreen, driver-assistance systems, and overall cabin condition, since those are the areas where this model year shows the most personality and the most potential frustration. It also makes sense to pay close attention to how the engine and transmission feel in real driving, especially if you want stronger passing power or plan to keep the car for a long time.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i is the most stripped-down version, with dual 7-inch screens instead of the larger tablet-style display, and it can feel a little spartan compared with higher trims. Premium adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat, while Limited brings more upscale comfort and convenience equipment. Touring is the most luxurious non-XT choice, and Onyx Edition XT adds a more rugged look and extra capability-oriented gear.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter engine makes 182 horsepower and is tuned for efficiency and everyday use, while the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine in XT trims makes 260 hp and 277 pound-feet of torque for stronger passing and towing confidence. Both engines use a CVT, and Subaru’s tuning helps it feel more natural than many rivals.
• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. The base trim also gets wiper-linked automatic headlights. Blind-spot monitoring is not standard on Premium and must be added there, while Limited adds more equipment and reverse auto braking.
• Infotainment: The main screen is 11.6 inches on most trims, while the base trim uses dual 7-inch screens. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, but the system can be slow to respond, and the camera image quality trails the size of the display.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

Which 2020 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2020 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5i, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it gives you standard all-wheel drive, LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, and the core safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback, but it is the most basic-feeling version and misses the larger touchscreen.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. If you want the Outback’s modern cabin experience without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• Limited: This trim is the better pick if you want a more upscale daily driver, since it adds leather upholstery, a memory system for the driver, an upgraded Harman Kardon stereo, power liftgate, and reverse auto braking. It also makes blind-spot monitoring standard, which is a meaningful safety and convenience upgrade.
• Touring: Choose this if you want the most comfort-focused non-turbo Outback, with upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof. It suits you best if you value a near-luxury feel over maximum value.
• Onyx Edition XT: This is the most capability-oriented choice, pairing the turbo engine with heated rear seats, a front-view camera, hill-descent control, and a more aggressive X-Mode setup. It is the trim to buy if you want the strongest mix of power and rough-road confidence.
• Limited XT: This is the turbocharged version of the Limited formula, so you get the stronger engine plus the upscale equipment and convenience features. It is a good fit if you want more power without giving up comfort.
• Touring XT: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most luxurious and most powerful Outback in the lineup. It combines the Touring trim’s comfort upgrades with the turbo engine.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but blind-spot monitoring is not standard on Premium and becomes standard only as you move up.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Outback?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,726 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 76.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,672, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $20,672 sits slightly below last year's $22,149.

That softer pricing trend suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and trim choice than it would be in a stronger pricing environment. Well-equipped trims and clean history should hold up better than a basic example with visible wear or missing features.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.95/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2020 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. The standard safety package is a major strength, especially for the price, and the all-wheel-drive system adds confidence in poor weather. One caveat is that the EyeSight system can be sensitive to conditions that obstruct its view, and DriverFocus is a notable disappointment because it can be overly intrusive and inconsistent in use.

Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.95/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a larger touchscreen, updated engines, and more modern safety tech.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,953, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,672 average.
• It emphasizes reliability, low cost, and high resale with a more straightforward everyday focus.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the better value and the more modern-feeling cabin, especially if you can find a clean, well-priced example. If you are more price-sensitive and want the simplest path to Outback ownership, the 2021 is worth considering, but the 2020’s lower average price and stronger feature set make it the more compelling buy for most shoppers.
