CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru Ascent
overall

Summary
With 1,663 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,077.00, 34.5% of 2020 Subaru Ascents for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Ascent 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Ascent is an appealing family-size SUV aimed at both existing Subaru owners and shoppers who need more room for people, pets, and cargo. It stands out by giving Subaru a three-row, seven-passenger option that is meant to be practical without losing the brand’s familiar appeal.
What makes it especially attractive is its standard all-wheel drive, comfortable ride, and standard advanced safety features. Those strengths help give the Ascent a well-rounded, family-friendly character, and the interior is described as roomy and comfortable. At the same time, it is not without compromises: performance is fairly pedestrian, and fuel economy is poor. That mix makes the 2020 Subaru Ascent most compelling for buyers who value space, safety, and everyday comfort more than quick acceleration or efficiency.

Roomy and just as luxurious as comparable top of the line mid-size SUVs (like Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander). Safety rating is unbeatable. Smooth drive and great breaking.

Wonderful, beautiful car! Blown away about how well thought out the design of the car was. Very functional and pleasing to the eye ! Kids love it too.

Reviewed a 2020 Subaru Ascent on Jan 15, 2022
I needed a vehicle with a third row option because my family is expanding. I test drove a Toyota Highlander and just felt this suited me better. The third row in the Highlander was uncomfortable and felt like an afterthought. The third row in the Ascent actually feels like a real third row - there is more room and the seats sit back a little at an incline, rather than being uncomfortably upright and with no leg room. I also found it easier to get into the back row in the Ascent, compared to the Highlander. We considered the Toyota Sienna hybrid, but I didnt really want a mini van and I didnt want something ridiculously huge. The Ascent is big, but reasonably so and very comfortable to drive. I think it will be great for long family trips and it feels very safe. Im only 53 and always feel uncomfortable and awkward driving a big beast of an SUV. But the drivers seat and steering wheel all seem to fit me very well. The Ascent also has a really great turn radius, so its more maneuverable than it appears. Lots of great family-friendly features and I also like that it has a good amount of ground clearance. It sits high off the ground but even as Im six months pregnant its still easy enough for me to get in and out of. I only wish they made a hybrid version for better fuel economy and more eco-friendly. However, the mpg is decent, given the size (comparable or even better than my old Honda CRV)

If you find a listing below $20,063.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Ascent earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its roominess, safety features, family-friendly design, and comfortable interior. They also describe the driving experience as luxurious and well-balanced, which fits a three-row SUV meant for people, pets, and cargo.
The trade-offs are familiar: performance is fairly pedestrian, and some drivers wanted better fuel economy or more tech features. That makes the Ascent a better fit if you value space, safety, and everyday comfort over quick acceleration or efficiency.
With a 33.2% good-or-great-deal share in the market, you have enough pricing spread to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for comfort, safety, and family-friendly usability. That kind of feedback matters because it suggests the Ascent is the sort of SUV people feel confident living with over time.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Ascent as a faithful friend in bad weather and a vehicle built for people who enjoy the outdoors. It also emphasizes Subaru’s standard all-wheel drive and generous ground clearance, both of which support confidence in everyday use and in rough conditions.
If you’re shopping used, the main long-term risk is that the Ascent’s mechanical and tech irritations can add up, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Ascent?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the transmission behavior, brake feel, suspension condition, and the operation of the infotainment and driver-assistance systems. Focus on overall condition and evidence of careful ownership, since small annoyances can become bigger ownership frustrations.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model starts with smaller 18-inch wheels and lacks dark-tinted privacy glass, while Premium adds nicer detailing, a superior infotainment system, and more features. Limited brings leather seats, and Touring adds premium leather, a panoramic sunroof, special wood trim, and other luxury-themed enhancements.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a CVT and AWD. It delivers 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, with strong high-altitude performance, but the setup is also described as thirsty and not especially engaging.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the standard camera-based driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Premium adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
- Infotainment: All models get Starlink with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, integrated apps, and a CD player. Premium adds an 8-inch touchscreen, text messaging, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and connected services, while Touring upgrades to a high-resolution screen and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive returned 18.9 mpg, and the official combined estimate for versions with 20-inch wheels is 22 mpg. The driving range is described as fewer than 365 miles per tank.
Which 2020 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru Ascent is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Premium, Limited, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but it misses some of the visual and equipment upgrades that make the Ascent feel more polished. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable keeping things simple.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim. It adds nicer detailing, a superior infotainment system, more features, and access to the larger wheels, while also bringing blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Limited: This trim is the step up if you want leather seats and more upscale equipment without going all the way to the top model. It also adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
- Touring: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with premium leather in an exclusive color, a panoramic sunroof, special wood trim, navigation, and a high-resolution screen. It suits you best if you want the most upscale Ascent experience.
The safety package starts with EyeSight, and Premium and Limited add extra driver-assistance features that improve everyday confidence.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Ascent?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,742 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,063.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $20,061 sits slightly below last year's $22,697.
That price movement suggests the Ascent has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average.
The market also appears reasonably active, which can help support resale when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent safe?
The Ascent earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the standard camera-based driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Premium trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
The safety story is especially strong because Subaru also adds a rear-seat reminder system for 2020, plus connected emergency and roadside services. That said, some of the more advanced safety equipment is reserved for higher trims, so you’ll want to confirm exactly which features are included on the used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines standard all-wheel drive, roomy family space, and top-tier safety.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,754, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,061 average.
- It’s a practical three-row SUV with standard all-wheel drive and strong family appeal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,250, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,061 average.
- It adds a few key safety features as newly standard equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and family usefulness, the 2020 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money while keeping the core Subaru formula intact. If you want the newer safety content and can spend more, the 2021 is worth a look.
