Why it stands out
The 2020 Lincoln Aviator marks Lincoln’s return to a more cohesive luxury identity, with a stylish design and a clear emphasis on comfort. It is described as an all-new midsize, 3-row luxury SUV, and it is based on the contemporary Explorer platform while still being positioned as a luxury vehicle in its own right. That combination gives it a distinctive place in Lincoln’s lineup: familiar underlying hardware, but a more upscale mission and presentation.
What makes the 2020 Lincoln Aviator appealing is its broad luxury focus. The available test-drive notes point to multiple powertrain options, and owners commonly praise its powerful performance, smooth ride, advanced features, and comfortable seating. The cabin is also seen as spacious overall, which helps support its role as a family-oriented luxury SUV.
There are still tradeoffs. The test-drive data calls out poor ergonomic design and a cramped third row, so the Aviator is not without practical compromises. Even so, its blend of style, comfort, and luxury ambition makes it stand out as Lincoln’s effort to re-establish itself in the crowded three-row premium SUV segment.

Great features. This is the highest level trim. Doing some research the reliability for 2020 Aviators is low. It appears that was the first year the car was sold. Decided to pursue a 2021 model.

We were delighted with the purchase of the Lincoln Aviator. We enjoy the large sunroof, seating for seven (heated and cooled seats in second row), and the adaptive cruise control. The vehicle helps steer itself and adjusts speeds not only when coming up on other vehicles, but changes the speed when speed limits change. Very comfortable ride and is very responsive with the twin turbo engine. It is a well designed vehicle!

The owner feedback points to a luxurious feel, comfortable seating, and a smooth, confidence-inspiring driving experience that tends to support day-to-day dependability. The expert notes also emphasize hushed, confident acceleration and a refined powertrain setup, which reinforces the sense that the Aviator is built to feel composed over time.
Lincoln also includes a broad driver-assistance suite, which can help reduce stress in regular use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the vehicle has been maintained well and that any transmission or comfort-related complaints are not showing up in your specific example.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Lincoln Aviator?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a proper inspection. Prioritize condition on the cabin, electronics, and seating surfaces, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on luxury feel and comfort. It also makes sense to pay close attention to how the vehicle drives, especially if you want to avoid examples with the shifting complaints some owners mention.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Standard trim comes well-equipped with three-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats, Sync 3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, four USB ports, and satellite radio. The Reserve adds second-row captain's chairs, 12-way power front seats, upgraded leather, a hands-free power liftgate, Revel premium sound, quad-zone climate control, a surround-view camera system, and navigation. The Grand Touring layers in the plug-in hybrid drivetrain and many of the higher-end convenience features, while the Black Label trims make the upgraded seats and stereo standard and add unique upholstery choices.
- Powertrain: The standard setup is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic and available in RWD or AWD. The Grand Touring combines that engine with a 100-hp electric motor, battery pack, and charging port for 494 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque in AWD form. The hybrid setup is the most powerful and delivers hushed, confident acceleration.
- Safety package: Lincoln Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is also included, and the head-up display is part of the safety and convenience picture. Some additional driver-assistance features are optional on the Reserve.
- Infotainment: The standard system is Sync 3 with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless-style convenience through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support via USB, and a conventional landscape layout. The vehicle also offers a fully digital instrument panel, and higher trims can add a head-up display and premium audio.
- Fuel efficiency: The conventionally powered Aviator with RWD returns 18 mpg city, 26 highway, and 21 combined. With AWD, it drops to 17 city, 24 highway, and 20 combined. The plug-in hybrid is rated at 23 mpg combined, with a 21-mile electric-only range and 56 miles-per-gallon equivalent combined.
Which 2020 Lincoln Aviator trim should I buy?
The 2020 Lincoln Aviator is offered in 5 trim levels: Standard, Reserve, Grand Touring, Black Label, and Black Label Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Standard: This is the best-value trim because it already gives you a strong luxury baseline with leather upholstery, heated front seats, parking sensors, Sync 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. If you want the core Aviator experience without pushing the price too far, this is the one to start with.
- Reserve: This trim adds meaningful comfort and convenience upgrades, including second-row captain's chairs, upgraded leather, a hands-free power liftgate, quad-zone climate control, a surround-view camera system, and navigation. It suits you if you want a more polished family-hauler setup and are willing to pay for it.
- Grand Touring: This is the powertrain and feature-rich choice, pairing the plug-in hybrid setup with many of the higher-end amenities. It makes sense if you want the strongest performance and a more upscale feel, but it is not the value pick.
- Black Label: This is the luxury showcase trim, with nearly every feature you can get as standard equipment plus unique upholstery choices. It is for you if you want the most exclusive Aviator experience and are comfortable paying top dollar.
- Black Label Grand Touring: This combines the Black Label luxury treatment with the plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It is the most complete and most expensive version, aimed at buyers who want everything.
Lincoln Co-Pilot360 brings forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Lincoln Aviator?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 856 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,408.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Lincoln Aviator's resale value?
The current average of $28,402 sits slightly below last year's $32,207.
That price movement suggests the Aviator has become more accessible to used buyers, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the vehicle is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. The softer market also means depreciation has already done some of the work for you if you are buying now.
If you plan to sell later, condition and trim choice will matter a lot. Higher-spec examples may still attract interest, but the broader market is clearly pricing this model more conservatively than it did a year ago.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.61/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Lincoln Aviator safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Lincoln Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. The Aviator also includes blind-spot monitoring, plus a head-up display that helps keep key information in your line of sight.
Standard safety equipment also includes a full array of front and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The main caveat is that some additional driver-assistance features are optional on higher trims rather than standard across the board.
Should I buy a 2020 Lincoln Aviator or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.61/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 introduces Lincoln’s new cohesive luxury direction with an all-new three-row midsize SUV and a broad luxury focus.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $31,348, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $28,402 average.
- It adds a more premium-feeling cabin with modern technology and creature comforts.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model-year example, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path for buyers who want a slightly more upscale feel and do not mind paying extra.
