FAQs
Porsche’s original SUV, the Cayenne, has been around since 2003. A hybrid model with a V6 backed by an electric motor arrived for 2010, and then a plug-in version called the Cayenne E-Hybrid joined the lineup for 2015, making it the first plug-in hybrid in the increasingly competitive premium luxury SUV market. The E-Hybrid range expands for 2020 with a new Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, available in both standard form, and as a coupe with a lower roofline and wider rear track than the standard Cayenne. A coupe version of the standard E-Hybrid is also new for 2020. Based on the same platform as the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga, Cayenne E-Hybrids stand out with Acid Green coloring around the badges and with Acid Green brake calipers.
Porsche uses hybrid technology to enhance performance. The new Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid is, in fact, the most powerful Cayenne Porsche has ever sold, with the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8’s 541 horsepower working with an electric motor for a combined system output of 670 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to get the hefty, battery-laden SUV from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.6 seconds and on to 183 mph.
The standard E-Hybrid is no slouch, with a 3.0-liter turbo V6 working with the electric motor to produce 455 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-economy figures for the new trims aren’t out yet, but the 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid manages 22 combined mpg or 46 MPGe. And when it comes time to recharge, Porsche claims that an upgrade to the charging system allows for completely recharging the 14.1-kWh battery in as few as 2.4 hours with a 240-volt connection.
In addition to the herculean performance, the new Turbo S E-Hybrid also gets carbon-composite brakes, Porsche Torque Vectoring, and the Sport Chrono Package as standard equipment. Rear-wheel steering and a sports exhaust are both available options. E-Hybrid Coupes, meanwhile, are available with a Lightweight Sport Package that sheds up to 48 pounds, thanks to a carbon-fiber roof and carbon fiber for several body pieces. Coupes also get a fixed rear spoiler above the rear window, along with a new adaptive rear spoiler.
As has long been the case with Cayennes, the interior of the latest version is a very nice place to be with fantastic attention to detail, plenty of standard equipment, and an ample amount of tempting options. In front of the driver are two 7-inch LCD screens flanking a central tachometer, and each of the LCD screens can be configured to read like gauges or display a wide range of data and telemetry. In the middle of the dash, meanwhile, is a 12.3-inch touchscreen similar to that found in other Porsches. The Cayenne and Cayenne E-Hybrid are too expensive for crash testing, but forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking are both standard features. Optional extras include a head-up display (HUD), lane-change assist, cross-traffic detection, and blind-spot monitoring.
There are plenty of high-end SUVs that are both sporty and luxurious, but there are fewer with hybrid or electric powertrains. One obvious alternative to the Cayenne E-Hybrid is the all-electric Tesla Model X, which has an impressive range and is devastatingly quick. A loaded BMW X5 or Range Rover may also be worth considering.
