CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 129 currently listed for sale near Orlando, FL and an average price of $16,538.00, 30.2% of 2020 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming a mainstream compact crossover toward premium territory. Mazda’s approach is to combine the value of a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology more commonly associated with luxury vehicles, and that gives the CX-5 a more upscale feel than many shoppers expect in this segment. It also benefits from being part of the most popular vehicle segment in America, which helps explain why it has become the automaker’s most popular vehicle.
What makes the 2020 Mazda CX-5 appealing is the way it blends style and substance. The available expert impressions point to premium interior materials, stylish design, and a fun-to-drive character, while owner feedback reinforces the comfortable interior and smooth, quiet ride. That said, the CX-5 is not without compromises: the expert summary notes outdated technology, and some owners wished for more cargo space, more rear legroom, and more power from the engine.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

How much does the 2020 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,309 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,200.18 |
| Year-Round High | $20,743.55 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,739 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.07% |
Prices have softened 2.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,148 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $19,200.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the upscale feel. They also like the ample highway power and the safety features, which reinforces the CX-5’s premium-leaning appeal.
The trade-offs are familiar: the expert summary points to outdated technology, and owners mention limited cargo space and rear legroom, along with wishing for more engine power. That makes it a strong fit if you value comfort, refinement, and a more premium driving experience in a mainstream compact SUV.
With 26.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is enough market activity to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the sense of a luxurious, trouble-free daily driver. That kind of feedback matters because it suggests you can count on the CX-5 to deliver a polished experience over time.
The expert evaluation also supports that impression by describing Mazda’s design, engineering, and quality as a cut above mainstream competitors. The cost-effectiveness commentary reinforces that Mazda has held the line on pricing while improving the product, which is a good sign for long-term ownership confidence.
For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its premium feel and avoid age-related wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the vehicle’s premium interior and tech features have aged poorly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport trim is the most basic version, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring brings an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and a SiriusXM data subscription. If you want the best mix of features without going all the way to the top, Touring is the most obvious value step up.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque and uses a six-speed automatic. Grand Touring Reserve and Signature get the turbocharged version, which makes 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel, and it comes only with AWD.
- Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also included, while adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.
- Infotainment: Sport uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, HD Radio, text messaging support, integrated internet radio apps, and E911 emergency notification. Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Grand Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a Bose premium audio system. Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and connected data services.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined, compared with 26 mpg combined for the naturally aspirated engine with AWD and 28 mpg combined with FWD. The testing loop returned 22.1 mpg.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, six-speed automatic, and the full i-Activsense safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you give up the easier smartphone integration and the richer cabin tech found higher up.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without pushing you into the pricier luxury-leaning trims. If you want the CX-5’s premium feel but still care about value, this is the trim to target first.
- Grand Touring: This trim is the right move if you want a more polished cabin and stronger tech, thanks to the 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, Bose audio, and standard adaptive headlights. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without jumping to the turbo models.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is the first turbocharged trim, so it’s the choice if you want more power and standard AWD. It fits you best if performance matters more than fuel economy.
- Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with navigation, a surround-view camera system, premium materials, and the turbo engine. It’s the one to buy if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, which makes even the lower trims appealing from a protection standpoint.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,148 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,200.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $20,309 sits slightly below last year's $20,739.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly, which can help you if you are shopping used now. For a future seller, it means you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim rather than assuming the market will reward age alone.
The model’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment. Higher-trim versions with the turbo engine and richer features may also hold appeal better than bare-bones listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also part of the package.
One trim-level note matters here: adaptive headlights are not standard on every version, but they come standard with Grand Touring trim. Overall, the CX-5’s safety package is a major strength across the lineup.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model year keeps the premium interior feel, strong safety, and turbocharged upper trims while still offering a lower average price than the next year.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,093, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,309 average.
- It adds improved handling, smartphone connectivity, and a more powerful top-trim engine.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,306, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,309 average.
- It adds enhanced tech and a new Carbon Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale feel, the 2020 is the sweet spot. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better value play. If you want the newer model-year updates and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is worth a look.
