How much does the 2020 Mazda CX-5 cost?

Prices have softened 2.15% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,460 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for you to compare prices and trims.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the ample power on the highway. They also appreciate the luxurious feel and the safety features, which line up well with the CX-5’s upscale positioning.

The main trade-offs are its outdated technology, plus some owner complaints about limited cargo space and rear legroom. That matters most if you want a compact SUV that prioritizes family utility over polish and driving feel.

With its premium interior materials, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character, the CX-5 fits you best if you want a mainstream compact crossover that feels a step above the norm. Good and great deals account for 36.3% of listings, so there’s a meaningful share of attractive offers in the market.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe the CX-5 as comfortable, smooth, quiet, and safe, and those themes usually point to a vehicle people feel good about keeping for the long haul. The feedback also suggests you can count on it for everyday use without giving up refinement.

The expert evaluation reinforces that dependability story by emphasizing Mazda’s premium build quality, strong engineering, and overall value. The model’s standard equipment and thoughtful updates also support the sense that it is built to age well.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the technology and packaging still suit your needs over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

At 71.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because accident history is common enough to matter here, condition should carry extra weight in your decision.

Pay close attention to how the cabin, infotainment, and driver-assistance features work in real use, since the CX-5’s strengths are tied closely to refinement and equipment. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on the one that best balances condition, trim content, and mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Sport trim has a 7-inch touchscreen and basic Mazda Connect features, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring brings an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services. The base trim is the most stripped-down, so it is the one most likely to feel short on convenience features.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and available AWD. Grand Touring Reserve and Signature get the turbocharged version, which makes 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel, and comes only with AWD. The turbo setup is stronger, but it is less efficient.
• Safety package: The i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are included, while adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.
• Infotainment: Sport trim uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while Grand Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen. Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Signature adds navigation plus a surround-view camera system. The system can be frustrating to use, so you should test it carefully before buying.
• Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine with AWD is rated at 26 mpg combined, while the FWD version is rated at 28 mpg combined. The turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, six-speed automatic, and basic Mazda Connect setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is the least equipped trim.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without pushing you into the pricier upper trims. If you want the most useful everyday tech for the money, this is the one to target.
• Grand Touring: This trim adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and the 10-speaker Bose audio system. It also gets adaptive headlights, so it is a smart step up if you want more comfort and convenience.
• Grand Touring Reserve: This is the first trim with the turbocharged engine, so it is the right choice if you want stronger acceleration and more premium performance. It suits you best if power matters more than fuel economy.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with navigation, a surround-view camera system, and upscale cabin materials such as Nappa leather and real wood. Choose it if you want the most premium CX-5 experience.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, and adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 36.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,460 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.15% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 71.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,186, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $20,010 sits slightly below last year's $20,449.

That decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term resale gains if you plan to sell soon. Even so, the CX-5’s premium feel and strong reputation should help it remain appealing to future shoppers.

Because the price range has stayed fairly tight, a well-kept example should still hold reasonable value if you maintain it carefully and keep the mileage in check. Trim choice matters too, since better-equipped versions may be easier to market later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also included.

Adaptive headlights are the main safety-related upgrade, and they come standard on Grand Touring trim. That makes the mid-level trim especially appealing if you want the strongest lighting setup without moving all the way to the top of the range.

Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 36.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 71.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines premium design with strong safety and a fun-to-drive character.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $18,818, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,010 average.
• It adds smartphone connectivity and stronger turbo options.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,875, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,010 average.
• It brings updated tech and a new Carbon Edition.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale feel, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer-year update and are willing to pay more.
