Why it stands out
The 2020 Land Rover Defender stands out as a modern take on an off-road icon, pairing its legendary 4x4 reputation with more comfort and convenience than the old truck was known for. It is described as a luxury manufacturer’s extreme off-road vehicle, and the new Defender is presented as something different from the original while still keeping its core mission intact. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want serious trail ability without giving up everyday usability.
Its biggest strengths are straightforward: off-road capability and a spacious cabin. Those qualities make it sound practical as well as adventurous, and owner feedback reinforces that impression by praising its practicality, impressive off-road performance, smooth on-road behavior, power, styling, and sturdy build. At the same time, the 2020 Land Rover Defender is not positioned as a bargain, with poor value for money noted as a drawback and interior materials described as feeling cheap.

The Defender is a great car, drives better than I thought , was worried it would drive more like a truck, but it’s very smooth on the road and has all the features to be a great off road vehicle as well.

Is the 2020 Land Rover Defender a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 5/5, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its practicality, impressive off-road capability, smooth on-road performance, power, styling, and sturdy build. That lines up well with the Defender’s use case as a serious off-road SUV that still needs to work as an everyday vehicle.
The trade-offs are clear: the cabin materials feel cheap, and value for money is a weak point. In other words, you’re buying capability and character more than luxury polish.
With its spacious cabin and off-road focus, it makes the most sense if you want a rugged SUV that can handle daily driving without losing its trail-first identity. Good and great deals account for 30.4% of listings, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Land Rover Defender reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels practical, impressive off-road, smooth on pavement, powerful, sturdy, and generally confidence-inspiring. The expert performance notes also suggest a durable, purpose-built character, with strong low-speed control, a mild-hybrid system that helps with responsiveness, and off-road hardware designed for demanding use.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about how hard the vehicle was used, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Land Rover Defender?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a rugged SUV like this may have seen trail use, towing, or other hard miles. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on underbody condition, suspension wear, and signs of off-road damage. You’ll also want to pay close attention to cabin condition, since the interior materials are described as feeling cheap.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as industrial and basic, with cloth standard, an optional center jump seat, and leather or water-resistant synthetic materials on higher versions. The base model also comes with manual seats and a lousy stereo, so you should expect meaningful feature gaps at the entry level.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 296 hp and 295 lb-ft, while other 110 models use a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six with 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque and mild-hybrid assistance.
- Safety package: Forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitor, and 360-degree cameras come standard. Rear cross-traffic alerts and alerts upon exiting the vehicle are optional.
- Infotainment: Pivi Pro uses a 10-inch touchscreen, includes navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, over-the-air updates, 4G WiFi, and a wireless charger. A 12-inch digital instrument panel is available, and the system also supports front cameras and off-road views.
- Fuel efficiency: No mpg figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2020 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?
The 2020 Land Rover Defender is offered in 5 trim levels: 110, 110 S, 110 SE, HSE, and X.
Here's the short version:
- 110: This is the entry point, and it gets the standard four-cylinder engine. It also comes with steel wheels, manual seats, a lousy stereo, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED headlights, proximity entry, 360-degree cameras, air suspension, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, and emergency braking. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the most basic cabin.
- 110 S: This trim keeps the four-cylinder engine and adds a bit more equipment than the base model. It is the better value if you want the Defender experience without jumping straight to the pricier six-cylinder versions.
- 110 SE: This is where the six-cylinder hybrid starts, along with more comfort and convenience equipment. It also brings in niceties like a heated steering wheel, leather, a 14-speaker Meridian stereo, and accessories such as an integrated air compressor, making it the best-value pick for many shoppers.
- HSE: This trim builds on the SE with more upscale equipment and was the tester’s trim. It suits you if you want a more fully equipped Defender and are willing to pay for it.
- X: This is the most expensive version mentioned, with the most loaded specification and two-tone treatment. It is the right choice if you want the most premium Defender setup and are less concerned about price.
Safety equipment is strong across the lineup, but rear cross-traffic alerts and exit warnings remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Land Rover Defender?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 431 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $37,644.94, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Land Rover Defender's resale value?
The current average of $37,626 sits slightly below last year's $44,298.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale if you overpay today. If you buy near the low end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting depreciation exposure later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Land Rover Defender safe?
It has not been rated by any U.S. crash testing agency or organization.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitor, and 360-degree cameras come standard. Rear cross-traffic alerts and alerts upon exiting the vehicle, such as passing cars or cyclists, are optional.
One caveat is that it does not come with knee airbags or rear side airbags, so you should weigh that against its standard driver-assistance coverage.
Should I buy a 2020 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It delivers serious off-road ability with a spacious cabin and strong everyday usability.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $41,160, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $37,626 average.
- It adds a more modern, upscale personality and comes in 90 and 110 body styles.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year’s broader body-style lineup and updated positioning, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritize that newer-market feel.
