CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 594 currently listed for sale and an average price of $47,327, 31.5% of 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.9 / 5 stars.
72.7% of 2020 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a flagship luxury sedan that blends advanced technology with serious performance. In the W222 generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that significantly cut weight and improved rigidity, and the model also featured two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel. It retained many physical controls, which may make the system easier to live with than newer, more button-light setups, and it also kept night vision. Mercedes further loaded the car with luxury and convenience features such as selectable ambient lighting, rear executive seating packages, active parking assist, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio.
For 2020, the S-Class was largely a carry-over year, so its appeal came from the breadth of equipment and the range of powertrains already in place. The lineup included the S 560 with a 4.0-liter V8 making 463 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, the S 450 with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 making 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, and the S 560e plug-in hybrid with 469 system horsepower and 30 miles of electric range. Buyers looking for a more dramatic version could also find the AMG S 65 with 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The generation’s reliability record is described as very good overall, though ownership still demands a healthy budget for maintenance, and the car’s complexity means electrical issues and suspension concerns can still be expensive to address.

Features are good not as much tech obviously as newer models but I'm good with that. Touchscreen feature i kinda miss , but I'll get over that. Great values for this car $37K..42k miles 1 owner ! Well taken care of..ride is so silky smooth , great space...will add for this size car trunk is rather small..used the space for rear seating..roomy vehicle..Love it !

How much does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $46,626 |
| Year-Round Low | $46,626 |
| Year-Round High | $53,684 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $52,722 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.56% |
Prices have softened 11.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 606 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the luxurious feel, impressive performance, comfort of the ride, and advanced features. The S-Class also fits well if you want a flagship luxury sedan with a broad equipment list and serious performance, though the cabin and ownership experience are aimed at buyers who value refinement over simplicity. With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, luxury, and a trouble-free ownership experience when properly maintained. The same feedback also suggests you should expect higher upkeep costs, so long-term ownership risk is less about basic satisfaction and more about budgeting for maintenance and repairs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 73.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on bodywork, suspension behavior, and electrical operation, since those areas matter most on a complex luxury sedan. You should also focus on overall condition and maintenance records, because a well-kept example is more likely to deliver the ownership experience you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 606 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $46,626, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $46,626 sits slightly below last year's $52,722.
That price movement suggests the model has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A softer market today can also make it easier for you to find a well-equipped example without paying peak pricing. If demand stays steady, the S-Class's flagship status should continue to support interest from luxury buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $59,183, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $46,626 average.
- It brings a redesigned cabin with more sophisticated infotainment and updated powertrains.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines strong owner satisfaction with a lower average price and meaningful deal availability. If you want the newer redesign and can stretch your budget, the 2021 is the better secondary path.
