How much does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA cost?

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It stands out as a small luxury car that feels more upscale than budget-minded, with coupe-like styling that still works for commuters and first-time luxury buyers who want a comfortable place to sit and an occasional back seat for guests or kids. The ride quality is a major plus, and the voice commands work well.

The trade-offs are clear: the headrests can’t be adjusted, the lane-keep assist is overly aggressive, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the market still shows 35.3% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The CLA is presented as a more sophisticated vehicle than the one it replaces, and the expert evaluation emphasizes that it feels more upscale and polished than earlier entry-level luxury efforts. Its turbocharged 4-cylinder powertrain is described as strong for the car’s size, and the transmission is praised for keeping the engine in its optimal power range.

The cost-effectiveness notes also point to a car that has moved upmarket, which usually means you should expect a more premium ownership experience rather than bargain-basement running costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a well-optioned luxury car can become expensive to keep satisfying if prior maintenance was deferred.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA?

At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or shows signs of cosmetic repair. Focus on condition details that matter in a small luxury car: cabin wear, electronics behavior, and whether the car drives as smoothly as it should.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The CLA 250 comes standard with LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, sport bucket seats, and a 7-inch touchscreen with a center-console trackpad. The higher-spec versions add all-wheel drive or performance-oriented hardware, but the base car already covers the essentials well.
• Powertrain: The CLA 250 uses a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The front-wheel-drive version is rated at 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 28 combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 23 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined.
• Safety package: The driver-assistance package includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic high beams, and a driver-drowsiness monitor. The lane-keeping assist can be abrupt, so make sure it behaves the way you expect during a test drive.
• Infotainment: The CLA uses MBUX with a touchscreen and trackpad controller, plus voice control through “Hey, Mercedes.” The system can be paired with a larger 10.25-inch screen on some cars.
• Fuel efficiency: The CLA 250 4Matic is rated at 23 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined, and the front-wheel-drive CLA 250 is rated at 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 28 combined.

Here's the short version:

• CLA 250: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core CLA experience with the stylish cabin, strong tech, and the standard equipment list that makes the car feel premium. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model.
• CLA 250 4Matic: This is the best-value trim because it adds all-wheel drive while keeping the same turbocharged 4-cylinder powertrain and the same upscale everyday character. It is the trim CarGurus would suggest for most shoppers.
• AMG CLA 35 4Matic: This is the performance-oriented step up for buyers who want a more athletic version of the CLA’s dramatic personality.
• AMG CLA 45 4Matic: This is the most performance-focused version in the lineup for shoppers who want the strongest expression of the CLA’s sporty side.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 399 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.84% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,361, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA's resale value?

The current average of $21,361 sits slightly below last year's $24,506.

That price movement suggests the CLA has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you keep the car in good condition and avoid overpaying for options, you may be better positioned when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA safe?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, and traction control. The driver-assistance package includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic high beams, and a driver-drowsiness monitor.

The main caveat is the lane-keeping assist, which can react abruptly and feels more aggressive than many systems in this class. If safety tech matters to you, make sure you test that system carefully and confirm the exact package content on the car you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.84% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 redesign brought a more upscale cabin, sharper styling, and a much stronger luxury feel.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $24,211, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,361 average.
• It carries forward the improved upscale feel with sharp styling and an advanced user interface.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and the redesign already delivers the modern CLA experience. If you’re willing to pay more for the next model year, the 2021 is the cleaner choice for shoppers who want to spend extra for a newer example.
