CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 739 currently listed for sale and an average price of $37,759, 32.3% of 2020 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Lexus GX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
67.8% of 2020 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Lexus GX stands out because it blends old-school toughness with luxury SUV comfort. Even after a facelift, it remains one of the most dated luxury SUVs on the market, but that age also helps explain why it is so capable. For buyers who value off-road ability and a comfortable cabin more than the latest trends, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
Lexus updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it more memorable, but the vehicle still carries an unmistakably traditional character. That makes it different from many modern luxury SUVs, which often prioritize broad on-road polish over specialization. The GX’s strengths are clear: it is capable off-road and comfortable, and owners also tend to praise its robust build, luxurious interior, ride quality, and reliability.
The tradeoff is that the 2020 Lexus GX is not the most modern choice. Its technology is outdated, its styling is uninspired, and some owners are disappointed by its poor gas mileage. Even so, for shoppers who want a luxury SUV with real off-road credibility, the GX remains distinctive.

It’s our second Lexus GX 460. Our first one has 170,000 miles and is still going strong. After driving several other SUV’s we decided to buy another GX 460. It’ has the perfect size, off-road capabilities, interior luxury, build-quality and reliability. Like most large SUV’s, the gas mileage is low, but that’s the only drawback.

Traded in my 4Runner for a Lexus GX. I thought both were the same vehicles. Boy was I wrong. The GX is a 180 degrees different from the 4Runner. The ride quality is awesome. Road noise is almost absent. Solid as a rock.

I would love to purchase the GX 460, however the gas mileage sucks, not environmentally friendly for our planet.

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback points to reliability, a robust build, and trouble-free ownership even at high mileage, while also emphasizing that many owners feel confident counting on it over the long term.
The expert review also frames the GX as a durable, old-school SUV with a truck-like foundation and genuine off-road capability, which supports the case for dependability. Its age means you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and wear items, because long-term ownership risk is more about age and complexity than basic toughness.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Lexus GX?
At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of hard use, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been cared for. If you want the best ownership experience, make sure the truck feels tight, the cabin equipment works properly, and the service history supports the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 460 is the best-value choice because it already includes 10-way power front seats, leather upholstery, push-button start, automatic climate control, a power sunroof, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The Premium adds rain-sensing windshield wipers, 3-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, LED fog lights, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and navigation, while the Luxury adds premium leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, self-leveling air suspension, and power-folding/reclining third-row seats.
- Powertrain: The GX 460 uses a 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic and standard 4WD. It is built for real-world strength and off-road control rather than modern efficiency.
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is also standard, while the surround-view camera is available.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen, and the system is simpler than many modern setups. It does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The GX returns 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Lexus GX is offered in 3 trim levels: 460, 460 Premium, and 460 Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- 460: This is the best-value trim because it already gives you the core GX experience without pushing the price too far. You get the standard luxury basics, the 8-inch touchscreen, and the full off-road-capable character that makes the GX appealing in the first place.
- 460 Premium: This is the trim to consider if you want the most balanced mix of comfort and equipment. It adds useful upgrades like heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, navigation, parking sensors, and 3-zone climate control.
- 460 Luxury: Choose this if you want the most upscale version and are willing to pay for it. It adds premium leather, a heated steering wheel, self-leveling air suspension, and power-folding/reclining third-row seats.
Lexus Safety System+ is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Lexus GX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 790 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $37,570, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $37,693 sits slightly below last year's $39,807.
That price movement suggests the GX has softened, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term gains if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the model’s strong owner satisfaction and reputation for reliability should help support demand over time. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, you should have a better chance of preserving value than you would with a less desirable luxury SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Lexus GX safe?
The 2020 Lexus GX comes standard with the Lexus Safety System+, which includes forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. It also comes standard with blind-spot monitoring, and the available surround-view camera adds another layer of confidence when parking or maneuvering.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The review also notes strong visibility thanks to the high seating position and large windows and mirrors. One limitation is that the available surround-view camera is not standard, so you may want to prioritize a well-equipped example if parking visibility matters to you.
Should I buy a 2020 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the GX’s old-school off-road capability while adding fresh styling for the year.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $42,147, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $37,693 average.
- It adds a Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it delivers the GX formula at a lower average price and with softer market pricing. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly updated version, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2020 and shop condition carefully.
