How much does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost?

Prices have softened 8.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,036 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

The E-Class stands out as a luxury car with a stylish design, impressive technology, and an effortless demeanor. It also offers multiple body styles, which broadens its appeal if you want the E-Class experience in different forms.

The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and difficult-to-use technology, with poor fuel economy also called out in the test-drive data.

At 36.1% good or great deals, the market offers some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The E-Class is described as a rock-solid, impeccably built car, and the test-drive data emphasizes its strong build quality and refined demeanor. The performance notes also point to a revised turbocharged 4-cylinder that is noticeably improved from previous years, with quicker response and less noise than before.

The ownership picture still carries the usual used-luxury-car risk, especially because depreciation is steep and some examples may have been optioned heavily or maintained inconsistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has advanced driver-assistance or high-end comfort options. Focus on overall condition, because this model can be loaded with expensive technology and luxury features that are costly to sort out after the sale.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base E350 sedan is the entry point, while the E450 coupe, E450 4Matic wagon, E450 cabriolet, and E63 S sit higher in the lineup. The base sedan is the most straightforward way into the E-Class, but it also reflects the model’s biggest feature gap: the most lavish equipment and more powerful setups cost much more.
• Powertrain: The E350 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 273 pound-feet of torque and a 9-speed automatic. The E450 upgrades to a 3.0-liter V6 with 362 hp and 369 lb-ft, while AMG models add even more power and sharper responses.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package unlocks the semi-automated driving system, including self-steering, obstacle avoidance help, lane changes with the turn signal, curve slowing, and sensing people and objects around the car. Forward emergency braking, a driver attention monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are standard, while other driver-assist features are optional.
• Infotainment: Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are standard, and the dash can be reconfigured in multiple designs. The system also includes a V2X feature, but the test-drive data notes that some technology can be difficult to use.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is EPA-estimated between 19 and 23 mpg city and 26 to 32 highway, depending on powertrain and body style.

Which 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 5 trim levels: E350 sedan, E450 coupe, E450 4Matic wagon, E450 cabriolet, and E63 S.

Here's the short version:

• E350 sedan: This is the best-value starting point if you want the E-Class experience at the lowest base price. It gives you the core luxury design, standard tech, and the most accessible entry into the lineup, but it also comes with the underwhelming base engine.
• E450 coupe: Choose this if you want more power and a more upscale grand-touring feel. The V6 makes everyday driving feel more effortless, and it suits buyers who care more about smooth performance than maximum practicality.
• E450 4Matic wagon: This is the most versatile choice if you want the E-Class formula with extra utility. It keeps the upscale character while adding the wagon body style for buyers who need more cargo flexibility.
• E450 cabriolet: Pick this if open-air driving matters most. The convertible body style is highlighted as especially well suited to the E-Class design, making it the style-first choice in the lineup.
• E63 S: This is the performance outlier, with extreme power and a much more aggressive character. It suits buyers who want the most serious driving experience and are willing to pay for it.

The sedan earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating, while the coupe and cabriolet were not tested by IIHS or NHTSA.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,036 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $29,935, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?

The current average of $30,283 sits slightly below last year's $33,101.

That decline suggests the market has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can be helpful if you’re buying now and later selling into a more stable price band. For a future seller, the key is that the biggest value drop has already happened, so a well-kept example may hold up better than a newer, more expensive luxury car.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The E-Class sedan earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, including five-star frontal, side, and rollover ratings.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The Driver Assistance Package adds the semi-automated driving system, which can steer, help avoid stopped obstacles, change lanes with the turn signal, slow for curves, and detect people and objects around the car. Standard safety equipment includes forward emergency braking, a driver attention monitor, and blind-spot monitoring, while other driver-assist features remain optional.

The coupe and cabriolet were not tested by IIHS or NHTSA, so their crash-test picture is less complete.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 adds a new base engine to the lineup, even though the test-drive data says it remains underwhelming.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,737, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $30,283 average.
• It gets a mid-cycle update for the infotainment system, engines, and exterior styling.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices have softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a fresher update, the 2021 is the better path for shoppers who want the newer styling and revised tech.
