How much does the 2020 Subaru Legacy cost?

Prices have softened 9.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 517 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

The Legacy fits you well if you want a practical midsize sedan with standard all-wheel drive, strong value for money, and a clear focus on efficiency and safety. Its standard advanced safety features and all-weather capability make it especially appealing if you want a sensible daily driver rather than a flashy one.

The trade-offs are worth weighing: the technology can be unintuitive, and the base engine is underwhelming. Even so, the overall package is still compelling if your priorities are practicality, traction, and value.

36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Legacy’s reliability case is built around its practical design, standard all-wheel drive, and straightforward focus on everyday use. Its expert evaluation also points to strong mileage and a durable, function-first character that should appeal to buyers who want a sedan built for routine commuting and all-weather confidence.

The 2.5-liter engine is described as fuel-efficient, and the turbocharged option adds more power for buyers who want extra performance. The cost-effectiveness notes also reinforce that this model is positioned as a value-oriented choice, which can help reduce ownership stress if you keep up with routine maintenance.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the complicated infotainment setup and underwhelming base engine may be frustrating over time, even if the core mechanical package remains appealing.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Legacy?

At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Focus closely on overall condition, because a clean-looking listing can still hide accident-related issues that affect value and long-term satisfaction.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim comes with remote keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, dual 7-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, voice recognition, Subaru EyeSight, and 17-inch steel wheels with plastic covers. Higher trims add features such as a larger touchscreen, alloy wheels, a power moonroof, heated seats, and more upscale interior materials.
• Powertrain: The base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trims use a 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, while the Limited XT and Touring XT use a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer 4-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The base engine returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Standard safety equipment also includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Which 2020 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point while still getting standard all-wheel drive, Subaru EyeSight, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a solid safety and convenience baseline. It’s the trim to consider if you care most about price and core capability.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, alloy wheels, four USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power moonroof, and available comfort upgrades through the All-Weather Package. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to target.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more expressive look, with 18-inch alloys, a trunk spoiler, a more aggressive front fascia, LED fog lights, red contrast stitching, and aluminum alloy pedal covers.
• Limited: This trim is the move if you want a more upscale feel, with adaptive LED headlights, auto power up/down for all four windows, an 8-way power front passenger seat, driver memory settings, perforated leather upholstery, and heated rear seats.
• Limited XT: This is the better pick if you want the turbocharged engine plus extra comfort and convenience features, including dual tailpipes, a distracted-driving monitor, and a heated steering wheel.
• Touring XT: This is the top choice if you want the most luxurious version, with the turbocharged engine, power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals, full Nappa leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Subaru EyeSight is standard across the lineup, so you don’t have to move up for the core safety suite.

What is the 2020 Subaru Legacy's resale value?

The current average of $17,732 sits slightly below last year's $19,660.

That price movement suggests the Legacy has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier for you to sell into a value-conscious market later. If you buy at the current average or below, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s higher level.

The model’s standard all-wheel drive and strong safety reputation should help keep it relevant with shoppers who want practical transportation. Its broad appeal as a sensible midsize sedan also supports demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy safe?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driver-assistance features, including forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. The system also includes an alert that triggers when the car in front of you starts moving, which can help you avoid holding up traffic after a stop.

Standard safety equipment also includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The base trim already gets the core safety suite, so you don’t need to move up the lineup to get meaningful protection.

Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.81% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines standard all-wheel drive, strong mileage, and standard advanced safety features in a practical midsize sedan package.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,622, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,732 average.
• It keeps standard all-wheel drive while emphasizing comfort, efficiency, and safety.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because prices have eased and the core appeal remains intact. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who want to stay closer to the latest version of the Legacy.
