CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 151 currently listed for sale near Orlando, FL and an average price of $18,024, 32.5% of 2020 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
100.0% of 2020 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by blending mainstream practicality with a more premium feel than many shoppers expect from a compact crossover. Mazda’s approach is to move the CX-5 into “premium” territory, combining the value of a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology associated with luxury brands. That positioning helps explain why it is Mazda’s most popular vehicle, and why it appeals to buyers who want something more distinctive than the typical small SUV.
What makes the 2020 Mazda CX-5 especially appealing is its premium interior materials, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character. Owners also praise its comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, ample highway power, and safety features, along with the luxurious feel of the cabin. At the same time, the CX-5 is not without drawbacks: its technology is described as outdated, and some owners wish for more cargo space, more rear legroom, and more power from the engine.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

How much does the 2020 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,279 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,189 |
| Year-Round High | $20,701 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,676 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.92% |
Prices have softened 1.92% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,272 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns 4.83/5 from owners and 7.67/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the ample power on the highway. They also highlight the safety features and the luxurious feel of the cabin.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology, limited cargo space, and tighter rear legroom, along with some desire for more engine power. In practical terms, that means you should like this SUV most if you want a compact crossover that feels more upscale than average and still works well for daily driving and road trips.
Only 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than flooded with bargains.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for the comfortable interior, smooth ride, and safety features that help the SUV feel easy to count on. That kind of feedback suggests the CX-5 delivers the sort of long-term confidence used buyers usually want.
The expert evaluation also reinforces that impression by describing Mazda’s design, engineering, and quality as a cut above mainstream rivals. If you’re shopping used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic dependability and more about whether the vehicle’s condition and maintenance history match its premium positioning.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and technology still feel consistent with the vehicle’s mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport trim has the 7-inch touchscreen and basic Mazda Connect setup, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring brings an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services. If you want the best value, Touring is the trim that adds the most everyday usability without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while Grand Touring Reserve and Signature get a turbocharged version with up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel. The turbo model comes only with AWD, and the non-turbo setup is available with FWD or AWD.
- Safety package: The i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are included, while adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.
- Infotainment: Sport uses a 7-inch touchscreen, Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Grand Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen, and Signature adds navigation plus a surround-view camera system. The system can feel unintuitive, so it’s worth testing the controls before you buy.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined, while the naturally aspirated engine with AWD is rated at 26 mpg combined and the FWD version at 28 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, Mazda Connect, and the full safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it leaves out the smartphone integration and richer tech features that many shoppers will want.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without pushing you into the pricier luxury-oriented trims. If you want the most useful everyday upgrade, this is the one to target.
- Grand Touring: This trim adds the 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, Bose audio, and adaptive headlights, so it’s the better pick if you care about comfort and convenience features. It’s a strong middle ground if you want a more premium feel.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is where you get the turbocharged engine, so it’s the right choice if you want stronger acceleration and don’t mind paying more for it. It also moves you into AWD-only territory.
- Signature: This is the most upscale version, with navigation, a surround-view camera system, and the most premium cabin presentation. It’s the right pick if you want the most luxurious CX-5 experience.
The safety package is standard on most trims, while adaptive headlights come standard starting with Grand Touring.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,272 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,189, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $20,279 sits slightly below last year's $20,676.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term resale gains if you plan to sell soon. Even so, the CX-5’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction should help it stay appealing to used shoppers.
If you keep the vehicle in good condition and choose a desirable trim, you should have a better chance of holding value than with a less distinctive compact SUV. The strongest resale prospects will usually come from well-kept examples with the right equipment and a clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also included.
Adaptive headlights are the main safety-related upgrade, and they come standard with Grand Touring trim. That means lower trims still get a strong safety package, but you’ll need to move up if you want the added visibility help around dark curves.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s premium positioning, strong safety, and upscale cabin feel make this year especially appealing.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,016, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,279 average.
- It adds improved handling, smartphone connectivity, and more power from the turbocharged top trims.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,151, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,279 average.
- It brings updated tech and a new lineup addition for shoppers who want a fresher version.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the right default if you want the best balance of price, safety, and premium feel. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 is worth a look because it undercuts the current-year average while keeping much of the same core appeal. If you want newer tech and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is the upgrade path to consider.
